Can you tell this dub was recorded in South Carolina, and in 1995?

Avatar

Allegedly, the Japanese producers enjoyed the English dub so much (especially of Natsumi), that when they recorded the TV series, they showed the English OVA dub to the Japanese actors in order to inspire their acting.

Coastal Carolina didn’t make many English dubs, but those they did make are a treat. Besides You’re Under Arrest, I also enjoy Shinesman and Elf Princess Rane. And many of the same personnel later reformed as another company and did the dub of Miami Guns.

I can’t believe I never realised before this exact moment that the very specific vocal characterisation that’s indelibly burned into the brains of an entire generation of English-speaking nerds as the 90s Anime Dub Voice™ is literally just a Carolina accent.

i don't know how you can "the curtains are just blue! ACAB lol" fucking Death Note of all pieces of media

this is a show for thirteen-year-old boys. the only writers I've seen who are less subtle about what they're going for were fucking Victorians.

@rawr-monster and @eyestumblin asked me to elaborate so here goes:

Death Note is a show with a very clear central premise: no one should have the power to kill others without consequence. Not the cops, not corporations, not the Mob, not civilians, no one.

Even outside of the 2000s-era criticisms of the Japanese justice system, even if you're looking at it in a vacuum, Death Note makes it incredibly obvious what it's trying to say. It starts this off by making it very clear, right out of the gate, that the audience identification character really, really should not have this power.

For Death Note's original target audience, Light is everything you're supposed to be. He's smart, diligent, good-looking, athletic, popular but not too popular. He's The Perfect Middle-Class Japanese Teenage Boy. If you're the kind of edgy, smart Japanese teenage boy who would want to watch an anime supernatural crime drama in the mid-00s? Light is built for you to imprint on like a baby duckling.

...And then the show goes out of its way to point out, in the first proper story arc, that Light is the villain of this piece. From the introduction of L to the end of the Raye Penber/Naomi Misora arc, the show makes it very, very clear that Light is a hypocrite with a massive ego. Sure, he says that he's only killing criminals to make a better world. Sure, maybe he panicked and killed fake-L in self-defense. Sure, maybe the life of Reye Penber and any law enforcement chasing Kira were worth the clear drop in the crime rate. Maybe.

But then Light kills one of the very few unambiguously Good members of the Death Note cast, does so in a smug and cruel way, and the entire scene is framed as tragic in a way that none of the criminal deaths really were. The whole world goes quiet. And Naomi Misora stumbles off to commit suicide. By the end of that arc, even if you'd otherwise be sympathetic to Light- even if you're still rooting for him to get away with it- it's a lot harder to justify what he's doing. He's not just breaking a few eggs to make an omelet- at this point, he's actively happy to kill anyone who gets in his way.

So. Okay. The Perfect Japanese Teenage Boy (TM) can't be trusted with the power to kill indiscriminately. Maybe the problem is just that Light, as a person, is an asshole with impure motives, and if you gave the Death Note to someone who's a better person, you'd be better off. Maybe you could find someone who's motivated by love, and they'd do a better job with that power.

Everyone, say hello to Misa Amane, who is utterly driven by love and devotion, and probably one of the crazier/more evil characters on the show! She'd do anything, no matter how terrible, just because Light told her to do it. She is utterly without remorse, utterly without fear, and utterly driven by a darkly Romantic fanaticism.

Light gets to dodge what's coming to him twice because of Misa and love- once because Misa's love for Light lets him start the Yotsuba arc, and once because Rem's love for Misa becomes a diabola ex machina. In the world of Death Note, love is not a pure enough motive to let you kill indiscriminately - in fact, it makes you worse.

Okay, well, (our hypothetical edgy teenage viewer might say), cLEARLY the problem is that everyone here is too emotional, and you need to be able to detach from the situation to use the power of life and death. Of course you'd kill indiscriminately if you've got feeeeelings about it, but someone who is driven by Logic and Reason? Surely they'd never do anything wrong.

...And then L gets his hands on the Death Note, and immediately starts trying to figure out how to use it to prove that some of the rules in the Death Note are fake and Light is guilty. L's plan is to have a criminal on death row write in the Death Note and wait the 13 days to see if he dies. It's simple. Logical. Effective. It's also extremely reminiscent of the stuff Kira's been doing this entire time, and the implication is that, had L lived longer and used the Note more, he might become No Different.

(I think it's significant that in The Movie, L uses the Death Note exactly once, with himself as the victim, and he turns down the Death Note when it's offered to him. TheMovie!L is an unambiguously heroic character, and therefore, he will not kill without consequences.)

