there's two kinds of "shit's hitting the fan" trans posts

one is like "here's how you get your shit when it's illegal, here's resources to help you speed up your transition, here's places to plug into existing work"

and the other is like "DETRANSITION RIGHT NOW! don't talk about resources, that's illegal and they'll arrest you in your home tomorrow morning"

& it's like.. even when the latter people are themselves trans, it's just spreading the same fearmongering shit as cis people are. if a quick scan and summary of your message is "stop being trans" then you're not protecting anyone, you're adding to the transphobia of the social circles you're in

PLEASE dear god stop reblogging the "it's okay to detransition and recloset for your safety <3" post it's 1) crazy fearmongering and 2) yeah no shit, literally every corner of society says "y'know you could always detransition. it's okay to detransition. you should detransition have you tried detransitioning?" you going on about how detransitioning is cool and fine and necessary for safety is not the progressive move you think it is.

To the very tall catgirl in the fur coat and the skimpy outfit who went to a Halloween dance this weekend

Thank you so much for existing. We only talked for maybe 2 minutes while I was sitting down to take a breather but you were the first other trans woman I didn't already know before moving to this city that I've spoken to since living here. I know I wasn't the first or second or third person you spoke to that night, but you saying hi to me and telling me your name and asking if I was having an alright time meant so much to me.

I'll probably never see you again, but you're beautiful, and you're kind, and it's people like you who make being a tranny in this world a little less lonely. May your life be happy, may your friends be loving, and may your dance venues always have more than one bathroom from now on.

Stay safe out there.

Genuinely love the lack of the plural in so many titles. This is the book about Shark. This is the book about Mummy. This is the book about Knight. Oh, and another book about more Knight. Sorry, can’t hang out today, I’m staying home to learn more about ROBOT

Trans name chain I wanna hear all of y'all's chosen names and why you picked them :3

I'll go first:

I picked Saga cause it's a cute but still pretty unique scandinavian girl's name (I live in Denmark), because it's super fast to spell on a keyboard and because it means "story" in old nordic, which I really like cause this is my story, y'know? :>

I also recently found out Saga is the relatively unknown nordic goddess of stories, which I hate cause it means I accidentally fell into the tgirl stereotype of naming myself after a goddess xD

tag your mutuals or something idk \(ϋ)/

Awwww I always love the story of your name it’s so cute :>

Anyways! I picked Zara for a really stupid reason. I have a nickname that required a Z or an N to still work (because of the shape) and I almost went with Nora, but someone suggested it and it turned out to be a Hebrew counterpart to my deadname so why not.

It helps that it means, “shining, brilliant light” which is what I’d like to be one day. :3

those are amazing stories!

my parents veto’d my first name cuz of professional interpretation :p so i went after the goddess of lesbians lmao

Mountain Pretty

Name common

Me Sierra

So, through a long series of events, friend groups, and shenanigans, I've had like 50 nicknames over my near 20 years of life, "Zach" just being the first one, and most common.

I've had random nicknames, a soda, and a few feminine ones I've been trying since middle school, plus just "Z". I'd been Eris for awhile, loving the Greek connotations of discord and such. But what I've actually settled on actually had me looping back to the begining.

Zach was short for Zacharias, instead of one of the many other variations. And that name had always had a special connotation with my parents, and a friend of theirs who died before I was born, who they said I would've called uncle. So I never thought of it as a dead name, just one of many.

So I kept looking at it, while coming up with all these other names, till I got inspired by Rias. Yes, I will admit I watched the DxD anime when I was younger, but it was more than just taking her name. It was shortening that original one, just like I've done all my life, and it's stuck longer than almost any other (I was rootbeer for like 8 years...)

