I was today years old when i found out that i was allowed time off to vote. Something no boss has ever told me.

Reblogging now but I'm also scheduling this to post again at the end of October, when folks may need a reminder that they may have right to time off work to vote.

Yeah, if you live in a paid time state nearly no boss is going to tell you this, or that you don't have to clock out. Tell others you work with. Take those two hours.

hey, solidarity to everyone out in philly tonight protesting the police murder of walter wallace jr. i know the story’s probably gonna get buried by all the supreme court stuff, so if anyone out there has a specific bail fund or mutual aid org that people trust out there please let me know about it so i can boost it. i’ll be keeping an eye out in the coming days

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how the appreciation of art in any form has been reframed as “Content Consumption” - a phrase which focuses on the transactional relationship rather than the experience the audience is given through observation of the art.

It is the difference between saying  “I’ve bought several books by This Author.” rather than… “I’ve enjoyed reading several books by This Author.”

Another thought I had about this. I think that a big part of the reason “Content” has become the word of choice is because it specifically frames the subject in a way that is advantageous to corporations. Videos, music, games, and everything else on a computer is Information, and saying “Information Consumption” immediately reveals the absurdity behind the idea of intellectual property particularly in relation to the internet.

Consumption inherently implies that the product is somehow removed from market circulation as a result. This might be because the owner is not presumed to resell it - or it might be literal in the case of food and other perishables. However when you “consume” a video online, you have not meaningfully removed that video from circulation in any way. There was no singular “Video Unit” that will no longer be available.

It’s information - and information is shared not consumed. When I read a book the text does not vanish from the pages. When I copy a file the original is not stolen away. The phrasing here is obviously corporate - an attempt to enshrine corporate positions on intellectual property into the English language.

Sherrie did her part to make sure Black Lives Matter protestors were able to exercise their constitutional right to assemble & protest safely.  The police have now charged her with felonies for doing so.  The International Anti-Fascist Defence Fund is helping to ensure that Sherrie is defended in the courts after she defended us all in the streets.   Help defend the constitutional rights of people like Sherrie by making a contribution to the Defence Fund today!

not to make people feel guilty for ignoring what's going on in poland but i am going to do exactly that. we need international attention. our government breaks human rights everyday. when we protest, they treat us with tear gas. they beat us up, they throw rocks at us, they strangle us. they're killing us. they're slowly taking away our rights until there's none left, and it will go unnoticed. unless there's some kind of international attention, they're not going to stop. pay attention to poland.

Hey ya'll. Remember when the US needed international attention for BLM? Well Poland needs it now and it's time to step up and do our part. The government is overstepping their boundaries. No government should be using teargas (a war crime...illegal in fucking wars) on its own people. No government should be killing its own people. And no government should be restricting healthcare access from its own people.

thank you for this! although i'd like everyone to remember that black lives matter protests are still happening and police brutality and racism in the US are still huge issues that need our attention. it's not over! poland has had police brutality issues for a long time now but right now, it's gonna be even worse because people are protesting.

for any polish people who plan on attending the protests, stop bzdurom has a safety guide for protesters on their story

Anonymous asked:

so let's say hypothetically that I was scared shitless of the future (fascism, global warming, etc). of all the resources you've shared what do you think are the MOST vital/effective/fast

I feel you, man. Here’s a few ideas

  1. Radical unions. Over 60% of millennials are in favor of unions, but fewer than 5% are members. If 60% of a workplace is organized, that union has a fuckton of control over their conditions - and with some good messaging could no doubt expand into that 40% that’s opposed or unsure. Join the IWW, especially if there’s a local branch (if not, maybe you can help organize one), and they’ll give you all the resources you need. Maybe even consider salting, which is where you join jobs specifically with the intent to organize them (if you’ve seen Sorry To Bother You, Squeeze is a salt). There are a ton of people who are waiting for an opportunity to unionize - take advantage of that
  2. Solidarity economy. On the business/municipal level, the cooperative movement. On the community level, the Transition Initiative. And on the interpersonal level, the Buy Nothing Project. These build an alternative to capitalism from the grassroots and have had great success. I think that’s partially because they’re inoffensive and not overtly political - you can convince pretty much anyone to start sharing and trading things, or to support worker-owned businesses. I think this is our best bet for moving away from capitalism and towards sustainable socialism fast
  3. Meshnets. I know this seems kind of arbitrary and small compared to the others, but communication and organization is vital to any movement, and we’re already seeing surveillance and censorship over the internet which has every potential to get worse. Meshnets are near-impossible to censor or monitor without physically damaging the equipment, and since that equipment is very easy and cheap to DIY and not particularly easy to spot, it’d be fairly safe from fascism. I can also tell you that most people are super psyched about mesh networking when someone actually tells them what it is, so we just need to spread the word and expand the networks and infrastructure

I stand by my belief that everyone should focus on what they’re good at and passionate about, since that will avoid burnout and make you the most useful, but if you’re really filled with a need to change things right now, those are some good starting points

i learned that in August 2014 Women’s Voices for the Earth commissioned testing of four types of Always menstrual pads, manufactured by Procter & Gamble. The certified laboratory STAT Analysis Corporation analyzed the products for volatile organic compound.

