I know you’ve probably done her before but Amity!

Avatar

I don’t think I’ve done her yet!

How I feel about this character: Amity’s my favorite character from The Owl House. She’s such an interesting character and there’s so many interesting paths the writers could take with her in upcoming seasons.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Hm, I’m a pretty big fan of Boschamity. They just have this undeniable chemistry.

I’m kidding. It’s Luz. We all know it’s Luz.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: That’s hard. It makes me sad to say it, but Amity doesn’t really have many friends at the moment. She’s got Luz, but she’s not really close to Willow or Gus yet. So, I don’t have a non-romantic OTP for Amity at the moment. Ask me again after season 2 has started.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I much prefer Amity’s current character design over her beta design. I think the final designs are better than the betas for all of the characters, but I feel that way about Amity’s in particular.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I want an episode where the main focus is on Amity's life at home. I am so desperate for more information about that, and I would love to get a full episode on it as opposed to getting small hints here and there in other episodes. Of course, getting small hints for a while is fine, I just hope they lead up to a full episode.

Thanks for the ask!

I agree with all of this

Maybe we could have another body swap episode where Luz and Amity switch places? That way we could see Amity's home life from Luz's perspective, and we could have Amity experience a more loving home life for awhile (and also being awkward because she's in her crush's body).

I’m generally not a big fan of body swap episodes, but I actually love this idea. It would be such a shocking experience for both of them; Amity has never experienced parental-like love and care before, and Luz has never been mistreated by her parents. An episode like this would HURT, and it would be huge turning point for Amity, who I don’t think fully realizes yet that the treatment she gets from her parents is NOT normal and NOT okay.

I don’t think there’s any chance this will happen, because there was already a body swap episode, but I wish they writers had scrapped that episode and written this one instead. If nothing else, this could be an incredible fanfic.

I'd love to see Willow's Dads react to Her and Amity's Reconciliation.

Avatar

I think they’ll be kinda pissed! I have to imagine that after Amity kicked Willow out of the party when they were little kids, Willow went home and cried to her dads. I can almost see a scene where they’re trying to console their daughter while also exchanging looks over her shoulder expressing their anger over what Amity did. In my opinion, there was also a little bit of “I told you so” in their minds. The Blights parents were probably jerks to Willow’s dads growing up (perhaps they still are as adults), and they might have been worried when Willow befriended the Blights’ young daughter. They would have been sympathetic when Amity abandoned Willow, but I don’t think they would have been very surprised.

Amity and Willow reconciling, though? THAT will come as a surprise. Willow was clearly very upset about what Amity did. It’s clear up through Understanding Willow that Willow still dwells on it years later. And I get it - I’ve been through similar stuff, and it really does eat at you! I think that Willow’s dads will not only be surprised, but also nervous that Amity will hurt Willow again. We don’t know much about them yet, but I picture them as protective, and they’re very angry that someone hurt their daughter like that. In fact, I think they’ll have a harder time forgiving Amity than Willow will! They might be cold towards Amity, or ask Willow if she’s sure she can trust Amity, or just discuss their fears in private, but I think that Amity will have to work to gain their trust.

I would love to see this play in out in a season 2 episode. I’m not sure if it will or not, but either way I’m confident that we’ll get to see some more of Willow’s dads in the next season. Thanks for the ask!

I think as soon as the Blight parents are revealed and the show makes them even the TINIEST sliver redeemable then everyone is gonna flip so quick from hating them to loving them like with lilith lmaooo

It’s something I worry about, honestly. I’m worried about the fans flipping, sure, but I’m more worried about the show itself redeeming one or both them.

For the most part, I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised at the fandom’s response to the Blight parents. People have had a lot of sympathy for Amity and have taken the whole thing very seriously. I didn’t expect people to take Amity’s situation as a joke, exactly, but there are certain parts of her situation that remind me very much of parts of my own situation, and let’s just say I didn't think I would be taken very seriously if I spoke out about them.

But that didn’t happen! The fandom actually took it really seriously! And it made me super happy! It still does! It has made me feel a lot differently about my own situation! The Owl House has had a major effect on me as a person in more ways than one! But that’s a whole other can of worms. The point is, so far, this part of the fandom has been very pleasantly surprising.

Of course, that’s not true 100% of the time. I actually think that the scenario that you presented, a scenario where something makes the Blights the tiniest bit redeemable and people instantly like them, has already started to happen. Dana Terrace implied in her AMA that Alador was a very interesting character to write, and instantly people began to think/theorize/headcanon that Alador is actually an okay person and Odalia is the abusive asshole. Now, headcanon what you want, and I mean no harm to those who do have that headcanon, but I cannot express how strongly I disagree. I’m all for interesting villains, but a parent who watches their spouse abuse their children and says nothing is still an abuser and a horrible person in my opinion.

