why give dean a construction job when he’s with lisa when he’s said that other careers like firefighting and mechanic work are much more appealing to him and things he actually WANTS to do. like the fact that dean has THE white working class poster boy job while living in suburbia with his epic hot yoga wife and her son (and dean is NOT cucked for raising ben because he’s a carbon copy of dean) is comical. it doesn’t feel real because it’s not supposed to be real. he’s handed the quintessential “apple pie” life and is miserable. I know it’s supposed to be intentionally idyllic to contrast with dean’s deep dark desire to hunt, but we know dean doesn’t really want to hunt either, given how many times he’s expressed things like “I’m tired” and “I want us to be a family again”. it’s just the thing he does when he doesn’t know what else to do. dean is being presented with two worlds - retired suburban bliss and gritty heroic saviour - and he is deeply unhappy with both of those options. what he yearns for is a thing he’s never experienced before, and the show is EXPLICITLY telling us that a white picket fence (at least with lisa, who is The Perfect Woman) is not that thing.
6x01 is beguiling because the most plausible explanation for dean rejecting the literal platonic ideal of white cishet society is that he’s not cishet. or at the very least that he’s deeply uncomfortable with the demands it imposes on him. why is he uncomfortable you ask? oh I don’t know. who can say. but if you say he’s bisexual or gay than you’re a hysterical freak with terminal shipping brain
