some helpful stuff 4 ppl in texas rn !!
The mayor of a city in Texas reportedly wrote a Facebook post telling residents it was not the government’s job to care for them during trying times, telling them “the strong will survive and the weak will parish [sic]” as an unprecedented winter storm leaves millions without power.
Mayor Tim Boyd of Colorado City, Texas, appears to have made a post on Facebook complaining that his constituents were calling on the government to help them as Winter Storm Uri leaves tens of thousands of people across the country without heat and electricity.
“Let me hurt some feelings while I have a minute!!” Mr Boyd said in his post. “No one owes you are [sic] your family anything; nor is it the local government’s responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim it’s your choice! The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!!”
He then complained that residents were looking for a “hand out” and told people they should have been personally prepared to deal with catastrophic circumstances like the massive winter storm that struck the region, leaving Texans in some areas without heat in single digit temperatures.
“I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn handout! If you don’t have electricity you step up and come up with a game plan to keep your family warm and safe. If you have no water you deal without and think outside of the box to survive and provide water for your family,” he wrote.
Mr Boyd then accused people of being “lazy” because they are waiting for their power to come back on. He did not offer suggestions as to how individual people could restore Texas’s failed power grid amid the devastating storm.
“If you are sitting at home in the cold because you have no power and are waiting for someone to come rescue you because your [sic] lazy, is direct result of your raising!” he wrote.
Later, Mr Boyd blamed people’s expectations that the government would serve its basic function and provide services for residents to a “socialist government where they feed people to believe that the FEW will work and others will become dependent on handouts.”
It is unclear which government he was referring to, as he is the head of the local government and Donald Trump and the Republican Party ran the country for the past four years until less than a month ago.
Safety with non-electric heating, aka "Don’t Fuck Around with Carbon Monoxide”
If you don’t have to deal with this kind of cold normally you might be tempted to use what you have for heat, but you might not know what’s safe. This is non-exhaustive and I’ll link as many resources as I can, but the bottom line is you gotta be extremely careful when burning anything for heat because even with ventilation carbon monoxide can easily build up and that shit can kill you fast if you don’t notice.
-Never idle a car in an enclosed space. If your garage is attached to your house, never warm up the car in your garage even with the door open. If your garage is detached, you can warm up the car in the garage as long as the garage door is wide open.
-Don’t sleep in an idling car, especially during a snowstorm. A few reasons: First, if it runs out of gas during the night you’re stuck with no heat AND no fuel to get anywhere. If it snows overnight it could block your exhaust pipe and allow CO to flood the cabin. And this last one is rarer but even with a perfectly clear exhaust pipe, there could be a leak in your exhaust system that allows CO to build up.
If the car is the only warmth available, idle it for brief periods to warm up and then turn it off and set an alarm to idle it later. Open the windows every once in a while to vent the air.
-Never pile up snow around your car. Either you got snowed in, or you’re stranded off the side of the road. You’d think that snow will insulate the car and let you stay warm longer- DO NOT. Snow makes it harder for rescuers to find you. It gets your car even more stuck and it’s really easy to damage your car in the process of digging it back out. Finally if you block the exhaust system too much then CO will quickly build up in the cabin.
-Never start a car when the tailpipe is blocked by snow. Even in the short time it takes to dig out the car, CO can reach deadly levels. Dig the car out first, THEN start it.
-Never use propane or charcoal (like a grill) for heat indoors. I get it, it’s available, but it’s incredibly dangerous. People have already been hospitalized in Houston this week from using their grills for heat. These grills are made to be used outside, where there’s no way for dangerous gases to build up. Also, it’s a huge fire risk.
-Never use an oven or gas range for heat. Same reasons as propane.
-If your house has a fireplace and chimney, don’t use it unless you know it’s been inspected and deemed safe. Just like a blocked exhaust pipe on your car, a blocked chimney won’t vent CO properly and it can build up in your home. Also, if it hasn’t been inspected in a long time, it may be structurally unsound or full of stuff like twigs or squirrel nests that are a serious fire risk.
-If you have a gas generator, make sure it’s far enough away from your house. Never run it inside, or in a basement or garage.
-Get a battery-powered CO detector.

It’s looking like power plants in Texas unplugged to avoid skyrocketing natural gas spot market rates that went to hundreds of $$ to avoid losses. @ERCOT_ISO has now passed an emergency order allowing them to charge consumers those spot market prices. Capitalism at its finest.
They created a “scarcity” and are now planning to charge Texans for the “demands” of energy many cannot even access.
My friends and colleagues are freezing in the dark. We’re being told to keep the thermostats to 68F or below and minimize energy use in residential areas.
Meanwhile, downtown high rises are still lit up, a sparkling bright city skyline surrounded by blacked out neighborhoods.