I honestly don't think there's much of anything that could make me forgive the Blight parents. Perhaps I’m biased, but I have so little sympathy for abusers, especially parents who abuse their children. What will happen in the fandom, I can't say. I definitely think some people will forgive at least Alador; like I said, I think some people already have. However, I definitely think there are others in the fandom like me who aren’t likely to forgive them no matter what. I don’t know, maybe that’s wishful thinking.

However, I do have another fear; that the show will attempt to redeem Alador or potentially both Blight parents. Like I said, I'm all for interesting villains, but Dana’s comments and all of the fan content redeeming Alador did scare me a little bit. Everything that I said earlier, about feeling validated in my own experiences by Amity’s experiences? I think that feeling will go away if the Blight parents are forgiven, unless there’s a REALLY good reason. It would really be a punch in the gut. Every time I see content where one or both of the parents is portrayed as a good person, I can’t help but feel anxious about the possibility that the show will take the same route. I sincerely hope they don’t.

Thanks for the ask! I apologize that it took me a while to answer, I wanted to make sure I said all of this correctly.

Based off of all the fanart I’ve seen, I feel like the fandom has collectively decided what the Blight parents look like, despite us having never actually seen them. If their faces are revealed to be completely different than how we’ve been picturing, chaos will reign.

YO I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING

So remember when Dana did 2 lies and a truth for season 2? And I predicted that the truth was that Camila was going to beat someone up?

What if Camila beats up one of the Blight parents after seeing how they treat Amity?

that would make my fucking YEAR

Owltober Day 18: Oracle

I know that there is still some disagreement in the fandom as to what coven Odalia is in based on this photo. However, to me it looks like Alador’s uniform is definitely pink, meaning he’s in abomination, and Odalia’s uniform is intentionally colored a darker shade than Alador’s, meaning that she is in the purple track, which is Oracle.

If I’m right and Odalia is in the Oracle Coven, that could be VERY BAD. We still don’t know that much about the Oracle Coven, but in The First Day we saw that oracle magic can be used to look into someone’s future. If Odalia has been using her oracle magic throughout the series so far, then it’s possible that she knows everything Amity is hiding and has been waiting for the right moment to act. I don’t think Amity told her parents that she befriended the human, or that she rekindled her relationship with Willow, or that she cut ties with her former “friends.” But what if Odalia already knows all that, and just hasn’t let Amity know yet? It would be just like Odalia to spy on her children in their day-to-day lives. If she’s been watching, she’s probably been getting progressively angrier as Amity strays farther and farther from the person her parents want her to be. All that anger might one day release itself in the form of Odalia doing something horrible to Amity, Willow, Luz, or all three.

I’m not sure if I’m quite ready to accept this theory yet, because honestly, it scares the shit out of me. But regardless, I think Odalia is in the Oracle Coven, and I think that could be very bad for our protagonists.

Every one of the lines from Amity’s diary is kinda heartbreaking in one way or another, but the one that hurts the most for me is “I don't wanna come off as cruel. I just can't show weakness.” The first time I watched that, I thought it was just Amity being careful to maintain her reputation, but no. Amity has probably been given several lectures on how she isn’t allowed to show weakness of any kind. Being nice to Luz is literally against her parent’s rules. Damn it, Amity needs a hug.

Owltober Day 2: Least Favorite Character(s)

I had two ideas for characters to do for today. I couldn’t choose which one to do, so I decided, hey, why not both.

Character 1: Odalia Blight

Ah, the Blight parents. The true villains of TOH. Even from the little we know about them, I already hate both of them, especially Odalia, with a passion. They have thoroughly messed up Amity and her life. They canonically emotionally abuse her, and like I talked about briefly in another post, I think there is evidence of physical abuse as well. Gah... I am not a violent person, but I would punch Odalia in the face without a second thought. And there is no evidence Alador is any better.

Fun fact: while most of the fandom was still wondering if Amity dyed her hair because of Azura or to look like her siblings, I theorized that Amity was forced to dye her hair by her parents as soon as I knew they were jerks (Understanding Willow). By that point I had no idea which parent was doing it, but I definitely thought it was one of them. But, as I’ve mentioned before, my theories are almost NEVER right, and I was absolutely shocked when it was confirmed. I had already disliked the Blight parents at that point, but that was probably when my hatred for them skyrocketed. I mean, who would do that to anyone, let alone their own child?

Point is, the Blight parents are assholes. Right now, I hate Odalia more because she's the one who did the hair thing, but maybe Alador is worse, who knows. I personally hope that Amity decides to cut them off entirely.

