Rings of Power, S2

First and last. Promise!

I was over it before. Now, its just not worth my time.

Did I miss the episode where Galadriel actually mentions that Sauron is back? Gil-Galad puts on a ring, and Celebrimbor charges ahead with "Lets make more!"?

...and the big guy in Rhûn has already encountered Istari, before the reports of the Stranger?

At this point, I just don't care. Never mind care enough to put amusing little tags attached to this.

A bad explanation of Tolkien mythology and the story of Rings of Power (Revised, Full, with Hidden Spoilers)

In the beginning, Eru (the Creator) created the Ainur. The Music of the Ainur created Eä (the Universe) and Arda (the World). The Ainur who entered that Creation as its guardians are known as Valar (greater Ainur) and Maiar (lesser Ainur).

The Ainur are beings of Ëala (incorporeal spirit). They create Fanar (physical manifestations) to house their Ëalar so that they can be physically present in Arda.

In a sense, Ainur are angels. Valar are the upper choir and Maiar are the lower choir.

Many of the Ainur who entered Creation have names. One of them is Vala Aulë (the Smith). One of his associates, Maia Mairon, eventually shifted allegiances to Vala Melkor (the Mighty).

Vala Melkor, the bad boy of the group, was cast out and retreated to Arda. He continued to misbehave on Arda, stealing three Silmarilli and destroying the Two Trees for good measure. The Elves didn’t like this, and gave him a new name: Morgoth (the Great Foe). His new associate, Maia Mairon, assumed a new name for himself: Sauron.

Details aside, a Great War was waged, Morgoth was defeated and cast out to the Void (outside Eä), but Sauron remains at large.

In response to the trouble caused by Sauron, Vala Manwë (the King) formed the Heron Istarion (Order of Wizards) to deal with the problem.

At this point, Rings of Power goes all fanfic, and everything we assumed goes out the window. Just roll with it and click through the "Keep Reading" to see all the spoilery details, both major and minor.

Who is the Stranger? (no spoiler)

Tap the #ainur tag below to search my blog if you need to translate stuff. ;)

We already know that Sauron had a hand in making the 20 rings. Since Celebrimbor was already approached to make the rings, it is not likely that he became a meteor AFTER that and plopped down in Harfoot-land with amnesia. So, NOT Sauron.

Given that Rings of Power is Tolkien-inspired fan fiction, we cannot assume the timeline here. The Mythology of Middle Earth has five Istari being sent to deal with Sauron. My guess he is Vala Yavanna's emissary Maia Aiwendil, sent to protect Nature. (He was sad about the fireflies) However, if Adar is correct, that Istar Fireball is a bit late. ...but why wouldn't Galadriel already know about Maia Mairon? Maybe his Ëala is still bouncing around? Is that what Maia Aiwendil is here for?

Then again, a Time article/interview clearly states that Eminem & Co come from Rhûn. Maybe the Stranger actually is Mairon's Fala 2.0b1? ...but again, why sky dive without a parachute??

We don't know. Definitely an interesting puzzle. To be honest, the Stranger, the Ûruk, and the Dwarves are the only interesting things to me. Right now, I couldn't care less about Humans and Elves.

Ah, Rings of Power did it again. Our sociopathic Mary Sue rides in on horseback to save the day. How?? Did she get a text? Does her horse have a GPS jammed up it’s ass?

Now that Halbrand and Isildur are on the continent where they belong, and assuming Adar is not full of crap, can she please just fuck off to Imladris and weave baskets for the next few hundred years?

The well scene during the battle was just out of place. …and how did Adar still not know who Halbrand is after Galadriel calls out his name? Someone slap the writers and the director.

Who (what) is Sauron in Rings of Power?

Sauron is a Maia, a lesser Ainu. The Ainur are beings of Ëala (incorporeal spirit). They create Fanar (physical manifestations) to house their Ëalar so that they can be physically present in Arda.

Sauron can create a fana in any form he wants to. (For all we know, Sauron has Galadriel locked in a box like Alastor Moody. Put THAT in your headcanon!). Fanar can be damaged or destroyed while the Ëala will simply wander off unharmed.

Who is he in Rings of Power? Halbrand? The Stranger? The Dweller? Adar? Disa? We don’t know. The one thing we do know is that Sauron has met Celebrimbor.

  • The Stranger - Sauron falls from the sky AFTER talking to Celebrimbor?
  • Halbrand - Sauron is almost eaten by a sea monster and floats away?
  • Adar - Sauron is all depressed about the sun going away?
  • The Dweller - Sauron is investigating the crater left behind by the Stranger?
  • Disa - Sauron helps the dwarves find Mithril, which can be used to make the Rings.

Hmm… which one makes the most sense? Disa!!! Then again, Disa did have two children, so that’s one hell of a long con. Maybe not.

The Dwarves mention Aulë on occasion. Vala Aulë’s domain is smithing/metalworking. (Get it??) One of Vala Aulë’s associates was Maia Mairon. Maia Mairon shifted allegiances to Vala Melkor, and eventually became known as Sauron.

Sauron, a skilled metalworker (previously under Aulë), approached Celebrimbor about making special rings, while Sauron planned to make one for himself.

And that’s what happened just before Rings of Power.

* The Valar eventually sent a group of Maiar to Arda to deal with Sauron’s shenanigans. They are known as Istari (or wizards!)
