Series: Part 8 of Destiel deserves better

Avatar

Cas has a crush on his best friend Dean, but he knows he’s not good enough for him. Dean is pretty much perfect so he deserves someone on that level.

So Cas starts trying to mold himself into this person he thinks Dean might want. He trades in his worn out overcoat and backwards ties for tailor-made suits that put in him debt, and ascots. He gets a haircut and asks the hairdresser to teach him to style it.

When he goes to the bar where he always meets Dean for their bi-weekly after-work drinks, Dean’s already at the bar. Cas moves to take the open stool beside him.

“Sorry, man,” Dean says. “That seat’s taken.” He takes a drink of his beer.

Cas glowers down at the offending stool - its flimsy four legs and ripped leather top. “Oh. Is someone else joining us?”

Dean turns his head, looks at Cas, and starts choking.

Cas pats him on the back. “Are you alright?”

Coughing, Dean waves him off. When he can speak again, he says, “What are you wearing?”

“You don’t like it?” Cas tugs on the lapels of his jacket. It doesn’t have as much give as his last suit.

“No, it’s… I mean…” His face is turning red, probably from the coughing. “You got a date or something?“

Slouching, Cas mumbles, “Or something.”

Cas moves his phone to the other ear as he hikes Claire up on his hip again. She squirms, but goes back to trying to pull the phone out of his hand, rather than trying to escape his arms as she’d been doing just a moment ago.

“Are you sure you can’t get out of it? This is a really important lecture, Gabe, I can’t miss it.”

Gabriel sighs on the other end of the phone. “I’m really sorry, Cassie, I am. But this deal could change everything—they only invited me to lunch this morning and I’ve been trying to get a meeting with them for months!”

Claire wriggles enough that Cas nearly drops her, and he huffs with annoyance, holding his phone in place with his shoulder while putting her down on the tiled kitchen floor. She sits there, looking around in her inquisitive way.

Cas leans his hip on the counter, grabbing his phone with one hand and reaching up to rub at his forehead with the other. “Okay. Okay, I know how much the deal means to you. I’ll find someone. Let me know how it goes, okay?”

“Thanks Cassie, you’re the best.”

Cas hangs up and looks down, to see…nothing. Claire has only been crawling for a few weeks, and it’s suddenly impossible to pin her down. Cas heads into the living room to see her gleefully chewing on the tail of the grumpy cat toy Gabriel had given him years ago but which Claire had adopted as her own. He releases a relieved breath—toys are fine. Yesterday he’d come out to see her picking up bits of dry cat food, and he’d had to hastily banish all traces of cat things behind a baby gate, save poor Minerva herself. At least she keeps herself well away from the small screaming human on her own.

Who could he call? Anna sometimes watches Claire on weekends for him, but his sister works on Tuesdays. It’s too late-notice to try to get a sitter through the service that Anna had suggested. He curses Gabe all over again, but he knows his brother needs to see this deal through for his catering business.

There’s nothing else to do—he’s just going to have to bring Claire with him. He can’t miss this lecture—they’ll be discussing the assessment component of the course. Plus, he always looks forward to Dr. Winchester’s lectures, and not just because he always seems to get Cas’ creative wheels whirring—he also happens to be one of the most attractive men Cas has ever met.

Idk dude. U trying to catch someone under there?

Cas hedges.  I don’t want to kiss anyone who’d only do it because of a plant.

Fair enough. Just leave it up tho. U’ll break an ankle climbing up ur rickety ladder. Dw u don’t have to kiss me

Cas puts his phone down and doesn’t reply.  He indulges in two glasses of wine.

Cas jerked awake at the sound of music through the thin apartment walls. It was loud to wake him, but still indistinct enough that Cas couldn’t make out the words. It didn’t matter. Even half asleep, he recognized the music as Dean’s, which meant it was likely Zeppelin or Metallica.

More importantly, it was a good indication that Cas was late for class.

He stretched, his back in kinks from having fallen asleep at his computer yet again. The cursor blinked right where he’d left off in the short story he was writing for English class, the last line taunting him.

”Is there anything you want to tell me?”

In disgust, Cas deleted the line and quickly exited out of the program. It was stupid, to use his creative writing assignment as some sort of self therapy for his unresolved feelings. He hadn’t meant to, honestly, but he was halfway through a tale of unrequited love between two best friends before he’d realized that shit, he was writing about himself and Dean.

At that point, it was just too painful to keep working on the assignment. If he fixed things for his characters so they ended up together, it would be a sad parody of his life. If he left things as pathetic for his lead character as it was for himself, it’d just serve to remind him how miserable he was.

