I recognize that this may be a small stretch, but the way that the mud covers Hunter’s head bears a resemblance to his longer hair before he cuts it off. Hunter is also the only one who is unable to enjoy playing in the rain. I think this is representative of his inability to escape his constant anxiety over being a grimwalker. While everyone else is laughing and having fun, Hunter’s world is filled with reminders of the man he is a copy of. He can change his appearance, but he’ll never be able to escape who he came from. And it’s weighing on him, constantly.
In Any Sport in a Storm, Darius tries to push Hunter to start thinking independently and stop following the emperor's orders blindly. That’s without a doubt a good thing, and we were all happy for Hunter when he started to think more carefully about which orders he should be following. But...
We have to assume that Darius knows that when Golden Guards start to stray from Belos’ plans, they die. Darius must have spent a long time grappling with whether to let Hunter keep living a life of blind obedience in order to keep him alive or give him a bit of freedom, knowing it could mean that this kid, this sixteen-year-old kid, could be killed. Did Darius believe that Hunter would be able to find a way to escape from Belos alive? Did he decide that having Hunter on the side of the rebellion was so important that it was worth risking his life? Or did he think that Hunter deserved to learn the truth and taste some freedom, even if it ended up only being for a brief period of time before Belos found out and... put an end to it?
I don’t know. But man, what a hard decision to make.
Once the fight is over and Hunter is free from Belos’ grasp, I want to watch him learn how to be a kid. I want to watch his confusion and anxiety as he goes to school and lives in a house for the first time. I want to see him keeping his guard up for a while and then slowly letting it down as he learns that rest of the world isn’t out to get him. I want to watch a drowsy Eda explain to him what sleeping in is after he woke her up at 6 am, confused about why no one else was awake. I want to watch his face light up when he tries a pancake. Watching someone who’s had to be on their toes for so many years learn to relax and fun is just the right blend of angst and fluff. And he deserves it, damn it! I know we’re not gonna have a lot of time after Belos is defeated until the story has to end, but I really hope the show manages to squeeze a little of this wholesomeness in.
Other people have cleverly pointed out how Hunter’s face paint resembles the green scar on Belos’ face and how this could be foreshadowing, so I’m not gonna talk about that. Instead, I want to examine why Hunter chose to look like Belos here. Hunter presumably chose his own face paint design, and it’s easy to imagine that he purposefully make it resemble Belos’ scar. This isn’t shocking or anything, as Hunter is clearly a big fan of Belos at this point in time, but I find the fact that Hunter’s face paint resembles the scar specifically and not another one of Belos’ attributes to be interesting.
Hunter is not emulating a positive trait of his uncle’s here. He’s imitating Belos’ scar, which presumably comes from his curse/illness, something which causes Belos great pain. I think this is evidence of just how much Hunter worships Belos. When someone begins to idolize even the negative attributes of a leader, you can see just how high of a pedestal they place their idol upon. At least before he had the conversation with Darius later in the episode, Hunter viewed Belos as near perfect and wanted to emulate him in his entirety, even the negative things about him. Hunter has made progress, but it’ll take a lot more to undo this level of indoctrination.
That episode set a great example for all shows about how an episode can be filler-y but not static. There were things in there that were important to the plot, but the main storylines (Willow starting a club, Amity and Luz wanting to find out who the author of the Azura books is, Hunter trying to find new recruits) had little to no impact on the overarching plot of the show. However, this episode was still without a doubt important, providing us with insight into several characters and setting up potential future storylines while taking the viewer on a fun and lower-stakes ride. It had a wonderful late season 1 vibe while still progressing the story forward. That was a stellar episode.
I HAD a dream last night where amity was the golden guard and she and luz had several fights where she didn't take off her mask (the golden guard was introduced from the beginning of the series in this dream) so luz didn’t know who she was and throughout all of these fights luz was trying to convince amity that she was fighting on the wrong side and amity was slowly falling for luz and it was sooo good. where’s the fanfic where’s the au where’s the spinoff series
Huntlow. Extremely determined but kind person who could kill god and overworked and sleepless person who needs therapy is a top tier ship dynamic in my opinion. I typically don't ship characters who have not met in cannon but @jess-the-vampire's AU where Hunter is the human stumbling into the isles has given me enough reason to think they could work. Please check them out they do amazing art and The Reverse of Feathers and Mud AU is one of the best AUs i have ever seen. I want to say more but I don't want to spoil it so please go look it's so cool!
Owltober 2021 Day 21: Theory/prediction you DO think is true but you wish it wasn't?
That Belos is going to kill Rascal, and in front of Hunter. It's just... It's a palisman living in the castle of a man who eats them for breakfast. and with Belos's 'prodigy' so the likelihood of him being discovered is a lot more then say if Steve was keeping one.
And the thing is, if or when it does happen it is either going to be the turning point for Hunter where runs away finally seeing Belos for the Abusive Manipulator he is or it's going to be the point of no return where he gives up everything for Belos and turns into a full blown villain.
It just feels like if Rascal survives it's inevitable that Hunter will go full team Owl House and while I want that I feel like nothing but Belos doing something unforgivable to Hunter is going to make him realize his Uncle doesn't care and can't be helped,or completely make Hunter shut down emotionally.
