Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at The Vic Theatre, Chicago (Feb 10, 2018)
This was my second time seeing BRMC. Last time was at House Of Blues in Chicago in October of 2016. I had not been to The Vic Theatre in awhile, so it was nice to be back. Also, when I saw BRMC at HOB, they were actually a co-headliner with Death From Above, so their set was a bit on the short side. This time, they were the headliner and played a great set that ran about 2 hours and 20 minutes. I love this band and it’s certainly not for a diverse musical style. They kind of stick to the same formula on every album, but it works for me. I enjoy every one of their albums. Their music is described as Alternative, Garage Rock, and Shoegazing. For me, the Shoegazing is what it’s all about. Get a good buzz going and then just get lost in the drone of the guitars and drums. The Vic is a small theater and since I had seen them before, I was not bent on getting close to the stage. I was there for the music alone, and I spent most of the show in the back of the theater, shoe gazing and getting refills at the nearby bar. For maybe the last 30 minutes of the show, I decided to move up a bit, and that allowed me to get a few decent pictures. Robert, Peter and Leah all looked so cool, dressed in black and playing with a stoic confidence that remained in tact even when they amped up the intensity. The Garage/Psych Rock band Night Beats opened the show. They were excellent and their brand of music was a perfect choice to set the stage for BRMC. (Special thanks to my son Dylan, who was there with his friends, for buying me a “birthday beer.”)
I usually rely on Setlist.fm for posting a set list, but the set list from the Chicago show has not shown up. In lieu of that, I have posted the set list from the following night at another of my favorite venues, First Avenue in Minneapolis. From what I can tell, it is very similar to the Chicago show.
2. Little Thing Gone Wild
4. Beat the Devil's Tattoo
11. Nothing Compares 2 U(Prince cover) (Acoustic) – note: based on the set lists I have seen, they are doing one cover song a night. In the case of the Chicago show, the cover was Jailhouse Rock, performed as a solo by Robert.
14. Carried From the Start
22. Whatever Happened to My Rock 'n' Roll (Punk Song)
