Still on my soapbox about how the cancellation of queer shows is tantamount to book bans. While 1 in 4 queer-inclusive shows are cancelled after only one season, the average streaming cancellation rate is only 12% (including shows with more than one season). It's part of the anti-LGBT sentiment sweeping the nation. This isn't a new phenomenon, but its impact is becoming more and more important.

When queer shows are cancelled, it sends the message that our stories are not valuable, are not wanted. It also steals away representation which not only normalizes queer people for straight audiences, but also allows queer people to feel seen and affirmed.

Queer folks still have dire mental health outcomes. It gets worse as more anti-LGBT laws are passed. There are mountains of evidence that representation improves mental health for and cultural attitudes towards queer people.

🌈 If you want to help, you can start by streaming the hell out of queer series on any platform. Get your friends and family in on it. Heartstopper, Dead Boy Detectives, and Our Flag Means Death are a solid place to start.

You can sign DBDA's petition, fill out Netflix's request form with specific queer shows you want renewed (once per day per device), and rate your favorite queer shows and episodes on IMDB. If you're on Twitter, check out the #CanceledByNetflix tag and the account @CancelNetflix. You can tweet at or message your preferred streaming platforms on most social media too (Facebook, Tiktok, Insta, Twitter, Tumblr).

And spread the word :) Our stories deserve to be told.

One interesting thing that can happen in long running media is that the general cultural background can shift under the work, recontextualizing it as it is being written. I'm specifically thinking of the Order of the Stick, a Dungeons and Dragons themed webcomic that started in 2003 with the titular party of adventurers going through a dungeon.

From left to right, we have Belkar Bitterleaf the halfling ranger, Vaarsuvius the Elf Wizard, Elan the Human Bard, Haley Starshine the Human Rogue, Durkon Thundershield the Dwarf Cleric, and Roy Greenhilt the Human Fighter. The comic takes place in a fantasy setting that knowingly runs off the rules of Dungeons and Dragons third edition. Characters talk about rolls and bonuses and intentionally take levels in various classes. At the start, the comic was a pretty basic gag comic about the D&D rules, basic fantasy/adventure tropes, ect.

In the 20 years the comic has been running, it has updated about 1300 times, not counting bonus strips exclusively made for the printed version, and several print (or PDF) only side and prequel stories. It has also dramatically grown from it's roots, the art has improved while keeping the same general aesthetic, and the gag-a-day comic has become a sweeping fantasy epic. The characters have grown beyond their initial bits (Belkar is a Murderhobo, Elan is stupid, Haley is greedy, ect), and it's genuinely up there as one of my favorite stories. But anyway, let's talk about Vaarsuvius. If you look at the above art, You'll notice that the characters tend to have three types of body shapes: Rectangles for Roy, Belkar, and Elan, feminine curves for Haley, and Robes for Vaarsuvius. This presentation is a pretty consistent signifier of gender and/or somebody wearing robes. Early on, part of Vaarsuvius's running gag became their ambiguous gender. At the time, it was a fairly common joke in fantasy to talk about how Elven men had androgynous or "Girly" appearances, so V was part of that. Instead of a singular pronoun, characters would generally just abbreviate Vaarsuvius's name as "V", and whenever the narrative would have naturally provided some indication of gender one way or another, V would resolve the situation without providing any such indication. For example, an early gag has the characters seeking out a set of modern style bathrooms in the dungeon. When they find them, V says that their "More Efficient elven biology" means they don't have to go yet, so they wait outside while the boys go into the Men's room and Haley waits in the inevitable long line at the women's. When Vaarsuvius reveals that they are married, they use the term "Spouse" to refer to their partner, when we see their children, the children are clearly adopted (V and their partner both have pale skin, their children have darker skin) and refer to Vaarsuvius as "Parent". Vaarsuvius themselves seems to have trouble identifying other people by gender. Characters outside the central cast might refer to Vaarsuvius as "He" or "She", but doing so was always shedding light on that character's perspective, rather than saying anything about Vaarsuvius. The assumption behind the gag is that Vaarsuvius must be either male or female, and the joke is that the narrative/Vaarsuvius themselves keeps finding ways to avoid "Revealing" their gender. Fan wikis and official books list Vaarsuvius's gender as "Ambigious" and on the forum there used to be a regular, multi-part thread dedicated to debatings Vaarsuvius's gender, even after the author declared that it would "never be revealed".

