Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness : Spoiler filled rants/review ahead
Things I loved :
1. The horror vibe of the movie. It was very cool and very unique. While I do like the general structure of MCU movie with action and humor, I loved the fact that MOM has began a new genre/ era for Marvel movies and broke the standard structure of the MCU movies.
2. Visuals were stunning. Again gory and terrifying aspect of the movie was top notch. It didn't feel like light hearted movie. Although they should have given a heads up beforehand because the kids in the theatre got quite a scare in few places. It was definitely not a children's movie.
3. Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen were fantastic in it. In this movie, Doctor Strange finally felt like an unique, complex, emotional character whereas before while I loved him, his character felt very much all about his arrogance and skill. But in this movie Cumberbatch was finally at ease with Strange and completely owned him and I finally felt the kind of magic I feel while watching any other Cumberbatch performance. And Elizabeth Olsen just elevated her performance on a even higher place than what we have seen in Wanda Vision so I guess I won't have to explain how good it is.
4. The cameos. I screamed when I watched John Krasinsky as Reed Richards and of course Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier.
Things I didn't like :
1. The chaos and madness of the movie. I know the title itself said 'madness' but I didn't expect it to be this intense. I got a headache from watching the movie. I got an headache from watching all the chaos unfolding .
2. The plot didn't add any value in the MCU or anywhere. It was just fighting and chaos. But there was not plot from going forward. No question about multiverse was answered. I guess they needed a movie to show how crazy multiverse can be but I felt like they should have balanced it out with some substantial plots as well.
3. Wanda's character assassination. I understand Wanda's villainous transformation but I hated how it was from the very beginning of the movie. Wanda was in a good place in the end of Wanda Vision and if they had shown her slow transformation to the evil side in the movie or he being bad due to the influence of the Darkhold with the progression of the movie, it would not have felt this bad. Wand is after all one of the Avengers who sacrificed her everything to save the world. And in this movie she was committing mass murder left and right from the get go. If she was supposed to be evil in this movie, they shouldn't have left Wanda Vision (post-credit scene aside) on such a hopeful note.
4. The death of the Illuminati. While I know it's not that big of a deal since they were just accessories in this movie, but I hated how they introduced these characters and then just killed them within minutes.
Overall I am not sure whether I loved the film or hated it. It had its moments and was definitely a first in MCU in many aspects. But it was not a great MCU movie. No one is going to claim it as a favorite and neither will it be considered as a masterpiece. And last but not the least, Marvel should fire Michael Waldron as his writing of Multiversal plot is messy, chaotic and non-sense at times. Someone needs to tell him that this is not Rick and Morty. I am scared for Loki s2 now.
