happy PRIDE i’m here i’m queer and i believe the land should be given back to the proper indigenous stewards.

Non-Natives reblogging this are great and wonderful

Please remember that "land back" does not mean "indigenous people are mystical elves with innate epigenetic wisdom of land stewardship and they don't belong in big cities," nor does it mean "non-indigenous people can't be farmers." What it DOES mean is that "non-indigenous farmers should be paying the equivalent of property taxes to the native governments their land was stolen from." It means, "there's a great deal of indigenous scholarship on sustainable agricultural practices that farmers should be taking into account, because indigenous agriculture was more advanced than European agriculture at the time Europe invaded the Americas and western agriculture *still* hasn't caught up in terms of figuring out how to produce equivalently high crop yields without compromising the ecosystem." It means, "non-indigenous farmers should be in an intellectual discourse with indigenous agricultural scientists and indigenous peoples that still do traditional farming, figuring how to repair the damage western farming practices have done to the ecosystem."

It also means that indigenous peoples should regain the right to sustain themselves on the land according to the practices they want, and they should have free reign to perform their cultural practices and protect their holy sites, as opposed to the current model where if they try to honor their dead on public lands they get violently removed.

All ill say if the us supreme court decides to turn over the indian child welfare act and i don't see white people talking about it, especially white lgbt people, i will be pissed

Putting this on my account so it reaches my audience. I don't know what this is or what's happening but if I can spread awareness for those who need it, I'll happily talk about it.

So the ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act) basically prevents the removal of Native American children from their homes, which essentially removes them completely from their culture and whitewashes them. Obviously, that’s not very good, which is why the tribes fought to get the bill instated and now people are trying to remove it, which is why it’s going to the SCOTUS. Which is why that link above is very helpful!

Learning this was an intentional genocide changed me.

I know most of those following me know this, but just to make it super clear. An Gorta Mór (The Great Hunger/the Great Famine) was a deliberate genocide of the Irish people. There was enough food grown in Ireland to make sure everyone was alive and healthy and survived. Instead it was exported, sent to England and elsewhere for profit while men, women, and children starved in the streets. While the English landlords fucked off and evicted starving families who couldn’t afford rent. While babies were too weak to cry and died at the side of the road.

They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. And we owe so much thanks to the other oppressed peoples, in particular the Choctaw Nation and the Masai, who sent money and grain to us.

Let me repeat that. The Choctaw Nation who had just gone through the Trail of Tears sent us money to try save Irish lives. It’s led to an understanding between Irish people and Native American tribes, most recently when we donated to the Navajo and Hopi fundraisers for COVID-19 relief, because while it may be a different tribe, Irish people will never forget those who helped us and we’ll help back.

The entire population of the island is less than seven million people. We’re still a million less on this island than pre famine. And it’s not that long ago. My grandmother’s grandparents lived through it. We’ve told the stories, it literally changed the DNA of the country. We have a national fear of renting, because so many people were evicted. People joke about Irish people always offering loads of food, but it’s because there’s that cultural memory of not being able to.

They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. We will not let them take our lives, we will not let them take our language. We lost so much, but we will not lose it all.

This is why I get so angry when people say “it was the potato famine, it was because of monoculture/microbes.”

Nope. The potatoes were the only thing Irish people were allowed to fucking eat, because as pointed out, the rest of the crops they were growing were for their landlords to ship to England. So when the one “worthless” crop they were allowed to eat rotted in the field, the English crown, empire, landlords, all shrugged and carried on. People starved to death lying next to productive fields.

indigenous terminology in north america

it’s indigenous peoples’ day in the usa! to celebrate i am here to help non-indigenous folks in north america to think about the terminology they use because i know not all of y'all know how the nuances of the many things we’re called. in general, when talking about an indigenous person or character and referring to their indigeneity, referring to their specific culture is the best option. i am indigenous, but more specifically i am cree. that said, let’s talk about terminology while recognizing that the following list is super simplified to give you a brief overview.

indigenous is an umbrella term that refers to the original inhabitants of a land. it is used to talk about indigenous people worldwide. we use it as a collective term because we share many interests, but we are all different peoples and nations. people who are māori or sámi or ainu are all indigenous, but they’re all from very different places and cultures. indigenous as a term unites us, but shouldn’t be used to erase our differences.