Anyway, going back to the start, it's 2023, and something shifted at some point, both in the comic and in the general cultural background. The jokes about V's gender kind of fell off, not just because the gag got played out, but because the basic assumption behind it simply doesn't work anymore. Everybody knows that Nonbinary people exist. There's no point in the comic where Vaarsuvius switches from being "Ambigiously Gendered" to Nonbinary, in fact, the entire comic reads just fine if you read Vaarsuvius as male or female and just not caring enough to clarify their gender to anybody and at some point other characters just stop thinking about it. But it's interesting to see how a character trait that was once included in even the most basic character descriptions (Varsuvius: Elven Wizard. Arrogant, Intelligent. Ambigiously gendered) just kind of got washed away by a rising tide of cultural nuance towards gender. Also go read OOTS, it's pretty great.

Yesterday — April 7, 2022 —, Alabama passed a bill making gender-affirming health care a felony for people up to age 19. This means that trans youth who seek gender-affirming medical care, their supportive parents, and their doctors all may face criminal charges for the care that is supported by every major medical organization in the U.S.

This is the third state to pass this felony ban on trans care.

On the same day, Alabama passed another bill banning trans youth from gendered public spaces (like bathrooms), and a third bill banning any discussion of LGBTQ+ topics in schools.

Half of all U.S states are moving these exact same bills through their legislatures at lightning speeds, including my home state where I transitioned as a minor.

I have only seen outrage about Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill (which affects trans people, too, by the way). Please also keep track of what is happening to trans people at the state level in the U.S. We are being banned from public life and life-saving medical care. These are children. Lives depend on us challenging these bills.

does anyone know the other states who have passed this bill?

Texas is an honorable mention because, although banning trans medical care is not a state law, the governor has directed the families, doctors, and teachers of trans minors to report them to the state on counts of child abuse and separate them from their families.

States that have banned trans children from playing school sports are: MT, ID, SD, IA, WV, UT, AZ, TX, OK, AR, TN, MS, AL, and FL.

States that have banned any mention of LGBTQ+ topics in public schools are: MT, AZ, OK, TX, LA, MS, AR, TN, AL, and FL.

These have all happened in the last year with little to no media coverage or cis outrage. The states with Republican-dominated legislatures that haven’t yet passed all three of these bills will continue to propose them every single legislative session until they pass.

Please, please pay attention.

one of my favourite ever lion studies was looking at masculinized females in botswana, and one of the study lionesses was called SaF05

SaF05 had a mostly complete light mane, mated with both males and females, roared and scent-marked in a fashion associated with males, however acted socially as a female when it came to hunting and patrolling

revolutionary

Did they name the lion Sapho on purpose?

Yes. Just, having known a number of scientists, yes, they 100% created a naming system that would allow them to call the lionesses “Sappho 1-9″. And if they ended up somehow with more than 9, even if the designation would’ve been SaF10+, they almost certainly would’ve been called “Sappho Ten” and so on.

Scientists are huuuuuuge nerds. If you ever think something in science is a reference to something, 99% of the time you will be right, the nerdier the better.

Current Mood: Crying While Watching Blue’s Clues Pride Song

It’s sung to the tune of The Ants Go Marching One By One song!!!

Another reason why Blues Clues and You is like the best reboot ever

some highlights from the notes 💖

Stop.

Oh, my god. I’m already crying with asexuality included.

Now you’re telling me other groups feel the same way?

There’s legit tears down my face.

-fae

The more you look at it the more you love it.

The drag queen is holding a BLM sign.

There’s a Hijabi on the all races float (and if you look closely at the flag, I think the owl is indigenous).

One of the babas is disabled.

They could have just stopped at including all the flags.