“The results of the testing indicate that both scented and unscented Always pads emit toxic chemicals, including chemicals identified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Toxicology Program, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, and the State of California Environmental Protection Agency as carcinogens, and reproductive and developmental toxins. None of these chemicals are disclosed on the product by the manufacturer.” (x)

I switched to dye free fancy cotton pads, after years of having periods so fucking bad I would sometimes faint, and now i just get like. regular cramps occasionally, they’re not even that bad anymore.

i switched back to these after using fancy organic cotton pads during my most recent period & they caused PROBLEMS out of the blue - 100% confirmed, these are not good to use

been using these reusable menstrual pads since november 2019 and im never going back to these commercial pads. commercial pads like these always gives me skin rashes which is so annoying. switch to reusable i swear you’ll not only be period-ready but also rashes-free!

psa they also have a starter pack in case you want to switch and you dont know what to get and an xl size for plus sized women!

EXPLAINS ALOT. WOULDVE BEEN NICE TO KNOW AWHILE AGO. COOOOOOL.

Plus, there’s a study that showed that vagina are highly vascular so, basically, every chemical you put down there is absorbed by your body real fast and really well. In short, ditch tampon too.

TAMPONS are dangerous frequently the direct cause of TSS  TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME

Yeah, reusable pads were one of my first major eco-friendly changes but my body has been way happier that way. They are infinitely more comfortable and effective, and I just throw them in my washing machine on the hand wash + extra rinse and hang dry. I can’t say being on your period is ever pleasant, but it’s way better than before - ESPECIALLY in situations where you can’t change as often - and I don’t feel like the harbinger of the end of the world when I look at my restroom trash can anymore :)

I always buy generic brands but wasnt “always” the ones who were sending fucked up pads to women in africa just a few years ago too???? Fuck always brand.

PSA!!!

they now have a budget-friendly trial pack so you no longer have to worry which pad fits best for you. you can just buy the pack to get one pad of each size!!

Could the fact that i use Always brand be the reason i get such bad cramps?? I must test this theory…

Also, pads can take up to 800 years to decompose. Yikes.

Dear @nytimes

Please take down your pay wall for all the stories about Donal Trump’s failure to pay taxes for years and cheating America.

The people have the right to know and not all of them can pay to read your very important story.

this is NOT a pdf of the Sept. 27, 2020 NY Times article about the deep thorough investigation into Trump’s tax returns or anything…..

do NOT check out this reblog to see if it’s been edited with an article for you to read or something….

Sunday afternoon, dozens of non-Indigenous commercial fishing boats continue to surround Mi’kmaw fishers in St. Mary’s Bay, hauling up lobster traps set by the Mi’kmaq.

The Sipekne’katik First Nation launched its moderate livelihood fishery on Thursday in Saulnierville, a three-hour drive west of Halifax. In the days since, there have been confrontations with non-Indigenous fish harvesters on the wharf and on the water.

Maybe its fundamentally not healthy for a government to have a judicial branch that relies on a fucking handful of judges who are appointed for a literal LIFETIME and with 0 input from the people. JUST A THOUGHT

People in the comments saying that the supreme court has been good until Mitch McConnel ruined it are living in a fantasy. It is ridiculous to act as if the supreme court has been insulated from politics and only looks objectively at the law. The supreme court has used race science several times in Dred Scott v. Sanford and Plessy Vs Ferguson to uphold white supremacy, all the way in the 1800′s. You can look through lists of Supreme Court decisions that only exist to protect and maintain the US empire.

ruth bader ginsburg has died. call your senators and remind them over and over and over again of mitch mcconnell’s own rule to not replace supreme court justices in a presidential election year. call them as many times as it takes until they agree to not fill the seat until 2021. 202-224-3121

[comment by Reddit user Sam474:

I think people aren’t giving the internet enough credit.

You grow up being told how great capitalism is and then you get online and find out that people in other countries have the same standard of living we do but without the constant fear of bankruptcy.

You grow up thinking “going to the doctor is expensive, don’t get sick and if you do don’t go until you’re sure you HAVE to” and then you find out most of the developed world can go to the doctor for free, or at least for a very affordable rate.

You grow up thinking “Work hard and be successful and you can retire at 65 and travel a little.” and then you get online and find out pretty much all of Europe gets weeks and weeks of vacation time a year and is doing their travelling in their 20s and 30s and loving it.

The list goes on and on. I grew up in the conservative south and it wasn’t an uncommon conversation starter when I was a kid for people to open up with things like “What church do you go to?” and so that’s what I thought the world was. Church and working for the weekend and be careful to save your pennies and not splurge and don’t get sick. It wasn’t until the internet appeared that I realized how differently a lot of people live and how much more appealing a lot of that sounded.

When you hear that someone else had a kid and it didn’t cost them any money, got a year off to raise it, gets free daycare, and goes to spain twice a year for vacation it’s pretty hard to still feel content with your 60 hour work week, 2 weeks off a year that you’re discouraged from actually using, and health insurance as your second biggest monthly bill.]

And from a European perspective, you grow up hearing everybody talking about how great the US is (because we get a lot of American TV and films, and America as a nation never seems to neglect an opportunity to blow its own trumpet) and people talking about how we should be more like them, and then you hear stuff like this…

I live in Belgium.

On September first I'm unemployed again, if I don't find a job.

I'm not worried. My healthcare for the year is paid. I'll get unemployment benefit for the (hopefully short) time I'm between jobs. So I'll be able to pay my mortgage and other bills. I have a college degree, savings, I've paid all my hospital bills without issues. I can afford my ADHD meds without any issues.

I see all these deprecating posts joking about millennials never bring homeowners. But half my friend are homeowners. I'm 29. I bought my apartment when I was 27.

Politicians and big businesses have been bleeding you dry and they got you thinking that everyone is living like this. But we're not. America isn't the norm. It's the exception.
