Dick has so many connections to other characters. In many ways, even more than Superman or Batman, Nightwing is the soul, the linchpin, of the DCU. He’s well respected by everyone, known to the JLA, the Titans, the Outsiders, Birds of Prey – everyone looks to him for advice, for friendship, for his skills. He’s the natural leader of the DCU.” - Phil Jimenez

~Casually reminds people that Dick Grayson is both The Heart and The Leader of the entire freakin’ DCU and if you don’t think that’s awesome then frankly I don’t even know what to do with you~

“To me, the core of that attraction is that she is a better reporter than he is. Think about being Superman for a second. The Olympic record for weightlifting is 1,038 lbs., but you could lift more than that as a child. The record for the 100 meter dash is 9.58 seconds, but you can travel over 51 miles in that time. Going to Vegas? You don’t need your X-Ray vision to win at Blackjack, because you can just count the cards while holding down a conversation about nuclear physics. Without really trying, you are better at just about everything than anyone else in the world. However, (as Mark Waid once pointed out in a podcast with Marv Wolfman) none of that really translates to your chosen profession. Typing really fast does not help your prose. Being able to lift a tank does not help you convince a source to go on record. It is as near to competing straight up with normal people as Superman would ever be capable of. Even then, it comes easily enough to him that you get a pretty lofty perch at a great paper very early in your career. It is just in this one context, there is someone better than you are: Lois Lane. As mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent, you reach up for the first time in your life and she rejects you. To me, it is an inversion of the Luthor story. Luthor sees someone above him and feels hate. Superman sees someone above him and feels love.”

imagine the “Robin meets the JL while Batman is away” trope but it’s inverted. instead of being funny and interesting and extroverted all of the Robins just bolt. bolt, hide, or fight. B told them not to ever let themselves get cornered and to run if a meta sets eyes on them. so they run, they hide, and they fight back with a tiny shard of holdout Kryptonite B had embedded in their gauntlet. they dig their boots in, clench their fists, and prepare to be immovable at <100 lbs.

Of course Robin runs, hides, and fights. They introduced themselves as "Your Dad's friends."

HC that the average life expectancy in Gotham is actually four years higher than the national average because they collectively just keep refusing to die

the general concensus being "if we die the clown wins"

Gotham really is the perfect scientist trap, like every scientist in the world is either at "I could fix it" or "I could make it worse" with a few that are like "I could study so so SO good it and win a Nobel"

It's basically the most frantic game of whack-a-mole/herding cats. All STEM majors have a 100-level required class on why you can't go to Gotham.

I bets that's really hard/confusing for the kid from Gotham who whent to school out of state and took Gotham 101 as an easy A.

And ends up fistfighting a TA because they used a Google image of her grandma's house in a slide show.

New backstory for Calendar Man as a Gerontologist who just absolutely lost it

I am now imagining a Gothamite with one of those suicide prevention key chains except it says "I will not beat the clown to the grave." and people just know.

"The best thing we can do with power is give it away" - On the leftist critique of superhero narratives as authoritarian power fantasies:

The ongoing "Jason Todd is a cop" debate has reminded me of a brilliant brief image essay by Joey deVilla. [EDIT: I SCREWED UP! This was created in 2019 by the guy who runs the Midnighter-Core page on Facebook, and Joey just reposted it!]

So here it is, images first and the full essay text below:

"A common leftist critique of superhero comics is that they are inherently anti-collectivist, being about small groups of individuals who hold all the power, and the wisdom to wield that power. I don’t disagree with this reading. I don’t think it’s inaccurate. Superheroes are their own ruling class, the concept of the übermensch writ large. But it’s a sterile reading. It examines superhero comics as a cold text, and ignores something that I believe is fundamental, especially to superhero storytelling: the way people engage with text. Not what it says, but how it is read. The average comic reader doesn’t fantasize about being a civilian in a world of superheroes, they fantasize about being a superhero. One could charitably chalk this up to a lust for power, except for one fact… The fantasy is almost always the act of helping people. Helping the vulnerable, with no reward promised in return. Being a century into the genre, we’ve seen countless subversions and deconstructions of the story. But at its core, the superhero myth is about using the gifts you’ve been given to enrich the people around you, never asking for payment, never advancing an ulterior motive. We should (and do) spend time nitpicking these fantasies, examining their unintended consequences, their hypocrisies. But it’s worth acknowledging that the most eduring childhood fantasy of the last hundred years hasn’t been to become rich. Superheroes come from every class (don’t let the MCU fool you). The most enduring fantasy is to become powerful enough to take the weak under your own wing. To give, without needing to take. So yes, the superhero myth, as a text, isn’t collectivist. But that’s not why we keep coming back to it. That’s not why children read it. We keep coming back to it to learn one simple lesson… The best thing we can do with power IS GIVE IT AWAY." - Joey deVilla, 2021 https://www.joeydevilla.com/2021/07/04/happy-independence-day-superhero-style/

Making Bruce the kind of guy to work through his thoughts out loud when he knows hes allowed to. This leads to him rubberducking off of anyone who will let him, including, but not limited to his boys and assorted JL members. He latches on, and suddenly, this is not Bruce's Case, its Our case.

Despite him doing this to anyone that will listen, Clark tends to be the most available victim due to his extreme patience, his investigative skills, and love of listening to people ramble at him <3

Definitely the sexiest thing about Harvey Dent across Batman continuities is when, y'know shortly after losing half his face, he starts working his way through the Gotham underworld and you can very quickly tell that this isn't what you'd call a rampage. 'Rampage' implies he's acting pretty much purely on impulse, but no, he sits down with various mob goons, maybe goes apeshit on a few of them, does his coin flip, et cetera, but the whole time, you can tell, he has thought about this for years. He's figured out all the gang hierarchies, he knows all the hangouts, he knows exactly where the gaps in his knowledge are and whose ass he has to kick to fill them, and he's working his way through it like a grocery list. And it's clear that for years the law was the only thing holding him back from doing this and now it's not holding him back anymore. It's equal parts terrifying and satisfying and anyway that breach of the line of law and the childhood friend thing is absolutely why he's actually Batman's greatest Rogue. Because Batman has also thought like, way way, way too much about what he would do if he didn't have his code. Do you see the vision here???

Every time I see a “Batman’s greatest rogue” post I realize how great the whole gallery is. Harvey, what he’d be without his code. Joker, the test of his code. Freeze, his compassion for others but need to protect people. Riddler, his skills as a detective. Scarecrow, his weaponization of fear. Bane, a man with strength and intelligence that Batman can’t defeat conventionally. Ect. They each play on part of Batman’s character. Truly he has one of if not the best rogue gallery.

aparently in the latest fantastic 4 comics johnny storm has been in a relationship with an alien, and that would be pretty standard affair for marvel heroes, right.

except someone at marvel with fucking balls of steel and the biggest brain in the known universe made the alien look... actually alien

this is the greatest thing ive seen in my life, is almost enough to make me want to read the comic

I find it Pleasing that that alien is clearly based off of a Hallucigenia.

What a deep cut into the Burgess Shale.

This was such a good fucking issue also! The emotional arcs! The ANGST! The ethical dilemma! The way they actually TALK and ARGUE about the ethics of their impossible-superhero-situation! The earnest sincerity of it all, the choosing life choosing hope finding another way!

Seriously y'all should be reading this series, and at the absolute least you need to go read this issue.

Because yeah it's just one issue. They pack what would ordinarily be at least a six-issue story-arc of modern comics into one issue.

It's a masterpiece.

Despite that fucking mustache.