But no. They said “I don’t care if they’re animals. I’m going to make it very clear we’re including all races and disabled people.”

And it’s such small details, but they’re there.

-fae

Found 2 more hidden BLM flags.

And I consider myself pretty versed in queer identities, but even I don’t know what some of these flags are.

Which really shows that you’ve never had the opportunity to feel validated like this, and that makes me love it even more.

-fae

I already made my own post about this as well, but it seems like a good idea to add the info on this post too, since it’s really taken off. There are (at least) 30 different flags plus assorted other representation. They include:

Pride, Progress Pride, BLM Progress Pride, Lesbian, Gay Man

Trans, Nonbinary — Dolphin wheelchair user, Top surgery beaver

Gender Queer, Genderfluid, Intersex Demigender, Demiboy, Demigirl, Bisexual, Pansexual, Asexual, Demisexual, Gray Asexual, Aromantic — Blind bird

Bigender, Genderflux, Omnisexual, Neutrois, Maverique, Pangender, Drag — llama(?) with prosthetic leg

Trigender, Ally, Two-Spirit, and Gender Questioning — Hijabi owl and Native American owl

I’m so fucking happy for the LGBTQ+ kids that have things like this to let them know they’re valid

This much representation including stuff I’ve never fucking seen before

and in a KIDS show, like that’s insane, people will finally grow up knowing it’s ok to exist

Blues clues did their research, said LGBTQ+ rights and fucking meant it bruh

When you think of intersex and trans liberation, think of it as a venn diagram.

There’s quite a bit of overlap, but our struggles aren’t all inherently the same, and it’s disingenuous to both groups to imply that our struggles are absolutely the same. Our interests are hand in hand, like the interests of intersex people and disabled people.

Cis intersex people still wield transphobia and transmisogyny. There are cis intersex TERFs that co-op intersex activism for their own transmisogyny and trans-extermination.

Dyadic trans people still wield intersexism. These thoughts that you can transition to intersex/get “intersex genitalia”, that we are “lucky” to face medical abuse and neglect if we’re intersex and trans because we got a “jump start”, these are lateral aggressors between the trans and intersex community.

But again, there is overlap. Trans intersex people are here and we experience both extremes, plus that overlap between the communities. We all strive for liberation from sex as a binary and a class.

I think it’s important for us to acknowledge and create the solidarity between our communities while realizing that we have similar and differing goals. An example being HRT. Going on HRT for your wellbeing as a trans person isn’t the same as being forced on HRT as an intersex person. Our medical abuse and neglect look different. And that’s okay!

That’s why we have solidarity with our trans comrades as intersex people. We uplift intersex trans voices in both communities to show that overlap and we work together while acknowledging that being trans and being intersex are different experiences, under different umbrellas of oppression, and that’s okay.

YES! YES! THIS IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT!

Please enjoy my observations of the last few weeks, as an agender person capable of believably passing as both male and female, of all the subtle and unconscious ways people respond to men versus women:

