I really like the cinematography for the night waterfront scene! The emphasis on Frank walking towards Karen and the way they use close ups. A really neat shot as well is the one when Frank is looking into Karen's eye/pleading seconds before the kiss; it's an upwards angle, favoring Karen. It makes Frank look a bit smaller (he's already bowing a bit before her) and I think it really shows how he's at her mercy in that moment. His feelings for her give him this strength but also this weakness.

YES TO ALL OF THIS. I remember when we first got stills from this scene a lot of us were freaking out because the whole set-up, the bridge and the lights and everything made it look like something straight out of a rom-com hahaha. And we got our first Kastle kiss from this scene, mixed with some delicious angst, soooooo I’d say we were all pretty on-point. :)

I know absolutely nothing about cinematography but I absolutely think that emphasis on certain angles and close-ups was done intentionally. I also really love the shot right after he tells her about Frank Jr. painting the marine on the wall, where he watches her walk past him and then turns to look at her. He’s opened up to her again and, just as you said, he’s totally at her mercy while he waits to see how she’ll respond. And fabulous observation about the shot right before the kiss - I went and re-watched (NOT for the first time today I’m slightly ashamed to admit hahaha) and it totally does look like he’s a bit smaller. Such a neat way to visually communicate everything going on in that moment. :)

(Also, if you’re looking for more Punisher cinematography meta, @shipsabound did a really lovely analysis of the waterfront scene in 1x02 here, so definitely check that out if you haven’t! Unless you ARE shipsabound *side eye* hahaha)

DAW once referred to Karen as trouble, and we know that Karen needs to find the truth, with that paired with Frank's need for war, do you think thats why they connect so well? They have such a tenacity and stubbornness when they want something, but do you think in the end thats their downfall? Does it make them happy or just gives them a purpose? Hopefully this makes sense, its a ramble, I'm sorry!

Ooooo very interesting questions, and they make perfect sense! I definitely think that Frank and Karen are both ruthless in their own way and their stubbornness/tenacity has a lot to do with that. They will fight for what they want with everything that have which, like you said, is good and bad. I think the problem is that neither of them know when to stop and will push themselves to dangerous limits. In the waterfront scene we could see Karen getting fired up about the Kandahar story - we’ll let the truth hang them - and it’s only after Frank literally begs her to let it go that she backs down.

I’ll be the first to admit that I live for these two going to extreme lengths to protect each other - Karen defending Frank over the radio, Frank demanding that Micro locate Lewis and insiting that Karen is his family, Frank TAKING A BULLET FOR KAREN, GETTING SHOT IN THE HEAD (AGAIN), DISLOCATING AN ARM, AND THROWING HIMSELF DOWN A MILLION FLIGHTS OF STAIRS TO GET TO KAREN WHEN LEWIS HAD HER, Karen reciprocating in the best way possible by deivising that plan to help him escape, the list is endless hahaha. HOWEVER, I definitely don’t think this kind of behavior is sustainable and if their relationship progresses past TP I’m certain we will continue to see them risking their lives/potentially getting very hurt in order to protect each other. Especially if (when?) Fisk ever finds out that Karen killed Wesley, we all know he’s going to come after her in a big way and we all know how CALM AND COLLECTED Frank is when someone is threatening Karen’s life XD

*sigh* These two need a vacation hahahaha.

What do you think was going through Karen's mind when Frank gave her that kiss on the cheek? She leans in when he leans but then she keeps looking down. Then she takes a sharp inhale and freezes once his lips are on hers. She seems so overwhelmed.

She’s definitely overwhelmed, anon. Overwhelmed, shocked, confused, probably a mixture of several different emotions. Quite honestly that was my reaction when we first got that clip. I mean, I was over the moon elated but also sort of in a state of disbelief? Frank ‘I’m already dead’ Castle giving Karen Page a kiss on the cheek? @favrielle and I were having a conversation about how this show literally turned canon on its head and even though it’s wonderful NOTHING MAKES SENSE ANYMORE.

By this point in the series Karen has seen glimpses of soft!Frank (”okay?” “okay.” “when am I gonna see you?” “you want to?”) but I don’t think she realizes just how much he actually cares about her until this moment. And this actually brings me to something I’ve been thinking about for awhile, something that’s probably an unpopular opinion but does relate to this ask, so I’m going to go slightly off topic here. I promise I’ll bring it back around!

