Chapter 8: Scintilla
On the road to the airport in Tempsford, Betty made a list of clues learnt from Albert Waters about the murder:
- Belgian
- Agent
- Arrived in Autumn
- Needed a lock picked
- Rich?
- Jérémie afraid, had remorse. Wanted out?
She read it outloud to Jean-François. He didn’t respond right away. Whether he was lost in thoughts or focused on the road she didn’t know until he clicked his jaw, a sure sign he was pondering the matter at hand.
“He might not be an agent,” he said.
“How d’you mean?”
“What is it Albert said? Only that he went to France, correct?”
Betty crossed out ‘agent’ on her list and replaced it with ‘went to France.’
“Could be a pilot,” she mused.
“Yes. Or one of De Gaulle’s boys. Their HQ is only a street away from ours.”
“And I thought Belgium had its own S.O.E. section.”
F-section was created before the Belgian one, so it could be a Belgian man recruited early on. Or a Belgian trying to pass off as French. Or Albert had lied to them. Or Jérémie had lied to Albert to protect his lover.
“God, we’re not getting any closer, are we?”
“Don’t worry. We will get there,” he said, possibly more to reassure her than out of faith in their success.