The power to kill without any consequence to yourself corrupts you. It makes you want to use it to solve more and more of your problems. It turns you into a fucking monster, one name at a time. And nothing can stop that process except refusing to use that power. Love cannot shield you. Rationality cannot shield you. Justice cannot shield you.

And every other character who gets the Death Note reinforces that theme. The Yotsuba Group? Big corporations should not get to kill without consequences. Mello? Criminals/genius detectives should not get to kill without consequence. Mikami? The Perfect Japanese Adult is outright sadistic about how he uses the Death Note. And on, and on, and on.

Near outright tells Light, in their final confrontation: "You are a murderer, and this notebook is the worst weapon of mass murder in the world." Using the Death Note is not justice; it's not going to bring about a perfect new world. It's murder, full stop. Light has become a mass murderer, a monster, by killing over and over again.

Death Note has a theme: no one should be allowed to kill without consequences, because it makes you a monster. It is not subtle about that theme. It is very, very blatant, and the only way it could be more blatant is if Near stopped to deliver an Atlas-Shrugged-style monologue about it.

and so seeing people reduce that to 'haha ACAB' gets my goat, because no. No, it's not just ACAB. anyone with the power to kill indiscriminately and without consequence- whether it's a cop, a megacorp, an autistic supergenius, a mob boss, or a perfect audience-insert- would become A Bastard.

this is a show that makes it abundantly clear that there is Symbolism and it has a Point, in the way that only stuff aimed at teenagers that's trying to be Deep can do. how you get through the entirety of Death Note and walk away with "there's no point! a cop's son decides to be the worst person ever! Light is Uniquely Terrible and that's all there is to it!" is fucking beyond me.

I was just going to blithely reblog this, and then I thought of something.

There is a category unmentioned here in the 'people who use the death note' and that category is the Shinigami. Yes, Rem's mentioned in the 'things you do for love' situation, tho she's not the only one who uses the Death Note in a selfless way (even under manipulation).

Because Rem and Gelus both use the Death Note to save Misa, and they both DIE for doing so. And that's an important context here, the Shinigami, the people who are MEANT to use the Death Note, are near-immortal immoral monsters. And the one way for them to be killed? Is to use the Death Note to benefit someone else.

Not only is there no 'good' way to use a Death Note, it was never INTENDED to be used for 'good', just as a way to elongate the lifespans of actual literal monster people in another dimension.

Death Note goes out of it’s way to have characters just straight-up monologue several times about how it’s the power to kill that’s evil and that corrupts anyone who accepts it, that there’s no good way or good person to have power over life and death. They even put the Death Note in the hands of someone who refuses to use it either directly or by proxy (Light’s father) and he gets to die peacefully with the belief that his son was innocent and Ryuk straightup explains this to the audience just to make sure everyone gets it.

Oh…. Well, it’s over for Crunchyroll I guess

it gets worse: funi had an option to buy anime outright. but, it was bought digitally, and now CR has said that they're not going to honor that, so if you bought anything from funi digitally, CR are taking that away from you

This is absolutely insane but the part that I find funny is that there isn't a community on earth more dedicated to piracy than western anime fans. For ages the only way to even get your hands on anime and manga in the west was piracy. I literally don't think Crunchyroll could have picked a worse group to try the "we're a monopoly so we can charge you whatever we want" play on. I doubt there's a person over the age of 25 who saw that and thought anything other than "welp, okay, piracy it is then!" like honestly the Crunchyroll executives are out of their fucking minds with this one.

okay as someone witch a background in art and a degree in art history of you thinking of choosing art to study in college PLEASE watch the anime Blue Period because it really does hit on the struggles and misconceptions of learning art. That this is a field that should be taken as seriously as any other degree.

Let me tell you art isn't easy BUT anyone can learn how to do it otherwise there wouldn't be such a thing as an art school. with in the first episode they say it isn't about talent but rather about passion and how many times you are willing to try until you get it right

REBLOGING THIS AGAIN IF YOU LOVE ART AND/OR HAVE AN APPRECIATION FOR ART EVEN IF ANIME ISN'T REALLY YOUR THING

PLEASE WATCH THIS

it's one of these honest anime that does really on cliche anime tropes but instead gets to the point (therefore it can appease too people who might shy away from anime)

it's a beautiful show about discovering your passion and being thrust into the harsh reality that is of pursuing said passion but still persevering despite everything

finally figured out exactly what it is about the "stop complaining about the lack of women in shonen anime, if you want stories with strong and interesting female characters shojo is right there" argument that bothers me so much

Like do not get me wrong, I very much understand that the argument the people who say this are trying to make is "media intended for female audiences tends to get written off as shallow and/or worthless fluff but it's just as deep, complex, and interesting as stuff for guys, so if you aren't finding what you want in shonen you should give shojo a chance" but like they do need to understand if you see people, especially women, venting about how they love stuff like One Piece and Demon Slayer and Hero Academia but really, really wish there was more of it with female mcs or just with better female characters in general, and you tell them to watch shojo instead what they hear is "uh obviously media for boys isn't going to cater to you, silly, you're a girl, you should be watching Girl Stuff!" and for those of us who have traditionally masculine interests that's the exact same shit we've been hearing our entire lives from every angle the second we dare ask if the stuff we love can represent us too.