Karen has devoted a lot of time/energy to Frank - researching his case, digging into what happened with his family, his trial, continuing to dig into his story after his “death” at the docks, helping him find Micro - and I’m not saying that she was coerced into any of this, or that she didn’t want to help him out. Nor am I trying to imply that Frank hasn’t reciprocated and demonstrated that he respects and admires and trusts her. I sometimes have a hard time taking my shipper goggles off but if I’m being objective, their relationship/dynamic just feels a bit off balance to me in that Frank has perhaps benefited from it more than Karen.

Take the bit in the waterfront scene where Frank is talking about Frank Jr. painting the marine on the wall. Obviously this is a very emotional moment and a possible call-back to that heart-wrenching graveyard scene in DDS2, and I really do love and appreciate the fact that Frank feels comfortable and safe enough around Karen to share stories like this with her. That being said, I can’t help feeling a bit disappointed that Karen herself has yet to have one of these moments, where she’s finally able to confide in someone, share her deepest darkest secrets with someone who understands. Our girl has been through hell and back since moving to the city and she’s had to go through most of it alone, shouldering the guilt and the shame and the weight of all these secrets by herself. Frank’s my boy, don’t get me wrong, but I love Karen Page with all my heart and just want her to have all the love and emotional support she herself has given on so many occasions.

My point in bringing this all up is that the waterfront meeting, for me, symbolizes a turning point of sorts for these two. Frank is asking, begging for her to let this go - a contrast to other times when he’s done the opposite, asking Karen for help and often relying on it. He cares more about her, her life and her safety, than exposing the truth about Kandahar and that is huge. I think he leans in and kisses her because he’s run out of words and this is the only way he can express to her exactly what he’s feeling. And I think that’s what stuns her and leaves her frozen. It’s a side of Frank that she (and we the audience) haven’t really seen before, at least not to this extent. He’s not here for himself in this scene, he’s here for Karen. I cannot let that happen.

Woooooo this got long! I’m not sure any of this makes sense and I’m sorry for the tangent in the middle - this is all just my opinion and I am still 100% certifiable Kastle trash through and through. If you, dear anon, or anyone else has any additional thoughts I would love to hear them! Thanks so much for sending this in. :)

I've been thinking about the "I am home" line and I keep wondering what exactly made Frank choose life over death (Maria's extended hand). Does he feel he belongs to the darkness forever? That killing is his new home? Does a part of him feel like he's supposed to live because there are people he loves that he wants to protect? That line is so bittersweet. Thoughts?

Sorry this took me awhile to get to, anon. I needed to process this one a bit before attempting to answer. :)

So to start off, this scene destroyed me (at this point I was at hour 12 of my binge BAD IDEA FOLKS, DON’T TRY IT AT HOME so my emotional state was interesting to say the least). I was actually a bit shocked when he pulled away, but after thinking about it and re-watching I have a few thoughts about why he did this and why it makes sense.

Frank goes through quite the evolution in this show. At the beginning he’s in full Punisher mode, and after he “avenges” his family’s murders we see him stuck in this limbo of sorts, having completed his crusade but unable to move forward. In my opinion, that first Punisher we see isn’t the same one we see at the end with Rawlins and Billy. Maybe they have the same goal but where Frank is isolated and alone in the beginning of the show, he now has a constellation of people around him, people who care about him or are invested in his story (Micro, Curtis, Karen, the Liebermans, Dinah).

I think you’re onto something with the “feels like he’s supposed to live to protect the ones he loves” theory. An argument could be made that before the events of the series, and even during, Frank doesn’t place a lot of value on his own life. He has a mission and he will do anything to see it through but I think he always knows (and possibly hopes?) that it will end in his death. I think beginning-of-show Frank/Punisher would have taken Maria’s hand and followed her into death without a second thought. Now, though, he has something else to live for outside the rage and grief and trauma that have fueled him forward thus far. And the fact that we actually see Frank taking steps towards healing and moving forward, even though the prospect clearly terrifies him, is amazing and beyond any expectations I had for the character. The series ends on such a hopeful note and sends a beautiful message to people who are struggling in any way/shape/form - there can be an after for you if you want it and you don’t have to find it alone.

let's talk about people (ok, frank) calling micro "spook"

I love this! I actually think it’s a perfect description of Micro altogether. If we look at the meaning of the word, we get two options: ghost, or undercover agent/spy. Micro is both

He’s a ghost in this world, thought dead by all who know and love him, and he is the remote watcher who sometimes influences things as though he’s orchestrating something from beyond the grave. Frank may have initially shown up at the Lieberman house to rattle Micro, but it’s clear in the rest of the show that Micro directs Frank into his family’s path as though Frank is a substitute for the role that Micro used to have within that family unit. Frank is almost acting on Micro’s orders at one point, fueled by flat-out “I won’t work with you if you don’t do this for me”-statements, and Micro watches him interact with Sarah and the kids from that safe distance all the while. He only physically lingers in their vicinity himself when he perceives a threat to Sarah and when his son has expressed a degree of suicidal ideation. Even then, he doesn’t interact. He wants to be there for them, but he is nothing more than a ghost in their lives.