Either way it just seems likely to me even if I REALLY don't like it.
That Eda is Hunter's mom, Or Hunter is a Clawthrone in some way. There isn't much evidence for it aside from Hunter and her both going "BYYYYEEEEE!" and the whole attack from behind their enemy thing
,But also Hunter has a bird Palisman, Dana did say that bird motifs and palismans are generally a clawthorne thing which is true as far as we have seen since every bird palisman aside from Rascal is bonded to a confirmed Clawthorne
I also just like long lost child stories, Also can you imagine Hunter realizing he almost threw his mother and adoptive sister into the boiling sea, More Angst for Hunter as always plus more Eda mothering if this has any chance of being true.
I just think it's a fun idea, and I'd certainly read a story exploring it.
My fav theories are any theories relating to Belos, the Wittebanes, and Hunter.
Why the heck would Belos be so obsessed with the portal if he wasn't a human? I KNOW that he is Phillip Wittebane. I just know it. Also, remember how in the first episode of season 1 the door could only be opened by a human? Why the heck would they do that if there wasn't a human who could visit that any day? BECAUSE BELOS CAN OPEN IT.
Belos' hair looks exactly like Phillip's. Bitch couldn't even get a haircut. Same damn ponytail!!!
Another theory is that Hunter is the grimwalker and that Belos/Phillip made him to look like his brother. The other Wittebane.
How I feel about this character: I like Hunter’s character a lot. He’s compelling and complicated, and I’ve been enjoying all the scenes that he’s in. More about why I like him so much here.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: No one at the moment.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Luz and Hunter are an awesome pair, but I like Amity and Hunter even more. I think they could really connect over their pasts and have a sibling-like relationship.
My unpopular opinion about this character: Um... I’m struggling to think of one. A week ago, I would have said my unpopular opinion is that I don’t think Hunter is a clone of Belos, but I think most of the fandom abandoned that theory after Yesterday’s Lie.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I’m sure that this will happen at some point, but I really want to know how Hunter got both of his scars. Frankly, I want a whole episode dedicated to exploring his backstory.
My OTP: Like I said, none at the moment. Subject to change, though.
My cross over ship: Interaction between Wirt from Over the Garden Wall and Hunter would be great. I’m imagining platonic interaction, though, not a ship.
A headcanon fact: He writes music in his spare time and thinks bard magic is one of the coolest types.
How I feel about this character: I still feel like Edric did some mean things in season 1 and has not had any redemption. I find it hard to like him after the events of Lost in Language, and I would really like to see him grow as a person, but he just hasn’t yet.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Edric’s mysterious they/them pronoun using date. Maybe Hunter as well, but I have yet to really get into that ship.

My unpopular opinion about this character: Edric has been cruel and selfish, and while I will admit he isn’t always a jerk, he has not shown himself to be a very good person.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I hope the show acknowledges the wrong things that Edric has done and has him improve as a person, as opposed to pretending as if he was never mean, which I fear they may do.

What are your thoughts on the Hunter being a grimwalker theory? Also, what/who do you think Belos is? At this point my best guess is that Belos is Philip who is using magic to keep himself alive but obviously it's taking a toll. His ears are a lot smaller which makes me think he just cut them to make them appear witch like. I would love to hear what you think about it
Here's what I think: Hunter was, somehow, created by Belos using instructions found in that book. The image in the book resembles Hunter too closely in regards to his eyes and nose for me to believe that the entry doesn't refer to him. Hunter is most likely something called a Grimwalker, which is a term I’d never heard before this episode. However, it is interesting to me that Hunter was supposed to kill a selkidomus for an unknown reason in episode 2.1, and the Galdorstones appeared to be undisturbed previous to episode 2.5, and selkidomus scales and galdorstones are both ingredients to make a Grimwalker. A part of me thinks that Hunter is not a Grimwalker, the left and right pages of the open book are two different entries, and a Grimwalker is something that Belos is still trying to make. Either way, I believe that Hunter was artificially created by Belos, based off of the left page. I’m just unsure if he’s a Grimwalker, whatever that means.
I don’t currently believe the theory that some of the fandom holds that says that Hunter is a clone of Belos. It’s an interesting theory for sure, but they just don’t resemble each other enough. They have the same hair color and similar ears, but different colored eyes, different eye shapes, different noses, and different colored eyebrows. They have matching slits in their ears, but I can’t see how that could be genetic. Of course, one is much older than the other, but I’m still not buying it.
As for who Belos is, I’m still quite unsure. I talked here about how I think Belos is too young-looking to be Philip, who would at this point have to be about 400 years old. I either think Belos is a descendant of Philip or a follower of Philip who is not related by blood. To your point about the ears, they’re definitely smaller than any witch’s ears we've seen. Heck, they're smaller than Luz’s ears when compared to head size, and Luz is 100% human. I think Belos is at most 25% witch, 75% human. Maybe he’s entirely human and cut his ears like you suggested. If you imagine his ear without the slit in it, it’s still pointy-looking, but it could reasonably be the ear of a pointy-eared human. Even if Belos is fully human, though, I’m still doubtful that he’s Philip. Either he is Philip’s distant relative, or he is patterning himself after Philip.
