so apparently fips’ new book came out today and he says that players still shouldn’t come out until their careers are done because homophobia is still prevalent (i say still because he discussed this in his last book).
and look. i see where he’s coming from. i see that he thinks he’s an advisor trying to protect these players mental well being. but that is the absolute wrong thing to say!!! by saying that, he’s essentially accepting homophobia is a unavoidable part of society. or blaming the victim instead of the homophobe. its so frustrating and makes me really disappointed in him and not want to buy his book.
it also makes what 11freunde did an even cooler thing. because what they did was the right thing! a bunch of players saying ‘hey we’d support you! fuck everyone else, we’ll be there for you’ which is SOOO much better than saying don’t do it bc homophobos. like yeah gay people know homophobia exists. they don’t need some straight footballer to tell them that. what they don’t know is who is supporting them and will support them if they choose to make the choice to come out.