Unintentional Hello

Cas and Meg are working in a coffeeshop that a certain customer frequents every morning. Castiel is very shy, and hasn’t even told Mr. Grande-Americano-No-Sugar-No-Cream-Please-Just-Coffee his name, or asked for the man’s.
And then he accidentally introduces himself, in about the best way possible.

“You know, Clarence, he’s not gonna bite.” Meg smirked from her casual lean against the countertop, dangerously close to the new espresso maker. “Actually, if he does, send him my way, I’d love to— “

“Aannnd we’re done.” Castiel interrupted, furiously scrubbing down the glass top of the display case. He could feel his face burning. “Let’s talk about something else. How old are these cake pops?” He was throwing out a weak line, he knew, but he was hoping it would hold. Maybe she’ll let it go this time, he thought desperately. He heard his imaginary rescue rope snapping as soon as Meg rolled her eyes.

When he tries to up the ante by arranging a mistletoe kiss at the party, Dean rejects him out of hand and out of embarrassment. Feeling sad about how he mistreated Cas, Dean researches (with Sammy) and finds out about Russian holiday Christmas traditions and designs a great big sorry for Cas—complete with Russian delicacies and a mixed tape. Will his apology convince Cas that what they share is love actually?

Cas is twenty-six and has never been kissed. It’s never been a problem, but now his advisor is saying that his dissertation, a romance novel, is lacking a personal touch and won’t be liked by the board. With one day until it is due Cas is at wits end, but maybe his roommate, Dean, can give him a few pointers. 2.9k [AO3 Link]

“You love me?” Jo asked with wide, open eyes.

Anna nodded back timidly and tried to walk away, but Jo caught her arm before she could make her escape.

“How long? How long, Anna?” she demanded. “How long have you loved me?”

Anna may have been an angel, bright and powerful and able to smite Jo in an instant, but in that moment, the angel looked completely and utterly human. Her eyes were downcast and her lip was perched between her teeth. She looked terrified, which was beyond Jo. How could an angel of the Lord be terrified of a simple human like her?

“Ever since I pulled you from Hell,” she whispered. “When I touched your soul, it was the purest thing I’ve ever felt in my life. From that first caress of your being, I knew that I’d Fall for you, Jo. I just knew.”

“Anna…” Jo trailed off, because what the hell. How could an angel love her, a hunter? It didn’t make any sense, because angels hated hunters. The only reason Jo was topside was because she was a pawn in their games, and even though she thought Anna wasn’t like the others, she still had doubts at times. She thought that Anna was just putting up with her, that Jo’s love for the angel was unrequited.

“I should go,” Anna said as she turned on her heel. Her large, obsidian wings flew out, ready for flight.

Jo felt herself panic as Anna crouched down. She couldn’t let her angel leave, not after a confession like that one.

“No you don’t,” Jo said, reaching forward and turning Anna around. With a fire within her, Jo leaned in and

“Their lips…no. They touch one another with their mouths…no. They…uh…mack on one another for a long time…the end.” Cas pushed his laptop away and ran fingers through his hair, groaning. “This is impossible,” he muttered to himself, and brought his elbows up onto the table.

He’d rewritten the ending scene with Anna and Jo’s kiss a thousand times, but it never worked out. Professor Mills cited a lack of personal touch, and told him to base the kiss on his own experiences. “Add a little raunchiness, will ya?” she said to him with an upturned grin. He nodded and laughed along at the time, but now he was truly panicking. He was never going to finish his dissertation before tomorrow’s board presentation, and it would all be because he’s the only twenty-six year old on the planet who has never been kissed.

It wasn’t like he hadn’t tried before. Back in college, Cas was almost kissed a few times, the closest being when he was playing a drunken game of spin the bottle with his floormates. It landed on a girl named Meg, a feisty business major who was known for her escapades in the bedroom, but when she leaned in and tried to kiss him, he couldn’t do it. When Cas imagined his first kiss, it always was with someone he really cared about, not some girl from Edlund Hall that he barely knew.

“Yeah, wait until you find the perfect person to kiss. That’ll do you a lot of good,” Cas angrily muttered to himself as he pulled his computer back towards him. The cursor blinked back at him mockingly, and Cas carefully began typing.

“With a fire within her, Jo leaned in and grabbed Anna’s face-”

“No, no, no!” Cas cried out as he pounded on the keys. Even if he had no experience, why couldn’t he write this damn scene? Kissing was not rocket science, and he’s read enough romance novels in his life. Why can’t he just write a few lines and get it over with?

“Cas?”

He cringed when Dean’s voice hit his ears. The last thing he needed was his roommate seeing him all up in arms over this, especially since he was the one Cas had been trying to get the courage to kiss for years now. He quickly thought that if he wasn’t such a coward, then maybe he’d be able to not fail out of his dissertation.

