i’d like to preface that i also am not a fan of x readers, and i just do not even attempt it sorry ): character dynamics are my favorite and i feel like x readers don’t really hit that for me
texting for characters is more hit or miss for me because i feel like the characterization is just always slightly off. after gege said that toge was a troll, i think everyone latched onto that bit and just took it to the extreme. i’ve said before that i don’t see him as overtly a troll, more as he’s subtle with it. in fact, i see panda as more of an instigator than toge.
some examples of toge trolling include:
• being stopped by a civilian asking for directions, proceeding to try and direct them in his onigiri ingredients
• trying to cheer nobara up, calling her humbleness creepy, nobara observes that his high spirits caused him to get carried away
• communicating to children in only onigiri ingredients and ending up with then mimicking his language
• peeling fruit into bunny shapes for megumi with panda
• wearing maki’s skirt, to which she’s not even shown to care about, and not even making fun of it, he’s just wearing a skirt just because
• playing tag with panda and chasing him around the beach
compared to panda:
• asking yuuta his preferred chest size and immediately teasing maki with it
• proceeding to battle maki in the most dramatic way possible
• if the word favorite is in a sentence your answer has to be panda or he will literally hunt you down
• pretended not to understand human language because todo was being annoying, also said he would start screaming no
• races the first-years and has way too much fun throwing them in the air to which toge came in to catch them
• joined in with nobara in taunting momo, he really likes taunting people omg, and also falls to play dead
i might have missed a few but to me, panda is definitely the instigator of the group.
to me, i feel like we neglect the emotional intelligence it takes for a child to willfully and completely silence themselves, and still show an extreme amount of empathy for the people around them.
how this translates to texting, i actually don’t think toge is a huge texter. he’s shown in canon to have a preference for speaking, even if no one else can understand him. so it’s hard to translate that to texting. i actually think he and the other second years are so used to translating for him that the same habits translate to texting. it’s kind of like if you gave him the ability to speak, jumping right in and being a chatterbox doesn’t really feel likely. but if i had to guess some texting habits ?
- Toge assigns the nicknames in the group, changes them randomly without saying anything or mentioning anything, sometimes in the middle of his messages
- Types in all lower cases, does not have spell check on and probably has a lot of typos but he refuses to turn it on
- Sends multiple messages but also mutes the group chat so he won’t get notifications in the middle of gaming
- He doesn’t go to sleep without turning his notifications on though, just in case.
- Uses custom emojis + reaction images the most and very rarely kaomojis, he refuses to use the default phone ones
- More than likely learned a lot of texting tones from social media and youtube.
- He probably didn’t get a phone until he was enrolled in school, he also didn’t have anyone to text until he met the other second years.
- Toge probably started pretty subdued with shortish messages and nothing but text, still all lowercase and no punctuation lol but the longer he got to know them, the more relaxed he got
