Olive Snook enjoyed her time with Digby. He was a surrogate for the human connection she wanted with the pie maker. Her desperate attempts to connect to someone so disconnected terrified him. That didn’t stop her from trying.

In her own way, Olive identified with the plight of the abandoned pie. It was meant for someone, and without a little effort, it would never be with the one it was meant to be with.

“I was awful and I’m ashamed of myself because I know what it feels like to be abandoned, how you think you’re worthless and unloveable and your heart hardens to the person who did it to you.