He’s a ghost to his own family in a way that makes him tangible and elusive all at once. I was struck by the fact that Sarah has kept all the photos of him out on display and by how vibrantly she defends him to Frank when Frank makes a negative comment about her husband. She breathes life into David, into that life Micro used to have before all of this, and he hears her do it but never steps back into her arms until he has done what he needed to do. I don’t know how many of you have realised yet how utterly ruthless Micro can be, but please watch episode 12 again and focus on him. Focus on how he seems to be a jittery bundle of nerves, but then keeps his cool even when Sarah’s screaming over him and his already troubled son is there to watch him die all over again. Focus on how he lets Homeland put him in a body bag and how in control he remains of the situation within that building at all times. This is the man who faked his own death not once but twice for what he believes is the greater good, no matter how much damage it does to the people he loves, no matter how long it takes until his job is done. This is the man who used to believe in the system and then stepped out of the system to become its vengeful spirit and clear conscience instead.

Micro is fucking dangerous, and that leads us to the other meaning of ‘spook’. What I love about Marvel is their everlasting attention to detail, and this primarily reflects in their book choices for characters. I noted one book in Iron Fist that served as characterisation for particular characters, and in The Punisher we get more than one. One of the standouts to me is the one we see on the pile next to Frank in Micro’s hideout that’s visible in one of the promo pictures that was released pre-Punisher, which is the book Ghost In The Wires that details a real-life cat-and-mouse game between a hacker and the FBI. It’s such a blatant reference to Micro’s own circumstances and again draws on that ghost-comparison for him. However, Micro’s more than just an elusive hacker who’s on the run and presumed dead. He’s an NSA analist who specialises in reading human behaviour. Look at how he initially plays that cat-and-mouse game with Frank so well that Frank is left admitting to Karen that Micro scares the shit out of him. Look at how he manipulates Frank so skillfully that he’s able to get the upper hand in their interactions despite him being the one who’s naked and tied to a chair. Look at how he doesn’t reciprocate that with Frank by putting Frank in the same position Frank put Micro in, but how he is gentle in his persuasions to get Frank on his side instead. He’s all softness with steel lurking underneath it and he knows precisely what to do and say to manipulate someone into doing things his way.

While not an undercover agent or spy in the typical sense of the government-sanctioned-and-approved way, Micro utilises a lot of the tactics that are used by spies and agents in deep cover situations. He wields them so expertly that they are second nature to him and he proceeds to scare even the Punisher with how much he sees/knows. Frank comes to know Micro gradually and forms an understanding with him, but in the earliest episodes Frank does still seem pretty rattled about Micro while simultaneously trying to wrap his head around why Micro can just sit there and watch his family go through hell because of him. There’s something very cold about Micro, despite how kind and soft-hearted he can also be, and that is illustrated to perfection in how he maintains ‘being a ghost’ even in the face of grave danger and grief/loss. He eludes Rawlins and his men until the last moment, and even the information they need is kept from them by Micro’s efforts to the point where even another hacker can’t crack what he’s done to his systems. Micro shocks Madani when he types in her password and goes to work, too – not to mention the way he acted in his interview with her. He really is the perfect spy, the elusive undercover agent, and the word ‘spook’ should be his moniker from here on out. Frank is the first to recognise that, but won’t be the last..

The amount of steel that’s hidden inside Micro is probably my fave thing about him. He may be a soft trash panda who’ll do anything for his wife and kids, but he runs circles around everybody with that mind of his and takes control of situations so fluidly that you hardly notice him doing it. He reads people as though they’re an open book. He consistently one-ups Frank until he’s assured of Frank aligning himself with him, and he takes Madani to task like whoa in the latter half of the season. He’s loyal to those individuals he trusts, but he can and will undermine the system if he has to. He sees the mission through in an absolutely brutal way, too – faking his own death a second time, again in front of his wife, with his son there to see it – and puts his own moral code before anything else on this planet.

As much as he is the comic relief we all needed in this show, he’s also one of the most cutthroat characters in it. We need to recognise that Micro’s greatest asset is his mind and that he will utilise that intelligence any way he deems necessary. (And, as much as it kills me to say it.. I don’t think he is going to be capable of fully going back to civilian life. We’re given the impression that he can just return to his family and have a good life, and with the door closing it feels like a definite “goodbye” to the Liebermans, but.. well.. I’m not convinced that Micro is capable of assimilating back into that family routine.)