aboriginal is, like indigenous, an umbrella term that refers to the original inhabitants of a land. aboriginal was a favoured term in canada for many years and is still used by some multi-nation organizations. canada’s indigenous peoples’ day (‪june 21‬) is also sometimes called aboriginal peoples’ day.

native american is a term that refers specifically to indigenous people living in what is currently the contiguous united states of america. people living in alaska or hawaii may prefer the term native hawaiian or native alaskan. if you call someone in canada native american they’ll know what you mean, but it’s not the preferred term. like indigenous, it is an umbrella term and covers many different tribes/nations. it is a term assigned to indigenous people and adopted by us, but not one we came up with ourselves.

native alaskan is an umbrella term that refers to indigenous people living in what is currently alaska. they are culturally distinct peoples from native american cultures. you may be used to calling native alaskans “esk*mos” and if you are you should stop that right fucking now because esk*mo is a derrogatory term that comes from cree slang. some native alaskan people are inuit (see below), but not all are.

native hawaiian is a term for indigenous hawaiians. this is another umbrella term. native hawaiians were not included in federal programs for native americans until the 70s and some programs still exclude them, as do many discussions about native american issues even though they are also an indigenous group colonized by the usa.

native is an umbrella term used by indigenous people to refer to themselves. in north america, it may be socially acceptable to refer to indigenous people as being native, but ymmv and elsewhere in the world, it carries more racist, colonial baggage than it does here, where it is generally understood as a shortened form of native american.

american indian is a dated term that is still used in some official spaces in the united states. older indigenous people may use this (or the term indian) because they’re used to saying it. if you’re not indigenous, you should probably say native american or indigenous. amerindian is a portmanteau of this term and similarly isn’t really favoured anymore.

indian is a dated term for indigenous people in canada and the united states. it stems from the time of christopher columbus when columbus decided to call us “indian”. if you are non-indigenous, do not refer to indigenous people as indian. in canada, it is also a legal designation tied to the indian act that means some indigenous people hold “indian status,” which grants them certain rights. some indigenous people in north america have reclaimed the term indian to refer to themselves.

ndn is a slang term we use to refer to ourselves online. if you’re non-indigenous then bro. do not. it just stands for indian, you can’t!

first nations is a term analogous to native american. it is used in canada to refer to the many indigenous nations south of the arctic circle. as someone who is cree, i’m first nations. it is an umbrella term, but not every indigenous person in canada is first nations. unlike “indian”, it is not a legal term.

inuit is the term for indigenous peoples that live in what is currently canada’s north. some indigenous people in alaska (and elsewhere) may also identify as inuit because the american/canadian border is a new addition in the grand scope of their histories. inuit are culturally distinct from first nations/native americans. also inuit means “the people” and y'all my inuk friend is so fucking amused every time someone says “the inuit people” because y'all are out here saying “the the people people.” not all indigenous people in the north are inuit.

métis is a term for people who are descended from specific communities where indigenous people and non-indigenous settlers intermarried and created their own culture. they are specific, cultural communities within canada with their own culture and language. not everyone with mixed indigenous and settler ancestry is métis. for example, my dad is white and my mom is cree. i am not métis because i don’t have any connection to a historic métis community. again, this is not a legal term the way indian is.

redsk*n is a derogatory term for native american/first nations people. the term originates from the genocide of our peoples, tied with the practice of collecting bounties for the scalps (the “red skins” in question) or other body parts of indigenous people in the west. do not use the term. even if you’re talking about the football team that recently changed its name, say “the washington team” or something similar. it’s a slur. (source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/a-brief-history-of-the-word-redskin-and-how-it-became-a-source-of-controversy/2016/05/19/062cd618-187f-11e6-9e16-2e5a123aac62_story.html)

esk*mo is another slur. it’s an anglicized version of askipiw, a cree word which is more or less saying that inuit eat raw meat (i.e. that is implying they’re more akin to animals than people). again, even when you’re referring to sports teams that use the term in their name, don’t say it. it doesn’t matter what some white dude on QI told you, it’s not a “more acceptable” umbrella term for northern indigenous peoples. some people might use it to refer to themselves still, but, as with other terminology on this list, if you’re not indigenous, don’t say it!