Plus like there's still the whole point about how shonen and shojo are still different genres and while yes, sometimes I want to watch Princess Tutu or Madoka Magica, sometimes I want to watch something like Naruto or Hero Academia and I really, really would like it if I could do the latter without being subjected to a master-class in how to be incredibly fucking weird about women.

“Can One Punch Man beat-”

Yes. Always. Good lord. I never understand why people can turn this into a big serious discussion. Yes, One Punch Man would beat Thanos. He would beat Luke Skywalker, Superman, every single character from Dragon Ball Z, and every ninja from Naruto. He would beat Thor and Wolverine and the Hulk in a tag team match.

Because he plays by different rules. One Punch Man is a PARODY character. His skill set is defined by comedy, not power levels or physical strength. One Punch Man not Superman facing off against an ever-more powerful lineup of villains. He’s the Roadrunner against Wil E. Coyote’s ever more convoluted plans. Deadpool is the only other super hero type character who comes close to living in the same realm of parody, but frankly, Deadpool repeatedly getting the crap beat out of him would be funnier than Deadpool winning, so One Punch Man would win that fight too, even if he can’t actually kill Deadpool in one punch. Because parody.

If I see another Youtube video recommended to me like “Could One Punch Man beat-” really, truly, I do not care.

I saw somebody also make this point once in another great post, I’m paraphrasing from what I remember; how strong is Saitama? However strong he needs to be in order for it to be funny.

Avatar
ckret2

The only possible matchups that Saitama might lose are ones where:

1) it’s conceivable that, due to the rules the other character is operating on (as in, whatever rules of comedy govern the other character’s universe), he might not be able to get in one punch.

AND

2) A compelling argument could be made as to whether it would be funnier for Saitama to lose that fight.

Canon example where both came into play: he lost the fight against that one mosquito, because it was tiny, fast, and flying, and because it was hilarious. Rule #1 alone isn’t enough, because if it isn’t funny for him to lose, he’ll find a way to punch through whatever restrictions are preventing him from punching the target.

So “could One Punch Man beat Superman/Thanos/Unicron/the Death Star?” will always go to OPM.

But you could have a compelling debate over “could One Punch Man beat the Animaniacs?”

Could Saitama beat Roger Rabbit

Saitama could beat Roger Rabbit similar to the way he could defeat Deadpool, but he could never beat Bugs Bunny. Bugs Bunny is at the top of the food chain.

Avatar
teaboot

No no no, but ROGER RABBIT OPERATES ON THE SAME PRINCIPALS.

Remember when Roger slides out of his handcuff for a joke, then slides it back on and suddenly can’t escape because it wouldn’t be funny?

That sort of implies that it’s less a question of, “is saitama MORE POWERFUL than roger rabbit?” than it is, “Could saitama’s victory be FUNNIER than roger’s?”

At that point, the power is in the hands of whichever character would be the FUNNIEST to come out on top.

And in order to decide that, we would in turn have to decide:

“Which is funnier: a totally jacked man whose single dream in life is to find an opponent who could stand a chance against him finally, finally finding a worthy adversary in a goofy rabbit in a bowtie…

…or a goofy cartoon rabbit getting his absolute ASS handed to him in a gloriously-animated anime smackdown, complete with a killer soundtrack?”

What about the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl?

Ooh, that’s a good one. Saitama can beat anyone in one punch if it’s funny… but Squirrel Girl can defeat any opponent she wants if it’s also funny. I think Squirrel Girl has the edge here primarily because of the ridiculousness of the character.

I second the vote for Squirrel Girl. It would be utterly hilarious if she beat him, but him beating her would just be kind of sad.

Saitama would finally think he has a worthy adversary in Bugs before a single punch knocks Bugs into a suit and a coffin that lands in the ground, instantly buried with a tomb stone and everything.  Realizing he’s killed the only true equal he’ll ever have, Saitama would openly weep over the grave while Bugs comes up in a widower outfit to grieve with him.