  1. When I present as female, I hear: “Sorry, I’m getting pretty technical now.” from men pretty often when they’re explaining something to me. I’ve never, ever heard it when I present as male.
  2. When I present as male, women will thank me for the most basic cornerstones of courtesy as if I’ve singlehandedly solved all their problems for them. Believe me, I’m only barely exaggerating. As a single example, the other day I was walking down a narrow footpath and came across two older women who were struggling a bit and needed a lot of space, so I stepped off the footpath to give them room. Both of them smiled hugely at me and said “Thank you, thank you so much!!” in tones of such relieved gratitude that I was grinning for the rest of my walk. I never get anything like this when I present as female – the most I’ll get is a smile.
  3. Men give way to me when I’m presenting as male. I have yet to see one give way to me when I present as female.
  4. This one blew my mind a little: men have different smiles for women than they do for men. I don’t think that’s conscious or deliberate, but it’s pervasive enough that I keep noticing it. I’m not even sure I have the right words for it, but here goes: when I present as male, men tend to either avoid making eye contact with me, or they’ll nod and give me a small friendly smile. When I present as female, men nearly always make eye contact with me, and their smiles are bigger, less authentic, and last longer. They’re more, for lack of any better descriptor, performative. This is a reliable enough measure that if I somehow forgot what clothes I was wearing when I left home, I could tell you based on peoples’ smiles alone.
  5. Occasionally I’m androgynous enough that people visibly struggle with whether to say ‘sir’ or ‘ma’am’ to get my attention. The most common thing people do is default to something gender-neutral, like ‘excuse me’. But sometimes people guess, and the guess is always, always ‘sir’. I’ve never heard anyone go “Excuse me, uh…. ma’am…?” My guess here is that men are generally more outraged at being mistaken for a woman than women are at being mistaken for a man.
  6. I’ve been catcalled and whistled at when I present as female. Not often, but it’s happened. Once, I walked by a group of laughing men who went: “Hey! Give us a smile!” and it completely ruined the rest of my day. Probably goes without saying, but I’ve never gotten anything like that when I present as male.
  7. When I buy heavy things at a store while presenting as female, I’m asked every time if I’d like help carrying it out to the car. No one asks me that when I present as male. (And it’s not like my physical build or my carrying technique changes – I’m tall, and stocky, and I lift things like someone who’s been trained in heavy-duty weightlifting, because, you know. I have!)

Probably I’ll have more of these observations in a couple months’ time, who knows. It’s been absolutely fascinating noticing these things though!

Living as a shapeshifter really lets you see many points of view, huh.

3 years ago, I transferred schools, and thought it would be the perfect occasion to start using my new name. Everyone knows me as Ira now. At the time, I was mostly presenting as male or male-adjacent, and since in Poland only female names end with "-a", I had to explain that it was a shortening, or a nickname, or, to people I was comfortable with, that it was gender-neutral.

For really the first time in my life, I had a blank slate, and I could be perceived as male. Some people, after a year and a half, have told me that they thought I was a cis guy, hah. It was exciting. Guys interacted differently with me. I made a few friends from the class down, one of them a trans guy, and one a cis awkward boy.

When the latter finally found out I wasn't a cis male, he suddenly... Got awkward around me. Avoided eye contact. Talked less. I'm not sure if he was intimidated, or what, but it made me sad. He was a nice dude.

I have been thinking about the importance of being non-judgmental towards people who change their labels, whatever those labels are.

Found out you weren’t autistic but actually schizophrenic? Thought you were ace and aro but you were just a late bloomer? Tried out new pronouns and a new name, but eventually learns that you are cool with your assigned gender? Thought you were gay, but then one day you also fell in love with someone of another gender?

….And so on and so forth.

We NEED to normalize this shit. No one should feel like they need to uproot their whole identity and move to a new blog because their label changed. No one should be shamed for getting that one step closer to figuring themselves out - even if that step is a step towards the “norm”, we need to celebrate the bravery and strength it takes to come out again and again and again.

I’m 28, and I’m STILL unclear on where I am on the ace and aro spectrum, if I’m even there at all. If you’d asked me 6 years ago, I would have told you I’m a monogamous, neurotypical, cis “bicurious” girl despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. I can’t stand to think where I would be today, if I hadn’t been allowed to question this image.

Please, read my message.

My name is Oliwia. I am 17 years old and I come from Poland. And you know what? I'm fucking scared for my life. I am terrified for the lives of others. You probably heard about what happened last year in my country. "LGBT free zone" stickers, massive beatings in the city of Białystok at the pride parade.

This year is even worse. But not only for the LGBTQ+ people.

People are scared to go out and be themselves. Because if they show their true identity, they will be in massive danger.

PIS „Law and Justice” (the political party that rules our country at the moment) considers the removal of one of the legal abortion laws. We’re talking about a situation when the fetus is badly damaged. Very clever of them if we look at the fact that it is almost 98 percent of legal abortions in Poland. X

The leader of the anti-abortion initiative, Kaja Godek, argued during the parliamentary debate that the defense of life is enshrined in the constitution and described any abortion as “torture.”

