My in-depth analysis of 12x01 on my second watch through (when I am able to pause and rewind). Forgive mistakes/errors, I was scribbling things down. This is just my theories/opinions I am sharing. Pictures below the cut.
I have never been more stressed or anxious watching a singular episode of PD.
12x01 Spoilers
WHY THE FUCK DID NOBODY TELL ME ALVIN WAS GONNA SHOW UP IN THE FINALE?????
My reaction exactly.
when are they going to have ASA chapman and voight get together??? he needs some happiness
Hank does deserve to be happy - but I don’t think ASA Chapman would be a good fit. He deserves to find someone who won’t go over his head at the drop of a dime. She is not ride or die - she will absolutely destroy him first chance she gets if given the choice.
Hank needs to find someone - perhaps even a civilian - who he can develop a relationship with OUTSIDE OF WORK. His job is his life, I know, but it has been for too long. Six years after Camille died plus another, what, 9-10 years after that? So it’s been 16 years since she died, give or take, and his job is all he has left. Literally.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again - Hank Voight has lost everything and everyone he cares about. A stillborn daughter, his father was killed in the line of duty, his mother is never mentioned so is absent at best or dead at worst, his wife died of cancer and had a crooked doctor too, Justin was murdered, Erin has left him and has not been seen again, Olive then promptly took his grandson Daniel so he can’t see them on a regular basis or at all, Alvin was murdered, Antonio left and hasn’t been heard from again, Jay left and hasn’t been heard from again, Jin was murdered, Jules was murdered, (curse of the “J” names, I guess), Anna Avalos died, Lexi (I think that was her name) the CI died, and if we really take the father/daughter angle of their relationship then he just lost Hailey too!
The only people Hank has left from the OGs are Trudy, Kevin, Kim, and Adam. Of course, none of these would be a love interest, for multiple reasons, but I’d really like to see Hank get a love interest from outside the police force. Since he doesn’t do a lot of dirty stuff anymore and has mellowed out, I’d like to see him come home to a woman who will take care of him and love him for who he is. He has made many past mistakes, but haven’t we all? Nobody deserves it more than Hank Voight. And ASA Chapman just isn’t going to be it for him. She will betray him if it means saving her own job, and I know that’s true, 100%. He needs someone outside of the police force at best (or a sergeant from another district at worst). Either way, he can’t date anyone he directly works with. He just can’t. If he and Chapman get together and settle down long-term, I just… I can’t see it. The whole thing will be ruined if that’s the case. End of story. 🤷♀️
If season 12 ends up being the last season, I’d like to see Hank meet someone, and slowly transition the role of Sergeant to someone like Adam, who’s been set up since literally season 1 to take intelligence. If not, then Trudy (but she’s not a good fit for it, simply because she wouldn’t like it as much as Patrol). Adam should be the one to take intelligence if Hank retires, and that is a hill I am willing to absolutely die on.
The Chicago Pdd finale wasn't terrible.
It was a send-off for Hailey more than anything else. Which...if you think about it...it's still very much in character for the show, but we've seen better send offs, lol.
I liked that Voight continued to show how much his team means to him. The serial killer wanted Hailey, Voight was determined to protect her.
Voight being ready to die but then AL SHOWING UP AND TELLING HIM ITS NOT HIS TIME YET HAD ME TEARING UP 😭
I like that Hailey chose herself in the end. I like that she knew she wanted to leave Chicago, but she still had a lot to learn about herself & what she really wanted. Voight reassuring her that she deserves good things & that while she's used to the bad, she has good still waiting for her in Chicago...i.e., Voight & the rest of the team, that was a sweet touch.
I also LOVED how the writers had her say that it wasn't Voight that "ruined her," & she realized that her upbringing played a major part in her adulthood. It was great hearing her say that she didn't want to continue to let her past dictate her future.
On that note...I TOLD Y'ALL THEY MADE HAILEY AN ERIN LINDSAY 2.0!
Everything that Hailey got was all a rewrite of Erin. The traumatic upbringing, the team being her family, Hank being her father figure, leaving Chicago for a new opportunity, MARRYING (and divorcing) Jay Halstead...
BUT I do like Hailey's outcome a little better than the way Erin's was. Erin HAD to leave to protect the only family she knew; her mom.
Hailey CHOSE to leave for something new for herself.
It's progress for her & that's great.
Looking forward to next season & I'm hoping we'll get more for our team, especially the main 3 with Kevin, Kim, and Adam
An excellent take on the finale.
How we are with this season finale of Chicago pd...
What the future hold??
I have *so* many feelings post-finale! 😅
My thoughts are below the cut so, for those of you who haven't seen it yet, there are spoilers below.
This is the best take I’ve seen on the finale thus far. I agree with every bit of this. Thank you for being sensible!! You took the words right out of my own brain and made them sound good!
Okay but are we all just gonna forget the fact that Noah existed?
Like I get the whole drama with Hailey leaving and Voight almost dying but like… let’s remember for a second how much Voight cared for Noah. Let’s not overlook the fact that Voight got justice for Noah in the end too, and the fact that it wasn’t addressed at all is extremely upsetting.
I get it’s daytime TV and all and there are Rules, but can we stop perpetuating the “bury your gays” trope and actually have an openly queer character that survives in this franchise?
I’m glad I was able to see the season finale, but let’s not forget where the season started.
Okay, but THIS.
People are upset that this season wasn’t enough about Hailey. But as someone who doesn’t STAN the character, this season was all about her - period. There were some one-off episodes another the other characters and the two about Voight and Noah. And then Noah died and that was the end of it. I was pissed he died too. It would’ve been so good for Hank.
But moreover, this ENTIRE SEASON was about Hailey. From the divorce to her new apartment and then her being set up to take intelligence, and then growing even closer to Voight, and then this entire episode being FAN SERVICE TO HER.
Where is the justice for Hank and Noah? Hank is literally the main character of the show and has been since the beginning. Why aren’t we seeing more of him and his story? And, by the way, if he had died in this episode, it would’ve been POETIC. As much as I don’t want Hank to die, I would’ve been okay with it this episode. He would’ve died doing the one thing he loves - being police. He was trying to catch the serial killer. He was captured. He refused to call Hailey or anyone in his unit because he is doing what he said from day one. He is protecting them. “Tell me the truth so I can lie for you.” That’s his whole character. It would’ve been poetic and if they give him a shit ending later on, I will be upset.
But back to OP, YES NOAH DESERVED BETTER, and so did Mouse btw…
Man, they brought back Olinsky? I can't watch man, it tore me apart when he died.
This is a good scene. Sad but good. I promise. 🩵🩵 I cried and I loved it. I need a GIF of Al holding Hank’s face as such.
I don’t care what anyone says, that was a great send-off for Hailey in such a short amount of time. It was hopeful and happy, believe it or not. Far BETTER characters have been sent off with way less (ANTONIO DAWSON), or sent off with a bad name (JAY HALSTEAD), or killed (ALVIN OLINSKY).
The whole episode was fan service for Hailey and if you’re a Hailey fan, I don’t see the issue with it. I am personally not a Hailey fan, so it was a little cheesy to me, but I am personally partial to Hank. I was actually a bit upset we didn’t get a separate Hank scene at the end. What’s the next steps for the actual show? For Hank? He IS the man character after all.
I think it was overall a good ending for Hailey’s character. Y’all crazy if you think otherwise. Please tell me I am not the only one.