Some stuff from an Inupiaq perspective:

Alaskan Inuit are called Inupiat (often spelled Iñupiat but not always, the singular version of the word is spelled with a “Q” instead of a “T” at the end). It’s not really offensive to say “Alaskan Inuit” but “Inupiat” is faster and more accurate and what we actually call ourselves and we won’t laugh at you for it.

The Inuit are very culturally diverse. Inuit in Eastern Canada and Inupiat are not the same and are not guaranteed to share any specific traditions (there are even dances specific to King Island, one of the smallest Inupiat villages, where my family’s from). Saying “it’s an Inuit tradition” may not be as specific as you think it is.

“Circumpolar peoples” would be a more accurate politically correct term to replace “Eskimos” than “Inuit” because the Inuit are not the only group to be called Eskimos. Also take a moment before accusing someone of racism or insensitivity if they use the term. I’ve gotten more than my fair share of nalauģmiu “you shouldn’t be saying that” comments because no one bothered to ask if I was Inupiaq, Inuk, or Yup'ik. And I learned it from my Inupiat family before I even had white teachers.

“Alaska Native” is a lot more commonly used than “Native Alaskan” so odds are you’ll hear that term used more or used interchangeably.

A friend of mine posted this and tagged my old instagram account, asking me to share it. I figured sharing it here where I actually have a following, would be far better.

Please remember that just because the government is giving into pressure and greed, that doesn’t mean that any of this is getting any better, in a lot of ways it’s getting worse. And even if you yourself aren’t being as heavily affected anymore, there are people and communities that are.

Stay safe Darling ones, and help others remain safe too.

Imperialism kills.

They stole the land and killed the children.

So this is actually really heartbreaking. Add it to the list of things they (the American Educational System) never teach you about American History.

It's definitely worth looking into because it's really trickled down to what the education system is today.

Brief intro from what I know: These colonizers would find indigenous families wherever there land was. They'd infiltrate and take away the children under the promise of free education. Sometimes they made it seem like it was a choice and the children were able to come home whenever they wanted but parents weren't allowed to visit.

In these schools, indigenous children would be forced to cut their hair and basically wash off anything that resembled their culture and traditions. The academia was brainwashing these children to conform into behaving like "true Americans". They were taught the ways of their people was "bad" and "uncivilized". Schools would also make it a point to change each child's name to something more westernized and "acceptable".

A lot of these tribes were eventually dismantled and most of the children did not return home either because they were forced to abandon their families and adapt into western civilization or they disappeared without a trace.

It's silly to assume finding bodies of the lost and stolen would bring peace .. but it finally gives answers to those who have been searching for their loved ones.

Please spread awareness whenever you can.

Omg thank you so much for this. It really brings tears to my eyes when I research what white people did to the natives of the Americas from day 1 to present. But it really becomes apparent how they were viewed as LESS than less than human. These schools that are somehow just now being discovered do not even touch on the atrocities these people have been facing for centuries. I implore everybody to research the true history of thanksgiving (because they won’t teach about it. CRT things) And if that doesn’t radicalize you, then you need to have a very very very serious conversation with yourself or somebody on why that is.

My grandma was stolen and taken to one of these institutions. Her stories were heart wrenching 💔

No words.

My only question is, why didn't they find them sooner?

Went to the Aboriginal artifact exhibit in Chicago. And it’s interesting. How many blankets and masks and totem poles say ‘unknown source’, because every five seconds my mom would stop and point to something and say. “Pauline’s grandmother made that,” or, “That belongs to Mike’s family, I should call him” because. It’s all stolen

“These artifacts were excavated by archaeologists from a burial site in the 1970’s. The remains were returned for reinterment” Okay cool, cool cool. So you just, like. Dug up the grave of a respected family member, stripped them naked, mailed their body back to their family and kept everything they were lovingly put to rest in. Like a graverobbing bastard

Reminds me of the time when of the elders from my hometown started touching a totem pole in the Museum of Anthropology out at UBC and got yelled at by the staff, only to tell him that the pole had been stolen off of the front of her bighouse when she was ten years old.

Museum collectors did the equivalent of kidnapping a family member when they were away fishing.

All of that effort for nothing…it’s a damn shame and it’s heartbreaking.

What if Earth is already the property of some galactic empire that hasn’t gotten around to settling us yet because they just purchased us off of another galactic empire a few decades ago?

