The excellent duo band Deap Vally is calling it a career and embarking on a farewell tour. I saw them once, back in 2016 on the bill with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Death From Above at House Of Blues in Chicago. They were excellent and fun to meet at their merch table. They have made some enjoyable music so I am kicking off the weekend with Smile More from their fine album Femejism.

Check out their tour dates here. https://deapvally.com/

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – The Rave/Eagles Club – Milwaukee May 15, 2017

My third Rock show in 7 Days (including The Breeders on May 9 at The Rave and The Brian Jonestown Massacre at The Vic on May 11). It was just an awesome show! I was a little concerned that I might have a bit of regret going to this show because it is the third time I’ve seen BRMC in the last 19 months and my third Rock show in 7 days. I thought that during the concert I might end up wishing I was comfortably ensconced in my hotel room reading a book instead of being at the show. Thankfully, I was completely wrong. I absolutely loved this show! I was actually on the fence about going to this show, but when I went to see The Breeders last week, I was handed a free ticket to this show, so it was a no brainer. Man, this band rocks! They played for the better part of 3 hours and they played hard. They have definitely become one of my fave live bands and I am now convinced that I need to see them whenever I can. Part of my attraction to this show was that the opening band was Pete International Airport. The “Pete” of PIA is Pete Holmstrom from one on my favorite bands, The Dandy Warhols. They played a wonderful psychedelic set. Robert Levon Been of BRMC sang lead vocals for one song and BRMC drummer Leah Shapiro sat in on their closing song. BRMC made a guest appearance on PIA’s second album, Safer With The Wolves. Between sets, I stopped by the merchandise table and met Pete Holmstrom.  I bought a copy of PIA’s latest CD. Pete has always been so introverted on stage and he was no different tonight. He was low key durng the PIA set, but played great guitar. I was wearing a Dandy Warhols t-shirt and I told him that I have seen him six times before with his “other band.” He just smiled and nodded, very unassumingly and rather shyly. I love The Rave and can’t say enough about the two shows I have attended at The Rave in the last two weeks. Meanwhile, my birthday boy brother John and my brother-in-law Brian were 2000 miles away enjoying U2 at the LA Forum. We exchanged photos and videos from our respective shows.

I was tagged by @iariotact to pick a song for each letter in my url, then tag at least five other people. This could have been a case of really overthinking the task, so I tried to make it as spontaneous as possible and mostly go with the first songs that came into my head for each letter:

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at The Vic Theatre, Chicago (Feb 10, 2018)

This was my second time seeing BRMC. Last time was at House Of Blues in Chicago in October of 2016. I had not been to The Vic Theatre in awhile, so it was nice to be back. Also, when I saw BRMC at HOB, they were actually a co-headliner with Death From Above, so their set was a bit on the short side. This time, they were the headliner and played a great set that ran about 2 hours and 20 minutes. I love this band and it’s certainly not for a diverse musical style. They kind of stick to the same formula on every album, but it works for me. I enjoy every one of their albums. Their music is described as Alternative, Garage Rock, and Shoegazing. For me, the Shoegazing is what it’s all about. Get a good buzz going and then just get lost in the drone of the guitars and drums. The Vic is a small theater and since I had seen them before, I was not bent on getting close to the stage. I was there for the music alone, and I spent most of the show in the back of the theater, shoe gazing and getting refills at the nearby bar. For maybe the last 30 minutes of the show, I decided to move up a bit, and that allowed me to get a few decent pictures. Robert, Peter and Leah all looked so cool, dressed in black and playing with a stoic confidence that remained in tact even when they amped up the intensity. The Garage/Psych Rock band Night Beats opened the show. They were excellent and their brand of music was a perfect choice to set the stage for BRMC. (Special thanks to my son Dylan, who was there with his friends, for buying me a “birthday beer.”)

I usually rely on Setlist.fm for posting a set list, but the set list from the Chicago show has not shown up. In lieu of that, I have posted the set list from the following night at another of my favorite venues, First Avenue in Minneapolis. From what I can tell, it is very similar to the Chicago show.

 1.     Spook

2.     Little Thing Gone Wild

3.     King of Bones

4.     Beat the Devil's Tattoo

5.     Ain't No Easy Way

6.     Stop

7.     Question of Faith

8.     Circus Bazooko

9.     Berlin

10. Conscience Killer

11. Nothing Compares 2 U(Prince cover) (Acoustic) – note: based on the set lists I have seen, they are doing one cover song a night. In the case of the Chicago show, the cover was Jailhouse Rock, performed as a solo by Robert.

12. White Palms

13. Echo

14. Carried From the Start

15. Shuffle Your Feet

16. Love Burns

17. All Rise

18. Awake

19. Six Barrel Shotgun

20. Spread Your Love

Encore:

21. Ninth Configuration

22. Whatever Happened to My Rock 'n' Roll (Punk Song)

I was sitting at the bar at Harry Caray’s in Chicago prior to the BRMC show at House of Blues. I had a nice conversation with a guy sitting next to me. He was from Belgium and was spending a few days touring Chicago following his running of the Chicago Marathon. We were discussing the ages of the American presidential candidates when this exchange happened.

Belgium guy: Theodore Roosevelt was your youngest president, correct?

Me: Yes. You know your history!

Belgium guy: No, I know your history.

Touche Belgium guy.
