I rarely reblog long posts like this, but this particular collaborative comic thing has been around for /years/, like at least three or four, and it has an update every time I see it. It is a truly pure relic from a simpler time.

Nanda Parbat is a fictional city in the DC Comics universe. Is a hidden city nestled high in the mountains of Tibet; it is said to be a place of healing and enlightenment watched over bythe goddess-like figure Rama Kushna and her monks. As in Shangri-La, time moves differently in Nanda Parbat. Its visitors are often able to retain their youth many decades after their arrival, and yet they can leave Nanda Parbat to find that less time has passed in the outside world.

MALCOLM MERLYN revealed that, during his two-year disappearance following his wife’s murder, he met a man in Nanda Parbat that helped him find a purpose for his life.

I have absolutely no idea how I’m going to explain this.

i hate when a villainous character gets popular enough to become a hero and writers try and retcon their histories so they never fucked up in the first place. "harley quinn was actually a good psychiatrist who cared about her patients!" "eddie brock was actually correct in his exposure of a serial killer and it wasn't negligent journalism!" i think it's way more compelling if they did in fact actively choose to do awful things and then actively chose to try and become better people afterwards.

I didn't know Harley was originally a bad psychiatrist

Paul Dini's "Mad Love" comic strongly implied that Harley was not a gifted student.

She got into the University on a gymanstics scholarship but what she wanted....

She then applied to Arkham as her internship...

And admits that her goal is not exactly selfless

But of course Harley doesn't listen to Dr Leland because she's just seen the Joker and is instantly fixated.

(Alfred also mentions that he has heard that she originally planned to be a high profile pop spcyhologist and release a line of self-help books and the like)

Her intro to the mainstream DCU in "Batman: Harley Quinn" (also by Dini) set during No Man's Land, doesn't make mention of how she got her qualifications, but makes it clear she had an ultterior motive to her profession

Now, to be clear, other iterations in other continurites have made her an actually gifted psychiatrist, even if her uses of that skillset have not always been admirable.

But that does not appear to have been her creators original intent.

To be honest, the version where Harley Quinn was a talented psychologist/psychiatrist who fell into an idée fixe and then a folie à deux with a patient is much more interesting than the tired and sexist "she slept her way to the top" trope. After all, a good psychologist/psychiatrist needs to have ethics and boundaries and work on their own mental health issues as well as academic/clinical skills - and you can tell some really interesting stories about what happens when someone only has the latter.

Which is why I find versions of Quinn's origin story like Sejic's Harleen more compelling - and better suited to telling a wider range of Harley Quinn stories.

To use a Marvel analogy, Karla Sofen aka Moonstone was a very good psychiatrist - she just also happened to be a complete sociopath who liked to make her patients worse on purpose for research purposes and financial gain. The fact that she's a good psychiatrist makes it possible to tell a wider range of Moonstone stories than if she was just bad at her job.
