John Prine, Everly Brothers Get Statues in Central City, Kentucky
- “John would be so overwhelmed by this … he loved Muhlenberg County,” Oh Boy Records VP says
John Prine is back in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky - Central City, specifically.
Immortalized in Prine’s song “Paradise,” the community on June 14 unveiled statues of Prine and the Everly Brothers at the newly dedicated Festival Square, where the musicians headlined the Everly Brothers Homecoming/Central City Music Festival between 1988 and 2002 to help the area financially after the coal-mining industry dried up.
“John would be so overwhelmed by this,” Oh Boy Records Vice President Eileen Tilson told 14 News. “I don’t think it’s any secret that John was a very sentimental person, and he loved Muhlenberg County.”
The square was dedicated with a benefit concert featuring the John Price Band, Kelsey Waldon and others playing a set of Prine and Everly tunes.
“Thank you to everyone who has come out to celebrate this occasion with us,” Everly Brothers Foundation Chairman Mike Mercer told the Messenger-Inquirer. “It’s been a long time coming and we’re thrilled to finally see the ending.”
