cookiepianos replied to your post: Yeah, I read in Daphne Ashbrook’s autobiography that he had a buzz cut from playing a soldier role previously and they thought he looked too intimidating, so they kind of had to go with a wig? XD
stardust-musings replied to your post: I vaguely remember there being an interview with him in which he said that he basically would have wanted Chris Eccleston’s look which is amusing me to no end for some reason. lol

Eight’s Dark Eyes outfit isn’t dissimilar to Eccleston’s — I wonder if Paul had some input regarding the design for that one…

The Saga of the Ninth Doctor’s  Watch

NowSo iOr How I Irresponsibly Stayed Up Until 2am Several Nights in a Row staring into the void and yet somehow know less than when I began.

This is Nine’s watch (from his regeneration scene.).

Here it is flipped so that it is right side up, and expanded.

It is a silver or platinum tank style watch with Roman numerals and a white face. Other distinctive features include:

  • Black lettering both above and below the watch hands
  • Either a fairly short minute hand or the minute hand has been removed
  • A relatively flat wide crown (the thing used to change the time, I googled)

What to the best of my squinting I do NOT believe it has is a box inside the numerals on the face like this:

I also don’t think it has a display for the date like this watch although admittedly I’m not 100% there isn’t one in either the three or six o’clock spot. I’m reasonably sure though.

If it did have the date display, then I would say it’s likely the rotary classic show above, as it shares a number of other unique elements, namely the width of the case at the top and the bottom and the way the sides of the case sit a little higher than the top and bottom making a line where the two meet. The crown doesn’t quite match, but I can chalk that up to blurry pictures.

But what I think is more likely, is that it’s a stage watch, I haven’t yet seen a shot that catches a glare off the watch crystal, and I think that’s deliberate. I don’t think there is crystal and I think there isn’t a minute hand because it’s set for continuity reasons.

But here’s where it gets interesting.

This is Christopher Eccleston’s watch:

It’s gold. See it in comparison with his wedding ring? It also does not have the lettering both below the watch hands, and the proportions of the casing is way off.

The Ninth Doctor’s watch is NOT Christopher Eccleston’s watch.

I’ve looked and looked at photos and video, and I think I might be able to see a faint shadow of the square inside the numerals that I mentioned above. If so, I believe this is a classic Cartier Tank watch.

I can’t quite catch the distinctive blue crown, but I also can’t really rule it out either, and the proportions of the face and casing are remarkably similar, so that’s my best guess.

Now of course there’s also the matter of this:

That’s CE in promotion for Thor wearing a round gold watch. So I don’t even fucking know ok. Can I just go to sleep now. Please?

So in conclusion, The Ninth Doctor’s watch is NOT Christopher Eccleston’s although for some inexplicable reason they decided to go with a watch that was remarkably similar. CE’s watch is likely a Cartier or something similar, possibly vintage although that’s tough to determine given just how many of those tank style watches have been churned out.

Also he sometimes wears other watches just to mess with me.

If anyone actually runs into CE please skip the “I loved you in” formalities and just examine his wrist. IDK pretend you’re shaking his hand or something. This whole thing is driving me crazy.

Now somebody buy me a drink!

*pops out from a potted plant* DID I SEE A POST ABOUT COSTUMES? 8D Yes. Hi. I’m your friendly neighborhood cosplayer and costume nerd - while ten is generally my forte, I once did newly-regenerated-ten-in-nine’s-clothes, so I’ve done some research for nine as well - and I think I might be able to add a bit to your post.

Unfortunately, the research I did was years and years ago, so while I still have my notes, the sources are gone, so I can’t be 100% certain if it’s all official or partially guesswork done by other cosplayers. (I did go and check my “The Inside Story” of s 1-2, but there were no mention of the watch in the costume section :/). According to my notes, the watch is a 40s tank style watch by Cartier, which, if true, means that nine and Chris Ecclestone is wearing the same brand of watch. No model was mentioned in my notes, but a Cartier watch seems pretty plausible to me - especially one from the 40s, seeing as nine’s leather jacket was a genuine 40s submarine captain jacket. Yes, really - Captain Jack did get that one right! XD

For anyone curious what I looked like as ten-in-nine’s-clothing:

I always love your cosplay. Puts a smile on my face.

So I’m pretty confident that the regeneration scene watch is NOT a Cartier although it’s an easy assumption to make. Louis Cartier invented this style of watch in 1917 and there have been numerous variations on the style throughout the years by Cartier and other watch manufacturers.