Abby isn't actually Abby chosen name.. -w- was given to her by one of the first mutuals she had when she first came to tumbly :3 most of her names are given by her exes tbh that's a pet girl for ya but anyway Abbys chosen name is lilli cause she loves lilligant and it reminds her of Yuri so win :3

Y'all feel free to join in :3

I didn't pick the name Q'Reba, it was given to me by my beloved @wolfgirlclit <33

My sfw blog

I've been wanting to make a blog dedicated to more serious, less sexual content for a while now and finally got around to actually putting up the thing. To me, it always feels a bit in poor taste to post important information about an ongoing genocide and then 5 minutes later say "my horny ass could never be a mechanic" so. If you want to hear me talk about the former, go to @catgirlkalishnikov.

Very typical of tumblr to think Forcefem is the funniest thing in the world when it's the meme of the month only to freak out at the mere suggestion that advice from other trans women could actually affect someone's perception of their gender identity. Like tranny shit is great for joke fodder but its actually pretty disturbing when people start taking it seriously. No wonder people on here would rather talk about how this or that transmisogynistic caricature is a #genderpunk icon than even mention an actual trans woman. It's just the aame old transmisogynistic bullshit dressed up in a "be gay do crimes" patched battle jacket

To be clear I'm not talking about the various bloggers that consistently post about forcefem and such as an actual kink that they have; most of them are transfem anyway. This is directed at the great mass of people who were happy enough to joke about forcefem during that phase when it was treated as a site-wide running gag while also participating in the various hysterical panics that emerge around the idea of "eggs". Like there's pretty significant contingent of people who'll laugh along with joke posts about say injecting men with estrogen and yet react with panicked disgust at the idea of a trans woman seriously suggesting that someone else who doesn't realise yet is showing potential signs of being transfem.

In addition to having absolutely zero understanding of actual material reality (like there's no other way that someone could seriously compare trans women talking about "eggs" to fucking conversion therapists), these people seem stuck in the mindset that essentially divides transfems into throw-away gags and dangerous predators. Time and time again you'll see trans women get tolerated as jokes but reviled and treated as a threat the second they ask to be taken seriously. The difference in response you see with Forcefem Jokes vs "Egg Discourse" is just one of the more obvious manifestations of this broader trend

See also: Tumblr's obsession with calling men (especially in fandom) "babygirl" but the shitstorm of indignation when you even casually suggest that man might be a woman.

For a very obvious (and relatively "harmless") fandom example, see the way people treated Jesse Pinkman when breaking bad was the popular fandom of the hour.

I apologize for calling Macklemore cringe

Macklemore has always been a comrade, he got into the rap industry through communist and anti-imperialist circles doing shows with Filipino and Arab artists like Prometheus Brown and Sabzi. People who call him cringe because of that thrifting song should absolutely listen to more of his music. Critical support for chairman Macklemore

Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).

When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".

When the boat is still being built, your say "it".

When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".

When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".

When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.

If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").

If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")

If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").

If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.

If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.

I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.

Okay, solve an argument I've been having. Say you have a catamaran or something and you want to take the boat out of the water for the winter. Does the catamaran revert back to it or stay she?

It would be deeply disrespectful to her to revert the pronouns just because she isn't being used at the moment. Even ships confined permanently to museums are still called she/her out of respect for their time working.

Additionally (from someone who does maintenance on boats professionally):

  • Traditional ships are always she/her no matter what. If a ship's made of wood, has sails (exceptions can be made for very small sailboats), or is just old enough, she's always a she.
  • If you're an outsider talking about a vessel that's hauled out for maintenance, you can use it/its.
  • If you're one of the people DOING maintenance on the ship, it is vitally important that you use she/her no matter what.
  • The larger a boat is, the more likely the boat is to use she/her, until you get to large cargo ships, which usually revert back to it/its.
  • If you're talking about a boat in a positive way, you must always use she/her ("she's got quite the motor in her, doesn't she?")
  • If you're talking about a boat in a negative way, you may sometimes use it/its ("it's a real loaf of bread in the water.")
  • Not technically about pronouns but a fun gender thing for boats with masculine names, sometimes we'll come up with feminine nicknames for them (like calling a boat named Captain Jack "Captain Jacqueline")
