apparently native american tribes were in contact with the donner party and offered them food when they saw the colonists were starving and the donner party turned them down and decided to go the whole “cannibalism” route instead.

Until now the Native American perspective has been left out of the telling of the Donner tragedy, not because the wel mel ti did not remember the pioneers, but because they were never asked, or perhaps were not ready to share. Their oral tradition recalls the starving strangers who camped in an area that was unsuitable for that time of year. Taking pity on the pioneers, the northern Washoe attempted to feed them, leaving rabbit meat and wild potatoes near the camps. Another account states that they tried to bring the Donner Party a deer carcass, but were shot at as they approached. Later, some wel mel ti observed the migrants eating human remains. Fearing for their lives, the area’s native inhabitants continued to watch the strangers but avoided further contact. These stories, and the archaeological evidence that appears to support them, certainly complicated my interpretation of the Donner Party event. The migrants at Alder Creek were not surviving in the mountains alone—the northern Washoe were there, and they had tried to help.  (source)

tfw a group of unprepared strangers show up, refuse the food you offer them, start fucking cannibalizing each other, and then call you the savages

I watched a video about how Don't Starve is about western colonialism, and they talked about cannibalism being a good metaphor and deeply connected with colonialism, seeing other people as food for the empire.

These people were so full of themselves, they filled themselves with themselves.

okay so, it seems like Wortox can’t? touch things? because there’s so many quotes of his, where he goes “be careful of my hands” or “i can’t pet you” and i’m wondering why?

is it because of the whole. eating souls things? he could definitely touch things before the whole Krampus thing, so it must be a new thing- so maybe he can like. steal souls by touch?

Yes, the curse is probably that he can’t touch anything without taking it’s soul, which is so cruel, seeming as he wants to pet everything. Also, I think his failed crafting quote is something like “I guess my hands really are cursed’. So yeah.

Change his quote to “touch-starved”, eh?

I just realized something

Perhaps it’s just common knowledge, but…

I already knew that Wilson’s name is probably a reference to Castaway Island, but I just realized something else: William Carter (Maxwell)  is possibly named that because of E.A.Poe’s William Wilson, where the main character has a doppelganger following him throughout his life and exposing his sins. He comes to hate the clone, and in the end, he kills it, but it turns out he also kills himself spiritually, because it was his conscience actually(?)…

Even if it’s not a reference (though why not? one of the crucial items in the game is a reference to Poe), I find it very fitting.
