What is most commonly recognized as insults are ones that are spoken or written in correspondence between two rival parties.

However, with social context taken into consideration, there are often certain actions and gestures that can translate into an insult to another.

Or even with a language barrier, what a person can read from body language alone can infer to their intentions and their opinions of them.

After all, when a person’s intent is to chip away at a person’s esteem, it is often difficult to hide that as it seeps into their body language, and even their actions.

When we think of a traitor, we often think about what they did and what that caused. We don’t often think about what they leave behind and how that causes a shift that is often seen.

Sometimes, the evidence of their betrayal is visual and is left behind like a scar. (Or it could even be a scar itself!)

When the trust you place in someone is misplaced, you can not often come out of the experience unscathed. 

The change is often reflected in their appearance -- where an observer can often suspect something amiss happened in their past to mold them in such a way.

There are often many things that we are certain of in life, but it also takes very little to shift and change the path in front of you.

The change may not be one they are willing to do -- but one that is necessary to survive. And it is a big enough change that the person may not come out recognizable to the people they once knew.

A change in allegiance. A change in ideals. Enough that they would likely change in appearance to reflect that as well.

We think of family heirlooms as items that are passed down from generation to generation. But often, the items can be passed to other hands that go beyond familial blood.

What’s important is the item itself and what it represents.

It’s often something that cannot be replaced.

Even if it is something that may not look particularly unique or valuable, to the people it belongs to, it is irreplaceable.

Time passes so quickly. Before many can realize, things change and the whatever was once there is gone.

It’s often too disorienting to stay in the darkness so long. Especially when you’re trying to find your way.

The natural reaction is to find a way to illuminate the darkness in some way.

For some, they have a natural evolutionary quality that allows them to see through the darkness. For others, they have to make their own light.

It’s not always obvious -- not always in a kiss or a touch. 

Though, from the onlooker, an action or gesture can still feel intimate and considerate. An act of love. 

Whether it is romantic or platonic, it all depends on how well the person in question knows the other. It has to be thoughtful. Full of consideration.

Even something as simple as sitting in silence, and being comforted by the presence of the other is an act of closeness.

For your character, how do they show how much they care for another?

When you work for a long time on a large plan or project and come close to completing it, how does that feel?

That moment of anticipation and hope for the better. Small smile as they carefully place the last piece on top of their tower. So close!

It’ll only take a few more minutes at most and they will be past the point of process, and into the state of completion. 

What are they working on? What about it requires a lot of time and effort? 

...And will they actually be able to finish what they are working on?

Danger is erratic, unsteady and often dark. When you think of what danger looks like, think about how something would contrast.

When someone runs through a forest, out of breath, they find themselves in an open field where the light pours in and the air feels breathable again.

When a child is able to steal into the embrace of someone who cares for them deeply, out of harm’s way.

Being safe is being able to take a breath and rest, to relax and slow down.

What would “safe” be for your character?

FANART FRIDAY PROMPT: LIKE NIGHT AND DAY

Stories are about opposing sides, opposites, and differences that cut a very specific visual picture. Colors and forms oppose each other in stark contrast and hint at how the characters could act.

Night and day. Darkness and light.

Both are very different from the other, yet one can transform from one to the other should they choose to. Still, what is it that makes opposites feel so different? What is it about the visual contrasts that feel so dramatic and clearly defined?

Design for two characters (or two OCs), so they can have a dramatic visual contrast to each other. It doesn’t have to be light vs dark, but can be anything regarding visual opposites.

FANART FRIDAY PROMPT:  SIMILAR TASTES

We’ve established pretty clearly that what a person wears is really transparent on who they are as people.

Some people have very specific tastes, but sometimes, once in a while -- some people find that they like the look of it as well. Perhaps they look good in it too?

Choose a character and have them wear an outfit that they have borrowed or...”borrowed” from another character.

Narrative can be told even when there are no words.

Though this is not the only reason why visual story telling should not always contain dialogue.

Sometimes, the words are not meant to be heard by the viewer. Instead, we’re meant to focus on the moment and linger in it.

There are emotions and actions ongoing -- are they clear?

Make a moment for a character where they are speaking, but cannot be heard. What is the atmosphere? What is happening?

Despite where they came from, who they came to be, there was a time when they had a more bright-eyed, hopeful outlook on the world.

This doesn’t necessarily mean a time when they were children. But rather, a time before things started getting really serious. Things are brighter, more light hearted and full of wonder.

Choose a character (or an OC) and delve into their backstory. 

Portray a simpler time. A time before they became the noteworthy person everyone recognized them to be (for better or worse).