I think about this post a lot. I think this same argument applies to Alphadream Mario and Luigi btw

Saitama could not beat an abuela with a chancla in her hand. I will not be accepting arguments at this time, and neither will the abuela.

I love R. Dorothy Wayneright so much it’s unreal.

It’s The Big O, a turn-of-the-millennium mecha anime series made by Sunrise after they did some work on Batman the Animated Series, with a style very heavily influenced by that (as well as Giant Robo). Professional negotiator Roger Smith is secretly the pilot of the skyscraper-sized ‘megadeus’ Big O, a massive robot that he can send through a secret subway system to emerge anywhere it is needed within the domed metropolis of Paradigm City. Assisted by his butler Norman, Roger is soon joined by the deadpan android R. Dorothy Wayneright.

The Big O is remembered for its distinctive retro visuals, incredible soundtrack, gorgeous mech design and battles, and the really bizarre places the plot went later on.

I'm probably gonna get yelled at for saying this but sometimes something isn't a real problem in fandom, you just learned a Japanese word describing a general fandom practice and got scared and decided it meant "The Bad Ones" of that practice

Whenever you see someone being like "we don't mind when women enjoy or even create m/m content, we just hate fujoshis" you are being racist. If you mean "I hate the way some female fans treat gay men like fetish objects" then say that, and we can have a conversation based on that, but "fujoshi" is, I cannot stress this enough, just a word for any woman who likes M/M content, for better or worse. It may have started out as a reclaimed insult (by the way, the insult was based on "liking gay shit makes you perverted and sinful," not "please respect the humanity of gay men") but it does not make a distinction between The Good Ones and The Bad Ones. You just decided to No True Scotsman it and that the English word for that should describe The Good Ones and the Japanese word for it should describe The Bad Ones

Same goes for the people I saw just the other day whose discord server explicitly disallowed "Yaoi" but said that M/M content was allowed. What they meant was "M/M content is allowed as long as it isn't pornographic and fetishistic." What they actually said was "M/M content is allowed, but M/M content is strictly forbidden," and expected you to understand that the Japan-Adjacent term has porn/fetish connotations while the English-language term for THE SAME THING refers to the "normal, non-perverted" version.

It'd be like if you used the word "cartoons" to refer to all Family-Friendly animation, regardless of style or country of origin, whether it's Japanese or American or French or whatever, and used the term "anime" to refer to all animated pornography regardless of style or country of origin. There's plenty of animated pornography that isn't Japanese! There's plenty of anime that's not pornographic! But this is the sort of thing you do when you say shit like "obviously women can read stories about gay men, but NO FUJOSHIS"

THANK YOU

i don’t do fandom these days—in large part because so many people can’t behave and do shit like this—but anti-asian racism AND sex negativity has surged high in original m/m comics and literature too and it’s super creepy to see coming from self-professed progressives

I do love how FMA acknowledges that Ed is intentionally the opposite of a self-insert male power fantasy character like a lot of anime main characters are.

Like any time he threatens to get too cool the story completely guts it so fast and reminds us that he's a bratty little shit idiot bastard, literally so much of a dumbass jerk that his brother is aggressively offended that someone thought they might be alike.

Favorite example tho is them having Hohenheim IMMEDIATELY call Ed out for burning down their house like "you didn't do it bcs you're a badass who won't look back you did it cuz you're a dumbass kid who's running from his mistakes" like truly I'll never be over how this story starts to set Ed up to be so cool you can't even relate to him only to make you NOT WANT to relate to him bcs he's The Worst 90% of the time and nearly everyone hates him like 10/10 we love to see it

would like to clarify that I’m not kidding about unironically loving this, Ed is a fantastic character, I adore him, and more fictional teenagers should be allowed to be angry fucked up losers with hearts of gold especially in anime

like FMA shines specifically because it lets it’s characters truly be FLAWED!! the entire story is about how no one is perfect, everyone is fundamentally flawed and yet humanity is still worth fighting for because no matter how far we may fall, no matter how flawed we are, no matter how much harm we do, how much evil exists in the world, we are capable of just as much good and kindness and selfless, reckless love and we can always, ALWAYS, choose to be better

Ed spends the entire show trying to act older than he is and be cool and powerful and hide his mistakes and the show knocks him down every time, over and over, until he at last accepts that he is nothing more or less than a human and that it’s always been enough

god FMA is fucking incredible

I love it how at the end he tries one last time to be Cool Anime Hero with the whole "I'll give you half my life if you give me half" to Winry and she's just like "shut up you fucking idiot, that's not how it works, we give each other all of our lives because we love each other, we share our lives and the time we have, you shitty brat, you complete fucking imbecile"

Him being Like That is exactly why I related to him so much.
