NASA Data Sonification: Black Hole Remix

In this sonification of Perseus. the sound waves astronomers previously identified were extracted and made audible for the first time. The sound waves were extracted outward from the center. (source)

No, thank you. I did not need to hear the souls of a universe calling to me from the afterlife.

Someone needs to make a space thriller/horror/whatever with this mixed into the music

why does it sound exactly like what it feels like a black hole should sound like

my bones are scared now.

Love when this turns up on my dash.

I know this image is just an artistic rendering, but was Chicxulub even close to being that big?

Avatar

YES, ABSOLUTELY. if anything, that paleoart UNDERSTATES it!

the Chicxulub Impactor was about six miles wide, meaning that when its bottom edge slammed into the atlantic ocean at roughly 20 km/s, its top edge was still in the upper atmosphere.

Here's an excerpt from Peter Brannon's book The Ends of the World:

"These numbers are precise without usefully conveying the scale of the calamity. What they mean is that a rock larger than Mount Everest hit planet Earth traveling twenty times faster than a bullet. This is so fast that it would have traversed the distance from the cruising altitude of a 747 to the ground in 0.3 seconds. The asteroid itself was so large that, even at the moment of impact, the top of it might have still towered more than a mile above the cruising altitude of a 747. In its nearly instantaneous descent, it compressed the air below it so violently that it briefly became several times hotter than the surface of the sun.

“The pressure of the atmosphere in front of the asteroid started excavating the crater before it even got there,” Rebolledo said. “Then when the meteorite touched ground zero, it was totally intact. It was so massive that the atmosphere didn’t even make a scratch on it.”

Unlike the typical Hollywood CGI depictions of asteroid impacts, where an extraterrestrial charcoal briquette gently smolders across the sky, in the Yucatan it would have been a pleasant day one second and the world was already over by the next. As the asteroid collided with the earth, in the sky above it where there should have been air, the rock had punched a hole of outer space vacuum in the atmosphere. As the heavens rushed in to close this hole, enormous volumes of earth were expelled into orbit and beyond — all within a second or two of impact.

“So there’s probably little bits of dinosaur bone up on the moon,” I asked.

“Yeah, probably.”

"it briefly became several times hotter than the surface of the sun"

hey also i recommend everyone google chicxulub just cuz google has a fun animation of a meteor landing and the screen shaking

Sometimes I wonder how did ANYTHING survive that

Hey, are you from the US? (If not you can help too) Do you like astronomy, or just care about science in general?

The x-ray space telescope Chandra is about to have its funding cut. Despite working for 30 years, it is still very much operational; it is not more expensive than the other space telescopes; and, above all, there are currently no plans to get it a replacement, like for example Hubble is getting.

You can find the campaign for saving Chandra here, if you are a US citizen you can contact your congress representative, and if not, you can co-sign a letter that is to be sent in support.

HE GRABS THE CUP BUT THEN HE DROPS THE PEN 0.0003 SECONDS LATER

AND HE LOOKS UP AT THE CEILING INSTEAD OF AT THE GROUND WHEN HE CAN’T FIND THEM

I CAN’T STOP LAUGHING HE JUST DROPS IT

IT’S NOT FUNNY IT’S VERY LOGICAL THAT HE WOULD HAVE ADJUSTED TO LIVING LIFE WHILE HE WAS IN SPACE BECAUSE IT’S DIFFERENT FROM EARTH BUT I CAN’T FUCKING BREATHE

*THUNK*

i love it so much every time i see it

“ugh stupid gravity”

IM FUXKING CSHAKING

I haven’t seen this post on my dash in *years* bless this

Bless, this is absolutely amazing

I love this. It’s so gestural and he’s so exasperated about gravity.

The perfect comedic timing of the NASA logo.

CHANDRAYAAN 3 HAS LANDED. IT HAS LANDED. DO YOU KNOW HOW BIG OF A THING THIS IS. FIRST OF ALL, huge step for mankind cuz well the south pole is unexplored territory so the findings will add on to future major researches and programs and it will play a huge part in our understanding of the moon's geography AND scientists have said that there might be remenants of ice and other elements which will again add on to or understanding of the moon and will be very important for future scientists and researchers. Also, this successful landing makes India the first ever country to land on the south pole of the moon and the and has also become the fourth country to master the technology of soft landing, making history. It took around 6 billion (600 crores) to make( THAT'S A SHITTON OF MONEY ). It was launched on July 14 and landed today, August 23. It's predecessor, chandrayaan 2 was not quite a success but this second attempt, which was very successful is going to enhance our understanding of the moon. And I am losing my balls over this landing because I'm a HUGE NERD FOR ASTRONOMY.

