i feel like something that’s so fun about watching d20 specifically is the intersection of comedy improvisation and roleplaying. like actively choosing your reaction in the moment to make the bit funnier AND incorporating that into your character?

specifically thinking about the way gorgug and kristen as characters walk that line — kristen’s inability to take anything seriously in fhjy is partially ally going for the throat comedically (“what are you, 4 different dogs?”, “heyyy girlie”, stripping down in the hallway, the interaction w her parents) but then it fully becomes part of kristens character arc of “chaos isn’t cute”.

and gorgug at the festival was obviously zac choosing to be the straight man and playing up his reaction for laughs (“the lawnmower? the lawnmower?”) but it also perfectly fits gorgugs character of awkward kid with extremely vocally sex positive parents + barbarian rage = kid who’s absolutely fucking had it today, and just adds that beautiful roundness to gorgugs mostly peaceful character

#like most actual play campaigns nail the lighthearted tone and the serious drama moments ofc. but d20 really shines with the bits imo#dimension 20#fantasy high#fantasy high junior year#even in stuff like starstruck or neverafter… the improv truly elevates characters that are fully rounded good characters#and just elevates them to a level above that#i just love watching funny d20 IH seasons where you can tell the improviser/bit demon takes over the character

personally im holding neverafter and starstruck so gently in my hands. my two fave standalone IH d20 seasons like fantasy high is of course incredible and inimitable, and acoc is amazing but i just adore neverafter and starstruck like perfect blends of tension/feel good/off the chart hilarious bits and so goddamn in the pocket tone-wise

watching d20 as someone who doesn’t live in the US… can someone explain entertainment jobs (?) to me 😭 what do you mean crown of candy was filmed into the night after the cast’s full time jobs as writers. a bunch of the cast have their own podcasts both under other companies (headgum?) but also have their own patreons for it? a lot of them are in writers rooms so they both write and perform? sorry if this is weird to ask but are they paid per appearance? or do they draw a regular paycheck…?

thinking about riz and how his mom and his weird romance partner both think the bad kids are bad friends to him… thinking about how riz took on every single stress token for his friends… thinking about how riz always puts his everything into helping his friends and being there for them. and the bad kids aren’t Bad Friends but sometimes they take/need a lot, and they’d be fine if he pushed back, but he never pushes back? thinking about fig’s one nice note made riz break down and send gorgug WALLS of text about how much it meant to him

bad kids as entities from the magnus archives

  • riz: definitely the eye. saw another post on here that put it a lot better but i think the drive to solve a mystery at the cost of your own body and mind and relationships is very eye coded
  • adaine: the desolation!!! i know fig’s aesthetic matches it more but adaine killing her father in cold blood is so desolation coded to me. it’s about the white hot rage, the desire to take something that has hurt you and raze it all to the ground mercilessly
  • fig: the lonely, her love for her friends and desire for attachment but also her inability to take on that attachment as herself (at least before ayda) feels like her worst nightmare would be being abandoned by her loved ones and alone
  • kristen: it’s gotta be the stranger for all the nightmare king stuff AND baron who’d be right at home in the circus… but somehow i think she would be an avatar of the Vast. like she and simon fairchild should have a podcast together. something about the parallels between endless possibility of doubt and the representation of the Vast as free fall through open sky
  • gorgug: the slaughter… the fear of random uncontrollable violent rage lashing out and hurting the ones you love, the similarities between out of control barbarian rage and those “driven mad by slaughter”. i think tbe lack of control would be truly terrifying to a kid who has struggled with it his whole life
  • fabian: man. hate to repeat ones but also the lonely to me. junior year really cemented it but i think it’s always been obvious that fabians relationship with his parents (mostly his dad) has always felt like he needed to perform (“write your name on the face of the world”) to receive that validation… i think his biggest fear would be never achieving that = being left alone and unloved
