Not only is it true, it gets worse. The Susan G Komen For The Cure Foundation has actually successfully sued “competing” charities, because (paraphrasing) their “message or branding was infringing.”

You read that correctly: they took money that people had donated to cure cancer, and hired attorneys with it, to sue ANOTHER group of people trying to find a cure for cancer, who, in turn, had to us their donated money to hire their own legal counsel to defend themselves.

Yeah signal boost because not enough people know about this and seriously FUCK SUSAN G. KOMEN THEY ARE THE ACTUAL WORST

Reblog every time I see it. Roughly once a month.

I'm not saying this just because I work for the American Cancer Society and I live in one of the biggest markets for Komen, but nothing makes me more angry. I work year round with committees of volunteers in five communities to build Relay events and I know what these events mean to survivors and caregivers and families.

Please please please don't let this turn you off to charity.

Support fundraising event events like the ACS's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5Ks if you are looking for breast cancer specific events or Relay For Life if you don't have a specific type.

With ACS, almost 80% of fundraising through all events goes back to patients via programs and services such as rides to treatment and places to stay during treatment and also helps fund the researchers that have discovered tests like the mammogram and the Pap smear so PLEASE. Do your research. There are amazing charities out there doing amazing things, but they are drowning in events such as this one.