Do you ever think about the way that Crowley must feel about the way humanity loves space? The way we for the entirety of our existence have looked up in awe and wonder? The way that wonder makes us look up and start asking questions we would have never have thought to ask otherwise? The way something so far away can inspire us to do truly impossible things for the sake of an answer? The way that we are constantly changing and growing and evolving all out of that desire to look and see and explore the space that was meant to teach us about the unlimited scope of God? That we looked at that and said. No. We want to understand. We want to see it all. We want to reach up into that space and connect to it. We send messages through space hoping against all odds they will make their way to someone who wants to reach back. We build machines to go where we cannot and teach them to sing to themselves for no other reason than the fact we love them. And, when we lose one we still reach out to them to send them off with a song because even if they are no longer listening we can't help but to tell them they mattered. We can't help it. We end up putting so much of ourselves into them that we can't help but to love them the same way he and Aziraphale can't help but to love us. All for the sake of wanting to know and understand something that is supposed to be beyond us.

I feel like nobody on Tumblr knows that the international space station is being discontinued.

Did you know that? In less than a decade it will be gone

From the article:

"NASA said that commercially operated space platforms would replace the ISS as a venue for collaboration and scientific research.

“The private sector is technically and financially capable of developing and operating commercial low-Earth orbit destinations, with NASA’s assistance. We look forward to sharing our lessons learned and operations experience with the private sector to help them develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective destinations in space,” said Phil McAlister, director of commercial space at NASA Headquarters in a statement."

Also it's mentioned that China is making their own space station, and that Russia is pulling out of the ISS in 2025 and making their own.

I don't think i'm alone in saying please don't make space subject to the free market. Capitalism doesn't belong in space, let it die here on the earth

Unfortunately, it seems that national space programs already don't have enough money, and won't get any anytime soon, so this privatization is imminent. No space race to win- no reason to fund NASA more than necessary.

Hey besties! Don’t forget to look up at the sky on February 1st and 10th to see the comet pass by! It will be visible to the naked eye! This comet, C/2022 E3 (ZTF), last passed by Earth 50,000 years ago. This was when Neanderthals walked Earth! 💫

Curb your expectations on how well visible exactly it will be though- you might need very dark skies and binoculars to actually spot it!

It might also be good to know where on the sky it will be- afaik it will be close to the northern star, at least in the northern hemisphere- in the southern hemisphere it might be even less visible, unfortunately.

So good luck with seeing and/or taking photos of it! It seems my skies will be cloudy, and I live in a big city, so I probably won't be able to, hah.

Oh, and fun fact: its tail is green for the same reason Aurora Borealis is. It's the oxygen!

It wrinkles my brain that Jupiter’s moon Europa has oceans that are sixty miles deep, while Earth’s oceans only reach seven miles deep at most. I’m willing to bet good money that there’s life in Europa’s oceans. Like five bucks. You hear me, NASA? I bet you five bucks that there’s life on Europa… Now that there’s money and reputation on the line, I bet they send a mission there real quick.

I have no idea when this was originally posted, but NASA is working on their Europa mission RIGHT NOW to look for alien life! But get this, they theorize that because of the depth, gravity, and composition of the oceans, any organisms that lived there would be waaay bigger than aquatic life on Earth. So far everything’s going well with regards to their Europa mission so they should have a spacecraft on its way to look for giant sea monsters in space in only a few years. (The planned date is in the early 2020s.)

Looks like my negotiations worked. You’re welcome, humanity.

I’ve never been gripped with such cold terror and pure delight in my LIFE

explaining to an 18th century sailor that we’re looking for sea monsters in space.

a commission for @bosstheme of one of their poems!!

[ ID: seven digital illustrations of a poem set in space. the full text reads, “Tight scattered universe, infinite nowhere,  a frozen hot vaccum embraces you whole. You are an explorer, but only a viewer, you came to absorb, not to touch, not to hold. but it does not know this, this life-giving reaper the place between galaxies where you have flown. its lifel-ending grasp is what makes you eternal. the grave of the astronaut, close and unknown.” the first image shows the first line of text in between two planets and stars. the second image shows the next line of text around an aastronaut which is floating in a dark expanse of space surrounded by red space matter. the third drawing shows a closer look at the astronauts helmet with the next lines of text next to and then on top of the astronauts hemlet, the second panel in this drawing shows a downward view of the astronauts legs with the next lines of text above them. the fourth image shows the astronaut floating untethered, we see the life line of the suit has been broken. above the life line is the next line of text, and there are two panels below the astronaut which show more colorful space gas and the next line of the poem. the fifth image shows another expanse of space with colorful galaxies on the top and bottom of the drawing and the next line of the poem in the darkness between.  the sixth image shows the astronaut floating in darkness with their limbs outstretched, very subtle lines are circling their body while the next line of text is beneath them. the last image shows the astronaut continuing to float, small in the void of space with red coloring and the last lines of the poem above them. /END ID]
