The Unprintable News

All the planes that safely flew All the crimes folks didn't do The men who lived their day unharmed Free from danger and alarm

All the bridges that don't break The parts of Earth that never quake The homes that stand untouched by flame Those who of crime are never blamed

The friendly dogs who never bite The folks who sleep safe through the night All the simple kindly deeds That offer help to those in need

With headlines shouting all that's black My news provides the truth they lack: Although this world has fear and fright Much more often, things go right

something has gone deeply wrong when "focusing pragmatically on issues you can influence and working to make life better for yourself and your community" is considered an unserious distraction while "endlessly exposing yourself to media about distressing situations you can't control" is considered political engagement

Such a Blaze You Seldom See

Written for the Inklings Challenge 2022 ( @inklings-challenge ). Inspired by Robert Service’s “The Cremation of Sam McGee.”

January 6, 1897

Dear Lena,

Men say that strange things can happen in the Klondike. I never quite believed them till now. Now, I tremble to recall what happened to Sam and me a month ago when we crossed from Fort Yukon to Dawson in late December, a rough trip to be sure. I halfway suspect that what I saw was the strangest thing ever to happen in that frozen expanse. Whatever the case, it was a miracle.

You know better than anyone that Sam was always keen to leave Idaho. He would have liked to go anywhere else, but from boyhood his favorite notion was that he’d go back east for a fancy college education and become an engineer or an architect. Even more than that, though—more than anything, he wanted to marry you and start a family. He would have done right by you, Lena, if only he could have.

But God was unkind. Sam never went east, never got to college, and he broke your engagement, though it broke his own heart to do it.

The fun part of being human is that when something’s wrong you get to go “Is this spiritual, physical, emotional, environmental, or psychological?” and often the answer is just “Yes. :)”

Yep, this. What the hell do people think desk jobs consist of? Even if you're just forwarding paperwork you need to know your shit, because that paperwork can mean a license for a local small business owner, for example, or making sure a kid gets extra assistance at school. You don't wanna fuck that up, right? Then you gotta know your shit, and not talk out of your ass.

And that's not even talking about being, say, a tax consultant or lawyer, this is "only" about being a "paper pusher" who takes in applications and forwards them to the right person. Or who takes in invoices and makes sure they're paid on time, which will ensure the survival of the businesses that your company is doing business with.

Just because it's not heavy physical labor doesn't mean it's unskilled.

And I know this says "passable", but still, pushing one paper somewhere wrong can fuck up a person's application for insurance payout, or a craftsperson's income and existence, y'know, existential shit like that.

Let's focus our ire the right way. Give the bosses shit, not your fellow worker.

i'm credibly world-famous in my fields and i can't even do a credible day's work in a closely-related field without significant time to ramp up and learn the domain-specific skills.

like "programmer" isn't detailed enough. a c programmer who does embedded systems can't do a passable day's work as a kernel developer also in c without spending a long time learning new skills. if you're a python dev who does mostly machine learning, doing database work in go would take you months to learn. etc.

not at all disputing that i would struggle to do a shift in a restaurant or bar, mind. i'm just saying, the twitter poster is making the exact same mistake they're complaining about in other people -- assuming that the thing they hold in contempt is worthy of that contempt.