Character 2: The Bat Queen

The Bat Queen just makes me... uncomfortable. I feel uncomfortable whenever she’s onscreen. I don’t know exactly what it is about her, but there is something about her that just makes me feel uneasy. Maybe it’s her appearance, or her voice, or the fact that she’s basically a face with legs and wings. And what’s more, it’s become obvious that she does have sort of role to play in the larger story of The Owl House. I wish I could convince myself that I won’t have to see her in any more, but I can’t. No matter what I do or say, she’s gonna be back. She has a cryptic backstory that we need to learn more about.

As far as Bat Queen theories, I would like to know why she is called “queen.” Is she actually a queen of some sort? If not, how did she get the title? I know it’s a semi-common theory that the Bat Queen was the Titan’s palisman, but I don’t really believe that. For one thing, it seems like too obvious an explanation, and it also doesn’t really seem to make sense proportions-wise. Let’s say the Bat Queen is, I don’t know, 100 times Owlbert’s size. The Titan is way, way more than 100 times Eda’s size. The Bat Queen would be a really tiny palisman for the Titan. Her royal title makes me wonder is she belonged to some sort of monarch or authority figure instead. I’m really not sure, though. I don’t think she belonged to anyone we’ve met so far. She’d be way too big for any of the characters. This might not be the most well thought out theory, but I frankly don’t wanna spend any more time thinking about the Bat Queen than I absolutely have to. She freaks me out.

I’ve made a lot of angsty Amity posts recently, so have a compilation of Amity looking adorably happy while reading to kids. She deserves to be happy.

Taking these pictures made me think of a cute theory: what if Amity just really likes reading to kids, so she told her parents that it gave her extra credit while it actually didn’t? There’s no way her parents would let her just read books to children because she wanted to, so she had to make up a lie about getting extra points. For an extra credit assignment, she seems to be having a lot of fun.

After Luz says “I'm not a witch” in Covention, Amity’s face instantly says “oh no, what did I just do?” It’s telling right there that she doesn’t really want to be mean, she’s just trained to act that way.

The same thing happens after “just leave me alone!” in lost in language. It’s clear that Amity isn’t intending to be a bully. She’s flustered and she “can’t show weakness” and she’s acting the way she’s been taught to act.

If I had been paying attention to these little details from the first time I watched the series, I would’ve realized earlier that Amity was never actually a bully. She feels bad whenever she hurts someone’s feelings. She’s just got it drilled it in to her mind that showing compassion or kindness means showing weakness. All she needed to do was unlearn that idea.

Avatar

Remember when Amity ran off after Eda caught her cheating during the witches’ duel? At first, I thought she had run off crying, but when I looked at the picture of her curled up against the wall again, I realized she isn’t crying. She doesn’t even look sad. She just looks exhausted.

She looks like she could almost fall asleep. She’s just so tired of being taken advantage of. She always has be on her best behavior, and her best always has to be better than everyone else’s best. Her parents use her to get more attention and clout for the family name. And now Lilith, who she actually admired, just used Amity to make herself look like a better teacher, with no regard whatsoever to Amity’s wellbeing. Amity has been taken advantage of so many times that she isn’t even that sad about it anymore. She’s just so, so tired of it.

amity’s diary’s line “i wish i had somewhere to go” just... punched me in the gut. i imagine that amity wrote that entry after something rough happened to her, probably involving her parents, and she just felt so fucking trapped. i don’t have anything near amity’s home life, and i’ve absolutely felt that way before. my heart just aches thinking about how she must have felt writing that.

I think (and hope) that the Blight parents will end up being homophobic coded. I kinda headcanon them as being homophobes, but I also think that homophobia isn't a thing on the Boiling Isles. For those of you have seen SVTFOE, you know that although there is no actual racism in the show, there’s a major plotline that serves as an extended metaphor for systemic racism. I want them to do the same kind of thing with the Blight parents. They’ll say that Amity can’t date Luz because she’s a human, or because she lives at the Owl House, or because she can’t do magic, but it will all be a metaphor for homophobia. I think that would be a great way to address homophobia in the show while still maintaining the accepting atmosphere of the Isles.

I initially thought that Blight was a family name on Alador’s side, but now that I think about it, I get the sense that the name more likely came from Odalia’s side. Some of this is based upon fan theories that Odalia is the worse parent of the two, but it also fits in with the green hair thing. I’ve imagined that having green hair is a staple of being a Blight, which means that Odalia is the one with the Blight family blood.

Also, it was a bad assumption on my part to think that the Boiling Isles has the same old-fashioned “take the man’s name” we have on Earth. Given what we’ve already seen of how progressive the Isles are, I bet they just have a “take whichever name you like” norm. Of course, Odalia and Alador would take the name Blight because of the power associated with it. I bet if Amity gets married she’ll lose the name in a heartbeat.