“In my bedroom!” Cas called out, and began fruitlessly typing nonsense as Dean’s footsteps ricocheted off the hardwood floors, stopping when he reached Cas’s door.

“You okay?” Dean asked, and Cas turned around to see his friend leaning against the doorframe, lips turned up into a smirk as he toed the ground with his boot.

Perhaps it’s heightened by Cas’s troubles, but Dean looked even more handsome than usual. His jeans were rolled up at the bottom, revealing his ankles, and his white t-shirt was dirtied from his work shift at the garage. Combined with his playful gaze and his hands in his pockets, Cas felt himself blanching.

“Earth to Cas? You there, buddy?” Dean said as nodded in his direction.

Cas blinked owlishly a few times before going back to his laptop. “Yes, I’m sorry. I’m just trying to finish my dissertation.”

Dean walked over to his computer and peered over Cas’s shoulder. He could feel Dean’s breath on his neck, and it took everything in him to not turn his head and close the distance between them. It would be the perfect moment to get experience-

“Wow, this sucks,” Dean snorted, and alas, the moment was broken.

Cas glared up at Dean and pushed away from his desk. “You think it’s crappy? I’m presenting this to the board tomorrow,” Cas reminded him with emphasis. “And you decide to tell me now that it’s crappy?”

Dean held up his hands and backed away into the bed. He plopped down and replied, “Crappy isn’t the right word. It’s just…lacking. Jo grabbed Anna’s face and kissed her until they broke apart tells me nothing,” he said, quoting the last thing Cas wrote down. “I want to read about what the kiss felt like for Jo, you know?”

Cas took a deep breath and took a seat next to Dean. He folded his hands in his lap and glanced out the window, then asked the question that had been on his mind all day. “What does it feel like to be kissed, Dean?”

Avatar

Ok but like imagine that Dean and Cas both have their own small children, I'm picture Dean with a cute and sassy 6yo girl and Cas with a smart and awkward 6.5yo boy, and Dean and his daughter have a cooking channel on YouTube where they cook together and make things that's easy for kids to help with (and Dean has other videos where he's alone, but it's mainly with his daughter). And Cas watches them bc he wants to do some bonding with his son, and he falls in love with Dean through his videos.

Avatar

I mean OBVIOUSLY I had more to this. Like, because let’s be real, Cas watches these videos by himself first because he has to make sure he actually can do them and if they’re appropriate (because he’s one of those parents you know), and so his son (I kind of really want to call him Abel, but I feel like it’d be a biblical name don’t you think?) has no idea his dad is up late watching YouTube videos about kid-friendly cooking/recipes.

BUT IF HE DID, he would know that his dad is totally watching his friend’s dad because YES, Cas’s son and Dean’s daughter totally go to the same school and are in the same class. But Cas doesn’t know that because Dean only calls his daughter by her first initial and he only goes by “Daddy” by his daughter in the videos. So Cas doesn’t really know who this guy is because maybe Dean can’t make it to the open house nights at the school, and so he’s never seen Dean before except for on YouTube.

But then of course there’s a big one, a celebration of the students kind of open house and Dean finally works it out to have the night off so he can finally make it to his little girl’s school’s open house (because she has totally been giving him a hard time every time he misses one because “Daddy all the other parents go with their kids. Why can’t we???”). And he strides in with his daughter on his hip, looking absolutely adorable with her hair braided (because Dean is not only a producer of YouTube content, he is also a viewer and stays up late learning how to do his daughter’s hair… maybe from this guy *warning fandom crossover happening*).

And Cas doesn’t notice him at first because he’s totally up at the front of the auditorium, his son by his side. But after the opening stuff, they’re allowed to mingle, and his son runs up to this little brown-haired girl with her hair all braided with a bow, to say hi and go get a cookie. And Cas thinks to himself that the little girl looks familiar, but he can’t quite place her (because let’s be real when he watches the videos it’s not like he’s focusing on the kid, he’s watching the muscles of the guys arms while he stirs the batter. You can’t tell me his thousands of viewers weren’t focused on that exact thing.)

BUT THEN, this tall, handsome man with green eyes strides up to the little girl and runs his hand absently over her head as she introduces him to Cas’s son, and that’s when Cas finally realizes where he’s seen the little girl. And then his son is looking at him and waving him over and crap. It’s the guy on YouTube with the cooking videos that Cas has been watching over and over and over again and has yet to cook a damn thing.

“Hi, I’m Dean,” the man says, his hand extended.

“Castiel,” he replies, shaking his hand.