That said, as I noted above, there are a few elements of Nine’s watch that just don’t mesh with a Cartier. On the top higher resolution shot you can see that it does not have the blue sapphire on the crown that is a pretty ubiquitous trademark of the Cartiers.

Likewise, the face doesn’t have the “box” drawn inside the Roman numerals, which with very few exceptions is pretty much on all the Cartiers with the Roman face.

One of the biggest things is the writing below the watch hands, a Cartier will have lettering above the hands saying “Cartier” but I have yet to find one with anything below the dial. This is usually used to specify a designer or line within the brand as is done on this Rolex Cellini.

I haven’t found a single instance of this in the Cartiers, likely because since Louis Cartier was the designer of the original Must de Tank, they were disinclined to bring in a designer to do a variation.

Finally, a subtle bet for me telling detail is the width of the silver case at the top and bottom between the two lugs that hold the strap. It’s really quite wide there, where Cartier tended to be quite thin.

All of these things together, combined with the fact that it is distinctly NOT the watch that CE wears in his interviews, leads me to believe that the DW costume department just went out and got a cheaper replica of the tank style, possibly inspired by Chris’s watch. Which makes sense. The budget of season one was notoriously tight. They weren’t exactly going to go out and drop 4k on an authentic vintage watch that no one was really going to notice.

That said, I’ve seen some more pictures of CE’s own watch with the distinctive square on the face more apparent and so I’m more and more sure that it is a Cartier.

You’re absolutely correct. I’ve been mulling about this ever since I reblogged your post, because there was something that kept nagging at me - in retrospect, it’s that lack of blue sapphire you mentioned (but I somehow managed to miss when I read your post the first time. Sorry about that!). I have managed to find Cartier watches with lettering underneath the dial (usually “automatic” or “Paris”), and watches without that inside frame-box-thing (definitely the technical term!), but not both occurring at the same time. But, that’s a moot point anyway seeing as the Doctor’s watch lacks the sapphire. :P

Well, seeing as the jacket is a genuine vintage jacket, it wouldn’t surprise me if they bought a genuine vintage watch, but perhaps of a cheaper/low quality variety. Or they bought a new watch in vintage style.

This is going to nag me forever now. XD

And aww, thank you for saying such nice things about my cosplay! You’re making me blush!

@gcballet Found it!

Though we are still left to ponder the in-universe character reasons ourselves...

I have seen far too little of bare-armed Tentoo on my dash.

ok, but this is such great costuming

(I know, I never shut up about the costuming, i have unusual priorities)

because Tentoo is described as being kinda like Nine, before he met Rose—he’s new and harsh and forged in war, and he’s got the mouthiness of a Donna, and the anger of a weapon, and some spiky loneliness going on. Tentoo is sorta Ten, but sorta Nine. It’s tricky.

And the costumes convey this Nine-ness by putting Tentoo in the same kind and color of shirt that Nine was wearing when he first vworped into our lives—a maroon T-shirt. Now, that’s not a significant detail, really—but as a way of communicating the psychology of this character, what he’s feeling and where he sits in the story, having him pick out Nine’s shirt subtly clues the audience into how this Ten is different than the other. Because again, in-universe—TenToo picked this shirt out for himself. Lots of shirts and ties in  the wardrobe that Ten has worn before, but he picks out this old thing instead. What does that say about him?

We don't talk nearly enough about the 9th Doctor's square watch.

Sir, what function could that watch POSSIBLY serve? You are A TIME TRAVELLER WITH THE ABILITY TO SENSE TIME?????

In the most dripless (sorry) outfit of his entire regeneration cycle, man grabs a pointless accessory. He cannot help it.

If anyone tells me there's some comic book or minor scene where it's revealed to be an obscure gadget I s2g

I agree! Subtle COMFY drip! His design FASCINATES me bc it's so deliberately subtle and consciously a departure from Doctor aesthetics. Like, post-war, he has no real connection to who he is as the Doctor any more, trauma has a way of making you disconnect from stuff you enjoy, so his moment of rummaging in the TARDIS wardrobe can only have been depressing?? Confusing for him? Like, "I hurt people, I don't deserve fun things like nice scarves or vegetable boutonierres. I'm just a sad little veteran I should wear big boots and lots of black" and then they even retconned that jacket to be a transition piece the War Doctor wears to combine 8 and 9 iirc?

But even then! He still ends up in a really 2005 vivid purple jumper, and this WATCH! THIS POINTLESS LITTLE WATCH??? It fascinates me?? It's like his one little allowance for his own sense of whimsy it breaks my heart!