“Abortion is a pandemic that is far worse than the coronavirus,” Godek said. “It produces more victims and all of them die.” X

There is also very “nice” clip of her saying “Lesbians, gays and other perverts, stay away from Poland.” She also fights to ban all pride parades across the whole country. X

If that didn’t convince you yet, how fucked up the situation was, how about criminalisation of sexual education? Yeah..I know..

PIS is trying to make a law where you can go to jail for even 3 years for teaching children about sex and other important stuff they have to understand at some point in their life.

“The proposed change will provide legal protection for children and young people against sexual depravity and demoralization, which is developing at a dangerous pace and affects thousands of the youngest Poles through the so-called sex education. Responsible for "sex education" of the environment enter other educational institutions in Poland, awakening children sexually and promoting homosexuality, masturbation and other sexual activities among students.” X

You want more? Okay. What about a boy named Jan from Jordan who has posted a modification of the emblem on Facebook, adding LGBT rainbow colors in the background. He’s 16. “I wanted to show that it is worth loving and respecting each other without prejudice" The case was reported to the Police. They arrested him and told him he has to say sorry for what he’s done and threatened him that they’ll send him to a correctional institution. X

People here are scared, I am scared. I don’t have the power to do anything yet because I’m just a kid in the eyes of adults. And you may ask “what can I do?”

And all I’m asking for is this:

Please be loud and stay proud of yourself. Talk about the situation in Poland. Talk about how fucked up this is. We can’t let PIS just get away with all of this. Not again. Please. I’m literally begging you. I love you all so much, I don’t want to be silenced and be afraid to go outside. I don’t want the history to repeat itself.

I’m tagging some of the pretty popular and trustworthy accounts, if you can, please reblog this and please don’t give up.

op, do you have any links to lgbt organizations in poland that people could donate to? i found some by googling around but bc i don’t have any firsthand knowledge i don’t want to thoughtlessly link some and then find out they’re known to be shitty (peta, susan g komen, etc). if you know of any that you trust or that you’ve seen doing meaningful work on the ground and can add them i’d be happy to reblog again so those w the ability can donate

So I've been reading up on this in the last half hour, and it's extremely dire. The party is pushing a bill that would classify any attempts at teaching students sex Ed, especially through a lens that includes the LGBT+ community, as paedophilia.

Large swaths of the country have been declared "free of LGBT propaganda."

Judges are defending hate groups as they actively and aggressively campaign against the rights of the LGBT+ community in the streets.

Additionally, there is age-old vitriolic hate against refugees only gaining strength.

I tried looking into organizations which directly deal with these crises in Poland specifically, but I've had no luck.

If anyone has more information on that, sound off please.

Meanwhile, I think it's important that people know about and are talking about this.

Thank you for your concern!

Main organisation that fights against homophobia in Poland is Kampania Przeciw Homofobii (Campaign against homophobia): their paypal

Some other organisations that help LGBT+ people in Poland:

Miłość nie wyklucza (Love Does Not Exclude) - fight for marriage equality

Trans-fuzja - helps trans people

Lambda - provides psychological help for LGBT+ people (the site is only in Polish but the link leads to the donation page)

Oganisations that help refugees in Poland:

Halina Nieć Legal Aid Center - offers legal advice to people in search of asylum

also consider signing this petition protesting against making abortion illegal

Ponton - organisation focused on sex education (that is if it doesn't become illegal)

those are all of the organisations I can think of now. Please consider donating, even one dollar means a lot! Thank you!

Thank you for these resources!!!!

Jesus fuck damnit... I am so glad that I’ll be getting out of this forsaken country soon. But all my friends who will stay here... All the people who will suffer because of it... I will still try to fight for them however I can. I can’t do much right now.

I chose Ira and Erin/Arin simultaneously, but realized the former is only androgynous in speech. I still go by Ira. I like its meaning and sound. The funniest thing is that my first friend from preschool, (whom I renewed contact with a few months ago), called me that, and I hated it. Now I want everyone to call me that.
