After several years of planning and execution, Neverender Issue One is available for pre-order from Kickstarter.
The year is 2̶͎͍̤̮͈͕̃̓͌̊̄͘X̶̢̻͔͎͍͈̽̏̃1̵̭̑̚9̸̧̙͇͕̣̅̆͌̂ͅ and due to breakthroughs in artificial accelerants, mankind has taken to the stars. At the edge of civilization, the dominant sport is a civilized sword duel to the death.
The rules are simple:
In the city of riots, Merrick, a disaffected terrestrial youth fights for his survival. If you enjoyed Dragon Slayer, Silence, or dig my art in general, you'll definitely enjoy this book. Neverender is 40+ pages of pure black and white action. The Kickstarter campaign will run for one month and ship shortly afterward. A mockup of the book as well as the rewards are below.
This is my last chance before the launch Monday (6PM, CST/Texas time) but here's the final cover for Neverender: Issue One. One of the central themes is mankind raging against the darkness of the infinite expanse of space, and I felt like the best way to do that was by representing mankind as this colorful unpredictable liquid in an otherwise solid black space. The logo is reminiscent of space training manuals, while still having it's own flare. Each issue title will be a short meaningful quote, with the first issue being "Neither Violence Nor Peace". I've spent the last month designing some really fun ancillary rewards for the Kickstarter, and I'll be posting about them, the process, and the story over time, so thanks in advance for checking out the project, backing, and or sharing. I haven't really posted any new print designs since February (the Universal Monsters set) because I've been hard at work on Neverender, as well as some awesome new pin designs with Pin Stash. But that changes today! Hidetaka Miyazaki's Sekiro was a blast. True, it was mercilessly hard, but to me it was a master class in level design. The game empowers you with a wide arsenal of moves, but challenges you with intelligent and difficult enemies, forcing you to get really good at the combat to proceed. I'm still not over my ninja art kick, and I love drawing feudal temples, so this was a fun challenge. Drawing women is incredibly tough, and 3/4 angles even more so, but I felt like I locked on to what I was aiming for and kept that momentum going from there. Back in the saddle with a Sekiro piece. I've felt like I've been stuck in molasses for the last few months, but I've made it through the summer con season and I'm hitting the ground running. The background is the real star here, and lemme tell ya' it took forever ;p Miyazaki and team killed it again, as I was constantly in awe of the level and boss design the entire time. Hi, I got one of your Ghibli posters (the princess mononoke one) for my birthday and I've been scrolling through your art and I love it!!! I wanted to ask, do you have any advice for getting ideas/ starting an original web comic? Ty for your time!!!
First, more than anything, set manageable goals and hit them. Don’t hesitate too much-come up with an idea you love, then storyboard or sketch out as much of it as you can. When that stops being fun, start drawing. When that stops being fun, start writing or story boarding again. Always keep moving forward! Listen to your audience, listen to your friends feedback for whatever it’s worth, but if you feel you have a clear vision for something, aim for that. Push yourself! You can do it!
@the.pinstash has this really cool vision for a distressed Gundam pin being overtaken by nature, similar to some existing key art we both loved. I love the design of the RX-78, so I got distressing and the results came out really cool. Here's some character designs I'm cooking up potentially for my next project. I have this Chinese grunge-punk aesthetic in mind, and I wanted to see if I could synthesize what was in my head into a coherent look. If you watched the livestream, it took me a bit to find my footing with Jing, but once I got him on lock the rest of the gang really fell into place. I kind of want to separate out Xie and do a further study with her character too.
