Cartoons of the Cosmos

@cartoonsofthecosmos / cartoonsofthecosmos.tumblr.com

Hi there! You've stumbled upon my blog, where I post about various cartoons that I'm into. Right now, that's mainly The Owl House. If you're on this blog, you should have seen all Owl House episodes up to date. Every other cartoon I post about will have a spoiler warning in bold at the top of the post and/or in the tags. Hope you like it here!

Eleven years. ELEVEN YEARS. How could that even be possible? This show seems like it aired yesterday, it's so fresh in my mind. A show this special might never stop feeling like yesterday, because it's a part of me now, a part of who I am in the present. In eleven more years, I hope to still be rewatching. Happy 11 years of Gravity Falls!

Oh, and happy birthday to Stan and Ford - that's today too!

grunkle stan?

How I feel about this character: There’s so much that I love about Stan! He’s a very complicated character who’s mysterious, mischievous, and lovable.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Really no one. I never focused all that much on shipping while watching Gravity Falls. Like I said before, though, Steda does intrigue me.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Stan and Ford. Their relationship is so complicated and at times angsty, but ends in such a wholesome way. I love it.

My unpopular opinion about this character: God, I can't really think of one. The best I can come up with is that Stan was completely justified in demanding that Ford say thank you. Maybe he went a little overboard at the end, but I can honestly see myself doing the same thing.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I would have like to have a little bit of insight into Stan’s deteriorating mental condition as work on the portal. He would have been incredibly sleep deprived and been weighed down by guilt and fear. I know Gravity Falls couldn’t show anything too brutal because of their young audience, but I would have liked to see some of that.

Thanks for the ask!

Character: Eda Clawthorn or Stanley Pines?

Oh gosh, you’re pulling out the big guns. Not only are these both great characters, they’re also very SIMILAR characters, making it all the more difficult to choose. They both are willing to sacrifice everything to save the people they love, and I cry each time I watch either of them make that sacrifice. I guess I’d have to go with Stan. His years of sacrifice really get me, and his relationship with the twins is so wholesome and loving. He’s also really funny and an all-around great character. This one was a very close call, though.

It really does warm my heart that Grunkle Stan withheld himself from swearing around other people. I don't know if he trained himself not to swear just for Mabel and Dipper when he knew that they were coming to town or if he always monitors his language for Soos and Wendy’s sake, but the idea that this grumpy old man took so much care to watch his language in order to not corrupt the innocent youngsters just makes me love Stan all the more.

It makes sense that Stan wouldn’t like Gideon from the start. After all, they are business rivals, and Gideon made a commercial that called Stan a fraud. However, banning everybody who lives in The Mystery Shack from going anywhere near The Tent of Telepathy seemed like a very extreme move for just being business rivals. It honestly seems more like Stan to send Dipper and Mabel to spy on Gideon and get information to ruin his name in retaliation. So why did Stan forbid them from going near him?

Here’s what I think: Stan has seen a lot a weird stuff in Gravity Falls, things that he would have previously thought to be impossible. Although Stan had never met a real psychic before, he couldn’t ignore the possibility that Gideon actually was psychic. And if Gideon had the power to read minds, that could be very bad for Stan. He had major secrets that he needed to keep from his family and everyone else in Gravity Falls, and even if he was 90% sure that Gideon was fake, he couldn’t take any chances, so he forbade Dipper and Mabel from going anywhere near The Tent of Telepathy. Once he had enough information to realize that Gideon had to be a fraud, he lifted the rule.

Looks like someone beat me to Catradora so...Steda. (AKA Grunkle Stan x Eda)

In theory? 8.5/10.

Although I do slightly struggle to get over the age difference here, I must admit how well these two would go together. They are so similar in personality (and, now that I think about it, in plot). They would get into all sorts of shenanigans together, and I think they would love one another’s jokes. So yes, when I picture it in my head, Steda could totally be a thing.

However... I said “in theory” for a reason. Steda mostly started because fans theorized that Eda could be Stan’s ex-wife. I’m sorry to disappoint y’all, but we already know the name of Stan’s ex-wife, and it isn’t Eda.

Once decoded, a cryptogram from the Gravity Falls episode Roadside Attraction reads:

Carla McCorkle returned all his flowersMarilyn divorced him after only six hoursBeatrice slapped him for being a cadOld Goldie’s the best girlfriend Stan ever had

Unless Eda was using a fake name, Stan’s ex-wife is someone named Marilyn, not Eda. Also in Roadside Attraction, Stan specifically says he’s been divorced once, meaning he does not have more than one ex-wife.

For that reason, I strayed away from Steda for a long time. I couldn’t stop myself from thinking that it was factually inaccurate. But thinking about it now, if  we move past the ex-wife thing and just imagine Stan and Eda meeting for the first time, then yeah, I kinda ship it.

Thanks for the ask!

@cipherchild was it? I didn’t know that. When/where was it confirmed? This could definitely change my point of view on Eda being Stan’s ex.
