Archaeologist. We sometimes choose places to dig because our gut says “this is nice, I’d settle here”. I’ve had field directors say “this has paleo energy” about areas. Often we see big hill in our dig area, we dig on big hill.

Most recently, I’ve found two sites because I was walking to my next hole and saw some petrified wood I wanted. Started picking up pieces and saw a half buried biface lmao.

Other site, I was walking and imagined a little native girl running along the ridge. I had a gut feeling to dig like 5m from where the hole was. Found a utilized petrified wood flake. Could’ve written it off as a plow fact, but due to all the pet wood I’d been collecting throughout the area (I’m a greedy little thing who wants pretty rocks), I knew the was it was broken was inconsistent to how the pet wood naturally breaks.

What sealed the deal for me was cleaning the mud off, and it cut me so, yup, definitely utilized.

So glad you commented this because I was looking for the term for “people saw a pretty rock and took it with them” forEVER now and couldn’t find it. Fuckin love manuports

eternal human urges:

  • shiny rock!!
  • throw object in body of water
  • big hill. climb.
  • not come in to lab on weekend

Ok so initial information on Tumblr polls for those who are curious:

-You do not get a notification when people vote on your poll (waiting to see if you get a notification to say that your poll results are ready once the poll closes)

-YOU as the poll creator cannot see the voting data (as in which option is winning) of an active poll unless you vote in it yourself.

-Votes are anonymous, you can't see who voted on your poll.

-You can only put one poll on an individual post. If you want to conduct multiple polls you have to make multiple posts.

-The options for how long a poll is open are VERY limited- either 1 day or 1 week.

EDIT: Adding this to this particular post just so the info remains compiled in one place:

-You can't add polls in reblogs

-If the original post is older than one week it is impossible to edit a functioning poll to the original post. The polls count the time limit based on the day the ORIGINAL POST was created, not the day the POLL was created. So when you grab an older post and edit a poll into it, once you save the post the poll will show up as a finished poll with zero votes.

And notice the tone the scientists researching this.

“What do you mean the fatties live longer? This CANNOT BE RIGHT DO THE STUDIES 15 MORE TIMES!”

And when they can’t figure it out, they simply say “it’s not worth reading” to keep anything POSITIVE about fat bodies from getting out into the public eye.

Because then folks might not but into the billion dollar industry for diet fads and weight loss scams that all of these obesity doctors line their pockets with.

Because then theyd actually have to start treating their fat patients like PEOPLE.

“Willett’s complaints are starting to look less credible, however, because no one has been able to make the paradox go away. One of the most popular explanations is that fat people get more aggressive treatment than thin people, because their weight raises red flags at the doctor’s office. This seems questionable: studies show that overweight and obese people tend to avoid doctors, get fewer preventive screenings, and receive worse treatment because they’re often misdiagnosed as “fat” rather than with a specific medical condition”

Emphasis mine

Also, notice the phrasing.

“No one has been able to make the paradox go away”

They wanna get rid of that shit SO BAD. Because if fat people aren’t as OMG OBESITY CRISIS as folks love to scream, that means their fad diet scams and weight loss surgeries can’t make them millions anymore!

Fuck these obesity doctors. They outchea selling snake oil.

“People are furiously looking for some way to make this not the case,” says Deb Burgard, a clinical psychologist in Los Altos, California who treats eating disorders. “And I think that bears some comment. Theoretically we should be very happy to find out that people aren’t dying the way we thought they were going to, that there’s not going to be this terrible outcome. That people at higher weights are going to be OK.”

“One of the most popular explanations is that fat people get more aggressive treatment than thin people, because their weight raises red flags at the doctor’s office.”

*points and laughs*

I’m sorry, I’m just stuck on this part. That’s hilarious. An incomplete list of things where the suggested solution was “You should lose weight”: My badly broken ankle hurting, a severe bacterial sinus infection, panic attacks stemming from Complex PTSD …

Oh, wow this study has a pretty reputable source and a really big sample size.  Y’all could actually show this to the haters.

There are so many studies that show that ‘overweight’ people live longer, that fat people receive atrocious healthcare, that the ‘health risks’ of ‘obesity’ are WEIRDLY the exact same as those of yoyo dieting HMM I WONDER WHY THAT COULD BE, that longterm weight loss is impossible for all but 2-5% of people and those people sustain it by developing pervasive disordered food and exercise behaviours that would be correctly interpreted as mental illness is any context except Fatties Trying Appropriately Devoutly To Be Thin.

The evidence is THERE and it has BEEN THERE for decades now. People do not care. They want to smugly judge fat people and/or rake in 10s of billions of dollars a year convincing people to try not to be one of Those Bad Fat People. They do want to hear that being fat is just a body shape, with no moral value for good or ill. They do not want to hear that weight is as heritable as height. People get reeeeeaally super defensive when you ask them not talk about their endless dieting and attempts at weight loss around you, a fat person, whose body they are going to all this effort not to resemble.

Anyway join your local fat pos movement and fuck fatphobia forever.

Maybe the real paradox here lies in our assumptions about what constitutes normal weight.

Quetelet, influenced by early 19th century astronomers (!), charted human height and weight in an effort to establish ‘normality’—not health, or anything to do with medical risk at all. Quetelet believed that by constructing “l’homme moyen,” (the ‘average man’) through his chart, one could determine at what point bodies could be identified as deviantHe noted in his work that artists have long used a similar way of looking at bodies: “deviations more or less great from the mean have constituted [for artists] ugliness in body as well as vice in morals and a state of sickness with regard to the constitution”.

BMI has always been about morality, not health.

  • The belief that men are biologically inclined to be more aggressive and oppressive is false.
  • Men do not need to repress a instinct to be aggressive because it doesn’t exist.
  • They are taught from an early age to repress all emotions except for anger which leads to violent outbursts.
  • Toxic masculinity upholds this repression leading to many men not knowing how to communicate clearly and to associate women with emotions they deem “inferior”.

we been know

“Toxic masculinity is learned behavior and the teaching of it is systematic and unhealthy.”

In other news, water is wet.

Its still important to have the research to back it up.

I get that tumblr likes to believe it’s the Most Progressive Place Ever and Knows All These Things And Always Has but ya’ll gotta understand how important research is in a socio-cultural context. Without research, actual hard work, time and rigourous testing of a hypothesis to determine its validity, reliability and generalisability, what you have with something like Toxic Masculinity is a “commonly held belief”. That’s it. Without research everything is an opinion and a supposition. Nothing more.

Research is paramount to affecting politics, legislation, regulations, social behaviours and media representations because, if there’s researching saying “women are statistically more likely to be paid less” or “men are socially conditioned to be aggressive” then it’s harder to refute or dismiss our claims and opinions which correspond with such research.

So yes, whilst we all have Known™ that toxic masculinity is what honestly makes men so abusive, aggressive and limited communicatively, you have to remember that without research backing all this Knowledge up, then it’s basically viewed as a group of random people screaming about something No One Else Really Cares About Or Believes.

Experiential knowledge, that stuff we know through experience, is often considered lesser than knowledge arising from science and medicine. Why? Because we’ve alloted a heck lot more respect and acceptance to scientific knowledge for the last four hundred years since Galileo decided to tell the world we’re not the centre of the universe and got burnt for it. Maybe in time our experiential knowledge will be respected more and, honestly, I do believe it should, but right now, unless you got stats and scientific methodology to back up what you say, the world at large don’t give much of a shit beyond the space you’ve carved with people who think like you.

Time to punch anyone who says “men will be men”

Science, testing, and all that is important.