“It’s nice to meet you,” Dean says with a smile, and Cas grins back and nods.

“Likewise.”

Real (AO3)
Summary: Castiel’s in love with his best friend and he would give anything for Dean to ask him to prom. But that’s not going to happen. Right?

A tap on the window makes Castiel get up from his desk and look out across his yard. When he looks down Dean is there, looking as beautiful as ever, with a large sign saying ‘Will you go to prom with me?’. And of course it’s raining. Not too hard but not too light. Just perfect.

In an instant Castiel is thundering down stairs and racing straight out into the yard and into Dean’s arms, his best friend for years and the only person he’s ever had a crush on. Somehow everything is coming true.

Dean’s lips are soft compared to the light graze of rough stubble that Castiel can feel on his skin. It’s Castiel’s first kiss and it’s better than he could’ve ever imagined. When they pull back to breathe, Dean rests their foreheads together before speaking.

“I’m sorry I’ve taken so long to pull my head out of my ass but I’m in love with you, Cas. I have been for a very long time. So, please, let me take you to prom? Let me start making up for all the years lost?”

Dean’s eyes are shining, the water from the rain making his skin glisten and Castiel nods. “Okay.”

“I love you, Cas.” and Castiel’s heart pounds out of his chest.

“I love you too, Dean.”

Then their lips are colliding again and Dean’s arms are wrapped around him and holding him close.

“Mr Novak?”

Castiel winds his own fingers through Dean’s hair as they continue to passionately -

“Mr Novak!”

Castiel’s nearly jumps out of his seat, causing the rest of the class to erupt in laughter.

“Ah, finally paying attention now, are you?” Mr Crowley quips, to which Castiel nods shyly, his cheeks heating in embarrassment as he tries to slide further down his chair and sink into the floor.

“So, would you like to perhaps answer the question on the board or are you still day dreaming about the intimate time you’ll have with your video games when you get home?” Mr Crowley asks, making the class of students laugh even louder.

Castiel quickly looks up to the board and does the math in his head before sputtering out a simple, “Twenty-two,”.

Mr Crowley rolls his eyes. “You’re lucky you’re good at math.” Thankfully though, his teacher continues on with the lesson without humiliating him further.

“You okay there, buddy?” Castiel turns his head, to come eye to eye with Dean who’s sitting next to him, a worried look on his face.

“Yes. Of course I’m fine, why wouldn’t I be?”

Dean frowns. “I don’t know, man. You just seemed pretty out of it. Must of been a damn good dream.” he says, before smirking and looking back towards the front of the class.

Castiel sighs. Yes, it was. A good dream but a dream nonetheless.

Christmases When You Were Mine

SPN Song Creations Challenge | from: goodtidingsdean to: @bennyandthevampsHappy holidays my dear! prompt: Christmases When You Were Mine by Taylor Swift; part of my series Dean Winchester Loves Taylor Swift pairings: destiel word count: 735 tags: no archive warnings apply, cas is pining, post-break up ao3

It’s strange to feel so downtrodden during arguably his favorite time of year. But this year is different than other years.

Castiel has always loved Christmas. It’s better than Halloween and New Years, certainly far better than Thanksgiving, more festive than the 4th of July and Easter or Memorial Day or something.

Being religious means the holiday takes a different tone for him and his family than other families, but that’s something Cas has grown to appreciate. He genuinely enjoys carols, volunteering, the services, and the “reason for the season,” as his mother would call it.

But this year, Christmas is far more somber.

His studio apartment feels a lot more empty than cozy right now.

The tree is up and decorated. The nativity on his mantle. Ingredients for cookies in the kitchen.

He didn’t hang up the mistletoe this year, though it had been central to the decorating process last year.

From his spot curled up on the couch, he looks out the window towards the city lights. Darkness falls earlier in Chicago now that it’s mid-December. He’ll be making the drive to Pontiac this weekend, and spending a couple of days before and after Christmas with his family before coming back.

It’s strange to feel so downtrodden during arguably his favorite time of year. But this year is different than other years.

This year, he doesn’t have Dean Winchester.

Mister Scarecrow Hates Halloween

Castiel was not a big fan of Halloween. For one thing, he was constantly cold; late October in Kansas had a tendency to easily slip from what one would cheerfully classify as “crisp” into what sane people (judged as such according to Castiel’s admittedly biased standards) would describe as “glacial.” There weren’t enough sweaters in the world, he thought, to make running around in the cold, late into the darkening evening, tolerable, let alone entertaining. He had felt that way even as a child, and now that he was in his last year of high school, he didn’t even have the prospect of a pillowcase full of free candy to ease the irritation.