What if the leaders of said empire tells its citizen to colonize Earth, and they start taking over our cities and land. They find it justifiable because we don’t use the elements in Earth’s core like they do so we don’t really own the planet.

We’re pushed to Mars, where only 1% of humanity lives in relative peace but a lot of hunger and a few international struggles, which the aliens feed into. They eventually settle Mars too, pushing us to the moons of Jupiter, then Saturn.

Eventually the empire becomes a bit nicer, and builds us a bunch of reservations throughout the solar system, though only a few of them are on Earth. Today we’re a minority in our own Solar System, mostly running Casinos on Mars or giving tours of the ruins of our once great cities. The aliens stopped calling us Meatbags though. Now they use the more respectable Native-Earthling term, though they’ll rarely acknowledge whatever nationality your ancestors had before they came.

The message of this gets over the head of a lot of people and it’s making me kinda sad.

They do, however, have an Arcturan Mega-Football team called the Meatbags which they refuse to change, because they’re “honouring us”

And even though they say they like us, respect us, and see us as legal equals, humans have a far worse quality of life than the aliens no matter what planet their reservation is on. Fresh, clean water is hard to come by despite it being a right afforded to all aliens. Housing is mouldy. Government supported healthcare almost non existent. Very few ships to take us out of our reservations so we’re stuck, literally trapped, in squalor. And when we bring it up to the aliens we’re blatantly ignored.

Now young humans are committing suicide at an epidemic rate and the aliens are just scratching their heads in mock confusion. They also want to build a huge pipeline to suck out Earth’s core which has a high chance of destroying Earth. The aliens deny this. We protest and use every legal right afforded but the plans push on. The aliens lie and say it was all done legally when it’s obvious that’s not true. One human reservation on Earth wants in on the pipeline money to help get them out of alien-induced squalor. The aliens prop them up as the only human voice and use it to silence the rest of us.

We say, “You will destroy the only home we know.”

“Why are you deligitimizing the voices of humans who want this?” The alien leader replies with tears in his eyes, feeling victimized. The other aliens near him clap and praise his empathy. But aliens who want to usurp his power hate him for his supposed empathy, which is all the more startling as we can obviously see there’s very little real human empathy in either alien parties.

(The alien leader’s name is Djuz-din Tr00do)

And the aliens and humans are biologically the same species, evolved on the same planet they both emigrated from. And the aliens claim they were first to colonize Earth anyways.

apparently native american tribes were in contact with the donner party and offered them food when they saw the colonists were starving and the donner party turned them down and decided to go the whole “cannibalism” route instead.

Until now the Native American perspective has been left out of the telling of the Donner tragedy, not because the wel mel ti did not remember the pioneers, but because they were never asked, or perhaps were not ready to share. Their oral tradition recalls the starving strangers who camped in an area that was unsuitable for that time of year. Taking pity on the pioneers, the northern Washoe attempted to feed them, leaving rabbit meat and wild potatoes near the camps. Another account states that they tried to bring the Donner Party a deer carcass, but were shot at as they approached. Later, some wel mel ti observed the migrants eating human remains. Fearing for their lives, the area’s native inhabitants continued to watch the strangers but avoided further contact. These stories, and the archaeological evidence that appears to support them, certainly complicated my interpretation of the Donner Party event. The migrants at Alder Creek were not surviving in the mountains alone—the northern Washoe were there, and they had tried to help.  (source)

tfw a group of unprepared strangers show up, refuse the food you offer them, start fucking cannibalizing each other, and then call you the savages

I watched a video about how Don't Starve is about western colonialism, and they talked about cannibalism being a good metaphor and deeply connected with colonialism, seeing other people as food for the empire.

These people were so full of themselves, they filled themselves with themselves.

Time Lapse of the Land Taken From Native Americans

via reddit

I will reblog this EVERY GODDAMN TIME so people can understand how the US government taking more and more land from Natives is nothing new (even the land originally promised after being kicked off their original, sacred lands) and they NEED to be fucking stopped. They need to be held accountable for the destruction of our people not just then but also now.

and the land left to us is still disrespected constantly, ever-shrinking, trespassed upon, and denied support 💁‍♀️

This whole thing is fucking disgusting, but I think the worst thing is the last frame- when it jumps from a few big preservstions to essentially none...
