Wibbley Wobbley Timey Whimey: The Glee Edition
It’s no secret that Glee has thrown the physics of time and space out the window. Graduation has been approaching for what feels like a lifetime, people travel across continents on a whim, and McKinley seems to be trapped in a weird Bermuta Triangle where time stands still and teenagers never age. There are a lot of reasons why it doesn’t make sense. Here’s just one.
In “Sadie Hawkins”, Tina tells everyone in student council that there are “officially 142 days until prom.” Writers -> shovel -> hole.
Since I’m guessing they didn’t have prom on a Wednesday, this means that New Directions started spring semester on January 2nd, the day after New Years (way to be a bummer, McKinley) and that their prom landed on May 24th, a Friday (gross, but that’s the only feasible way it works).
Since no one acted differently at Prom, I’m guessing Finn’s death and funeral must’ve happened just after that, in the last week of May. When we return to Glee, Kurt says it’s been 3 weeks since Finn’s funeral. That puts us at the week of June 16th at the start of the ep. A full week passes during The Quarterback. We’re now at the week of June 23rd.
Let’s say that “A Katy or a Gaga” picks up that week. Mr. Schue says it’s six weeks until Nationals. Later on, we travel through a vortex and he says it’s only four weeks till Nationals, even though only a week has passed. That means, if they didn’t change the date of Prom, that the McKinley students are still going to school in July and Nationals falls somewhere around Saturday, August 3rd.
