He needs his jetpack to do The Thing, but if it works, it works, eh?

I went looking through my wip folder in desperate need for content and I found this unfinished piece. Here's the sketchy version for now :3

Darth Vader: Look! You actually appeared on screen this time! For almost one full minute! Boba Fett: Darth Vader: That's one minute more than you had last week! *nervous wheezing* Let's focus on the bright side, right...? 😅

boba fett: darth vader? what a loser i hate him i- *trips* *thousands of contracts with darth vader spill from pockets* fuck those aren’t mine i swear i’m just holding them for another bounty hunter i- *slips on a pile of contracts* fu ck no they’re not mine he can't afford me i just- *more contracts fall out as i fall to my knees, desperately trying to pick them up* hang on a sec jUst LISTEN

Boba and Vader are stuck together waiting for... Something. Maybe they're doing recon and Vader insisted he needed to see some things for himself, so Boba has to deal with an extra headache now. But they're here, everything is quiet, the target is asleep in a different building, and Boba is uncharacteristically antsy. Vader's presence alone is enough to put him off his game.

So what does Boba do? Propose match of holochess of course, "since it's going to be a long night and there's nothing better to do."

Vader's reply is his usual wheezing—perhaps a tad louder, like a snort or a scoff. The usual derision.

"Join me," Boba insists as he is booting up the game. "I've played far too often against myself to take any pleasure in it anymore."

"Each idle minute on the job will result in a thousand credit subtraction, so tread carefully, Fett."

"Hmm... there's plenty of more active things we could be doing, if idleness is ill-advised. In fact—"

"Fett."

Sullenly, Boba looks back at his game. Being in Vader's proximity like this had seemed rather spicy when Vader told him the plans, but he realizes now it is closer to disappointing than fun.

Vader simply stays beside the window, watching the device mounted on the wall for any changes in movement or heat activity.

Boba moves a pawn forward on the board, opening the back row of his pieces to better paths.

There are a few rare strategies he could apply to respond to this opening move.

He is thinking about each option, trying to settle on one that would be most unpredictable for both sides, when an invisible opponent moves a pawn forward two squares, meeting Boba's pawn diagonally.

Maybe there's still hope for this stakeout.

You won't see Vader physically look at the board until the moment there's a sudden "Checkmate!" and Vader turns around angrily, all "What do you mean checkmate?? There was no way you could have—"

—but Boba is just sitting there very smugly. He had only said the word in provocation.

"So you were paying attention, Lord Vader, and it wasn't just my holochess table gaining sentience."

Vader: >:U

I have very mixed feelings but what's this AU for if not to make me laugh. I can only hope it makes others chuckle too.

Vader: NOOOoooo!!

You know that fanart of Din just lying on the floor at Jabba's Palace and crying?

I'm picturing Vader's force ghost poking Din with a ghost stick like, "Who's this pathetic little man?"

Boba: "That's my partner."

Vader: "Business partner?"

Boba:

Boba, about to revel in the chaos: "Sure. Just like you were, I suppose."

So far I handled it humorously w Vader's force ghost, but there's also this other aspect that we should consider...

How different Anakin must seem to Boba, how strange! The pettiness, the quips, the self-confidence in his power—those are all familiar things. What's out of place is not just the face of a man framed by wavy auburn hair, but that face revealing a smile—mischievous, about to make a boastful claim—and that smile reaching Boba unfiltered by layers of durasteel and duraplast, driving all thoughts from his mind whenever he sees it. How can it be so?

Over a decade of tiptoeing around the most closed off man in the galaxy (beside Boba, that is) and now just standing in his vicinity is enough for Boba to receive an honest, even bashful look? Hell, Boba worked so hard to read Darth Vader's moods that seeing Vader—Skywalker like this feels like standing underneath a dam just as it breaks. A torrent of water crashing into him all at once.

The things Boba has entertained only at night, in the privacy of his ship, and in the company of inebriation, he could... He could reach out now. The silent, subdued impulses to give a gift, to spoil, to show that he cares, sincerely, like he's always wanted, yet he hesitates.

How bewildering to become the more reserved one between the two of them.

Thinking about Boba seeing Anakin's force ghost for the first time, going "Who the fuck are you?" to which Anakin replies by simply lifting an eyebrow wih barely container irritation, leading to a very sincere "You looked like that? 😳" reaction from Boba once the situation is cleared up.

TIL that Vader's right glove is of Mandalorian make. Imagine Boba Fett noticing the design one day and instantly growing irritated because he didn't give Vader the glove and he never considered that there might be another Mandalorian in Vader's life proximity, alright? This is a terrible development. Whose glove is it? Is Boba still the favoured one here? jealousy jealousy

(Then there's Vader just standing there, not noticing Boba's growing turmoil for a good while. He's too busy repressing his perpetual physical agony.)
