“Major.” That’s McKay, hurrying after him up the corridor. John doesn’t slow down. They’ve got to get to the bottom of this right now and bring Teyla and the Athosians back into the conversation. It’s gone on long enough.

Someone has folded Sheppard’s hands over his stomach. The image has Rodney frozen. With his head tipped back on the pillow and his hands folded just so, Sheppard could almost be dead. He was dead just a few hours ago and a panicky part of Rodney’s brain can’t let it go.

Rodney is still frozen where he stands. He can’t move a muscle when he tries—nothing more than a wild jerk of his head to see that yes, Sheppard still has the gun aimed at his leg and yes, Sheppard is still staring, his mouth hanging slightly open. Without really thinking, without even meaning to, Rodney says again, “I can’t believe you shot me.”

It’s hard to believe that ten minutes ago everything had been spinning out of control, spinning out there in space with a MALP that they’re never going to be able to retrieve, their people captive without even the option of rescue. Now he can set things right. He can get everyone back and it’s all because McKay’s handed him a real life spaceship.

It’s like being high or maybe just good, old-fashioned drunk or—it’s like he’s been flying for hours, pulling off maneuvers he only dares to dream about most of the time. The dizziness is suddenly nothing compared to the giddy feeling bubbling up in his chest. It’s so fast and absolute that he has to grab at McKay’s arm to make sure he doesn’t just float away.

“Lieutenant,” John says again, fingernails biting into his wrist where he’s still holding it behind his back. “I know, I know—you’re Colonel Cool,” Cadman says, almost singsongs. “I’m just saying—I think he’s more than fine with it.”

“Time for a checkup with Beckett,” Sheppard says, bumping at Rodney’s bunk with his knee. Repeatedly. “Wants to confirm that we’re not burnt to a crisp. Or melting. Or completely irradiated. Something like that.”

This isn’t exactly how John’s imagined getting McKay into bed, but it’s necessary—Beckett’s orders, even. Get McKay in a bed ASAP. Let him sleep off the stimulants and stress. So John shuffles McKay out of the infirmary and back to his quarters. McKay grumbles the whole way and John has to explain three times that there aren’t any open beds in the infirmary for McKay to crash in.