i see a post talking doom and gloom about how we'll never escape toxic masculinity. i think about back in 2017 when american girl released their first boy doll, and a review for him went viral in the collecting community. the review was written by a mom, who said they went into the store to get their daughter a doll, only to see their son's eyes light up like fire when he saw a doll that looked like him, and now every night he puts his doll in pajamas and rocks him to sleep. i think about the toddler in my daycare room a few years back who was obsessed with baby dolls, carrying them everywhere, and his mom proudly told us he uses his sisters' old baby dolls and wants to be just like them. that toddler saw another toddler crying one day and gave her the doll he had to cheer her up. i think about the eight-year-old boy i saw a few years back, excitedly waving around raya's sword in a target checkout line like all his dreams were coming true. there was a video on my instagram the other day of a little boy at disneyworld crying with joy upon meeting his hero, mulan. i think about the voice actor for bow in the she-ra reboot saying his nephews only wanted adora action figures. celebrity men are wearing dresses on tv now. last halloween i saw a little boy dressed as elsa. i went to go see spiderverse over the summer, and in the line ahead of me was a boy who couldn't be older than twelve or thirteen, bouncing and beaming, giddy with excitement over getting to see the female-led romance movie elemental. i think about the five-year-old boy at my library who breathlessly asked me where the pinkalicious books were, eyes widening when i had more on my cart, his mom explaining that he is all about pinkalicious and fancy nancy. i saw so many pictures online of boys and men dressed in pink to see barbie. teenage boys are gonna open their phones and see the man who wrote fucking game of thrones dressed in pink to see barbie. when i was a kid, a boy dressing in pink was practically a social death sentence. there are boys running around in pink on my street right now.

I know a company that does both these things and no surprise, when you shop there, the employees are always miserable and agitated. You should kill your managers in such situations imo. The only reason I receive treatment slightly above this is i'm lucky enough to have managers who are also bothered by these business practices. The water one is especially bad if you have heat intolerance, I was so sick regularly before I switched to a department with more leniency regarding water.

Depending on where you live these things may violate labor laws though so if you're in the same situation look into it. However in my experience any labor law violations happen without consequence regardless

"a department with more leniency regarding water" is an insane string of words

If you live in the US, the water thing absolutely violates labor laws.

OSHA requires employers to provide potable water to employees in the workplace. This water must be accessible to all employees and can be used for drinking, washing, and other personal needs.
Water quantity: The amount of water provided must be enough to meet the needs of all employees, taking into account the air temperature, humidity, and the type of work being done.
Water access: The water must be readily accessible to employees.

The lack of chairs is an OSHA violation too.

The approved code of practice on the regulations requires employers to provide suitable seats for workers who have to stand to carry out their work, if the type of work gives them an opportunity to sit from time to time and provide suitable seats for workers to use during breaks.

Yes, violations often happen without consequences. But remember, not keeping the poster with all your rights as a worker visible? Is a violation too.

Document it. Photos, screenshots, save your emails, record conversations if you're in a one-party consent state. Then?

Report their asses.

If nothing happens, report them again. And again and again, until someone pays attention.

Here's the link with info and how to file a complaint:

You can also call them: 1-800-321-OSHA

Keep in mind: complaints signed and submitted to local OSHA offices are more likely to result in OSHA inspections. Therefore, sending your complaints to OSHA's national headquarters may not be the fastest or most efficient method.

If you file online, it's automatically routed to the appropriate local office.

Even if there is not a specific guideline for the thing you want to report, all employers must adhere to the "general duty" clause... and you'd be surprised about all the things that fall under that.

For example, refusal to provide chairs anywhere in the building (in addition to being illegal and discriminatory anyway) also comes under the "fall protection" hazard. The CDC recommends that standing any longer than 15-30 minutes per hour can become a serious health hazard.

Yes- companies will always try to get away with breaking the law and fucking you over. That's how they've made their money.

But having a defeatist attitude and believing there is nothing you can do, and they'll never experience a consequence, so why bother reporting, is exactly how a lot of them keep getting away with it.

There are more of us workers than there are bosses. Solidarity- stand together, know your rights, and fight for them like hell. That is how we affect change.

Also always worth investigating whether it’s actually corporate policy or your store manager is on a power trip. When I worked at Cracker Barrel my manager told us cashiers weren’t allowed to keep water behind the register anymore and that we would have to call a manager to be relieved any time we needed water. Bear in mind this was highly discouraged and the managers would complain about how busy they were every time we interrupted them. Of course our managers told us this was a nonnegotiable, top-down rule—out of their hands etc.

I called corporate to anonymously follow up, and lo and behold this was not a top-down policy at all. The next day, a notice went out in our store that cashiers could once again keep our own water behind the register.
