Do you think EVA 01 effectively utilized “girl power” when it went berserk and consumed the angel Zeruel in an extremely grotesque and violent manner?
yotsuba makes an important decision
One of my fav things in evangelion is when Shinji will go through some kind of horrific surrealist nightmare like personally disemboweling an angel n then it'll cut to him lying in bed listening to music through his little headphones like he just had a bad day at school. Love that for him.
shinji ikari is probably my favourite blatant transfem egg character that certain people get SO fucking mad when you say that. like I'm sorry that you (trans or cis) put so much of your ideas of manhood onto this character but actually masculinity is a prison for her and I've known like 3 girls like her.
same with how ppl treat Jessie pinkman where it's like the fact that ppl have put so much of their own masculinity projection onto him that any discussion of him being trans etc gets you murdered like it's some personal fucking attack on them.
possibly a controversial statement here but uh... a character being written to have been explicitly deemed male from birth both in and out of universe is in fact probably more indicative of being transfem than some other trans reading?
like there's certain systems of violent gender assignment and societal coercion at play here that make me suspect that the eggy robot boy might actually be more likely to come out as a trans girl than having secretly having transitioned into being a guy the whole time
Evangelion is the best anime ever and also absolute dogshit. Everybody should watch it. I don't recommend it to anyone.
Evangelion touches deep themes and imagery. The creators said that they mostly introduced them because "they looked cool". It has amazing animation and scenery. They ran out of budget so most of the last chapters are just a telephone with a voiceover. Asuka is a quite developed character with an interesting exploration of female teenagehood and trauma. She's also used constantly as fanservice. Shinji is a very harsh picture of depression and lack of self worth and how one deals with it. He's also a whiny little bitch. Rei has a fascinating character arc as she begins to feel and think for herself. The creator himself forgot she existed by the middle of the series. Misato is probably the adult with most empathy towards the kids and what they're living through. She's also intermitently portrayed as an inmoral slob. Kaworu is probably the most interesting of all "antagonists" and has a very tender blooming romance with Shinji. He only shows up for a single episode. The EVAs are iconic mecha with a carefully developed worldbuilding and infraestructure behind them. Nobody fucking knows how big they are.
Neon Genesis Evangelion, but it's not bad:
- Barbie
- Everything Everywhere All At Once
- Inside Out
- The Lion King
- The Boy + The Heron
- My Neighbor Totoro
- The Matrix

The second image is the “Tails Gets Trolled” meme, where he looks completely shocked and stunned. End ID.]
I have no particular stance on whether estrogen would have saved Shinji, but I'm looking at it from the family dynamic angle, and... well, Jesus Christ. On a good day, Shinji already looks like a teenage soft butch version of Yui Ikari – can you imagine how Gendo would react to his "son" slowly morphing into his dead wife?
Asuka remarks that "y'know, now that the hormones are starting to kick in, you look an awful lot like Rei" and from there, accidentally unravels the entire plot within minutes.
