It’s a minor pet peeve, but it is everywhere today so errrr…. please keep in mind that “Rest in Peace”/RIP literally comes from a latin phrase and is a very very deeply Christian expression.

When talking about the departed, Jews say “may their memory be a blessing.”

So please, when talking about a dead person who is Jewish, try to keep in mind that RIP is a Christian phrase.

I never knew that I thought RIP was just a general thing. This is why posts like this are important

the problem with saying “may they find peace in the afterlife” is that, at least for jewish people, quite a few of us don’t believe in the afterlife. you can be an agnostic/atheist jew — so saying you hope we find peace in the afterlife isn’t really the catchall expression you think it is. it might not be quite as christian, but it still hinges on christonormativity (which isn’t to say that christians are the only ones who believe in the afterlife, obviously, but in today’s society, people talking about the “afterlife” often mean the christian one), so it’s best just to use what we ask you to use instead of coming up with something on your own and assuming it works for everyone.
