i think kishimoto just really bit off more than he could chew lol. he kept introducing concepts he wasnt equipped to handle - like, people aren’t looking at dbz and asking why goku is a child soldier or whatever, because dbz encourages some suspension of disbelief. naruto discusses the concept of child soldiers and children used as tools from the first arc to the last arc, explicitly. it introduces the “will of fire” as a philosophy, and later reveals the figure we see touting said philosophy signed off on a genocide. of course, the characters who question the themes of the series are still positioned antagonistically, and resemble terrorists more than freedom fighters, their solutions are always too extreme to be functional because it’s the only way naruto can be remotely believable as a messiah. he’s only going to be as politically astute as kishi is, and kishi was so stressed out by the pain arc he was losing sleep. the words ‘reparations’ ‘peace summit’ ‘economic redistribution’ do not exist in his vocabulary. and the character he’s created doesnt even think he has the solution, he actually tells minato he’s too stupid to come up with something and shouldn’t be expected to when the hokages couldnt. and he’s right, but…shounen.
its not often that I speed-read almost 100k words just because I Cannot Stop. no seriously, this fic had me in a chokehold of puppies, grumpy but genuinely smart mcs and well-executed time-jumps and ahh. so much love to the author!

The kyubi was really sort of a curse passed down between the members of the Uzumaki clan that condemned them to an existence of rejection and duty, but really why would Kishimoto explore how it parallels Neji's situation with the second branch seal, haha?
It's not like Naruto and Neji were both slaves to a clan tradition or that the only method that would get rid of the mark / curse would kill them, right?
It's not like Konoha was hiding the circumstances behind their heritage and the death of their dads, not like people would hate on them, not like they were treated as necessary sacrifices for a greater cause, not like their parents were "heroes"and yet they were abominations.
No way Naruto and Neji could bond over the fact that their parents loved them, but it doesn't erase the hurt of being left alone and hated, or the dads that loved them being the ones who passed down that horrendous curse to them. Their rage is taken as monstrous but no one would explain reality to them, no one would take the time to engage with their hurt and the ones who did (Iruka and Gai) could only go so far.

kishimoto set out a fictional world where he could have made a statement on unfounded bigotry, systematic oppression and child abuse….and then turned it into a story about a boy who confuses the hatred he faced as the need for acknowledgement and “resolved” everything by making him hokage with a trophy wife. that’s why i’m like *no response* when naruto makes his 129th speech about the friends he made along the way because everything he says is from a personal level that has no impact on the bigger picture. his constant sacrifices and personal victory of becoming hokage changes absolutely nothing and i hate the typical shounen manga ~friendship is end all be all~ propaganda. i like naruto as a concept but i can’t bring myself to fully enjoy his arc because so much of a typical straight man’s idea of success is projected onto him.

thinks about how naruto is like so repressed he cannot even acknowledge that anything he went through is bad enough because he knows like even thinking that like even actively repressing would break the dam in him and he knows he would be like sasuke if he ever really sat with his own emotions and how hes been mistreated like hes just gotta smile and that sasuke is kind of the only one who probably gets just how deep that hurt is whatever what im trying to say is the waterfall of truth should have happened but sasuke walked out of it but like sasuke is the form narutos other half takes you know and he grapples both with his own feelings about sasuke and his actions as well as his own self hate and he can hear that the village mistreated him from sasukes mouth because theres still some separation you know and he can say sasuke doesnt deserve things that he cannot like really sit down and say were bad for him you know and hugging sasuke to bring things back and that to make him disappear he has to actually like realize that these fears are from a very real place and like it would probably begin a journey towards him actually drifting closer to sasuke and further from konoha but like we cannot have that i guess