FRANK CASTLE x MARIA CASTLE SEX SCENE. LET’S DISCUSS YEAH?

a frank castle sex scene was something i hoped for but never expected to get!! and it was with maria with is just the ultimate bonus icing on the cake!

so let’s get what we know out of the way. frank and maria were together for 3 months when she got pregnant, then sometime not too long after that - they got married. (again i don’t think it was one of those “omg i’m pregnant we have to get married” i think it was “we love each other and since we have a baby coming we might as well get married” i talked a little about that here). so they only had three months of time together just them two. their marriage started with lisa so she’s always been a part of their married life.

we don’t know much about maria, other than what we’ve seen in little dreams and flashbacks. most of which are from frank’s perspective. but what we do know is that maria owned frank’s ass. i mean come on. he blushed the first time they met. he talks about how any time he saw he dancing he was DONE for. frank castle had the heart eyes for maria bad.

since frank was in the marines when he was with maria, their relationship would’ve had to balance parenthood and his absence overseas for their entire marriage. so my thought is that sex for them would have been especially intimate. probably a lot of quickies in the shower or late night love making after the kids have gone to bed.

i’ve read articles and stories, and frank mentioned this himself in dds2, that those who serve in the military often find it difficult to get back into the rhythm of life, and sex being on of those things. it’s not always the case, but frank said he was so tired he couldn’t take his wife to bed. and what did maria say in frank’s dream? “there’s plenty of time now that you’re home.” could it be that she was talking about that in addition to other things in their life?

so. i said all that to say, the sex scene we got was very telling. maria was on top. her hands were all over his chest and holding his head. and the look in his eyes when he was looking up at her?!? bye. and frank omg his hands were everywhere. her chest, her neck, her back, boy even buried his face in her chest. (micro asked if frank was an ass man but it would seem frank might be a boob guy ;) ) BUT JUST THINK ABOUT IT. the person on top is typically thought of as being the one in control. so that tells us something else, it’s not hard to figure out, but frank liked it. you can see from the look on his face he likes looking up at her. but kinks and preferences aside, the person on top is also seen as the one taking care of the person on the bottom. maria was on top of frank. she was controlling his pleasure, but also?? she was taking care of him. frank is the husband, and father, the man of the house, and yet maria knows that frank needs to be looked after too. he’s had rough tours overseas. he’s missed out on family events and birthdays and holidays and milestones in his children’s lives. frank has missed his wife. he felt guilt for not taking her to bed, but in this dream she’s taking care of him. and he likes it.

maria is a tough lady. she’s had to be a single parent in a sense, and here she is taking care of her husband. she knows what she’s about!! gettin a pleasurable ride from her sexy marine husband. she knows. she’s got it. and frank is lovin’ it. big ol hands were all over his wife. he’s whipped yall.

now think about the context of the sex scene dream. frank is tied to a chair and getting interrogated and getting the crap beaten out of him. he’s covered in blood, he’s been betrayed, he’s in hell. and what’s he dreaming about? his wife making love to him. he’s dreaming about the comfort of her touch. the feeling of her hands on his body. how her heartbeat sounds in his ear. maria gently cradling his head and playing with his hair.

as i said before, sex with them would have been incredibly intimate because they’re parents, and frank is gone a lot. there is not a lot of time for moments with just the two of them. so when they can make love, it’s going to be special, especially when frank comes home from a tour and they have to work back up to the intimacy they’ve been lacking because frank needs to adjust to life again.

micro asked frank if he missed sex. and frank didn’t exactly answer. (frank’s hand did kinda rest on his crotch for a second right after that question tho so…) but we know frank does. the comfort and intimacy of that bond with her gave them their children, brought them close as a couple, and even dreams about her brought frank comfort during an extremely difficult time in his life. he wasn’t thinking of anyone else but his maria.

1/ After Frank fully understands what he means to Karen (after her hug/+I want there to be an after for you), he is ride or die from then on. We were taken aback by how soft her was but I think he just needed to understand that Karen's love for him might've started as curiosity/compulsion to find the truth, but it evolved into serious care. I think at first he had doubts...

2/ Maybe he thought he was a project/something to prove for her. Obviously he always saw she was good person but now he knows she loves him for him. Once he understood that, he was ready to do everything in his power to use both hands to hold onto her. The softness unleashes because of his new faith in their relationship. It shows that once Frank is committed, he’s committed.

AGREED anon, you said it all. I mean the entirety of ep.10 is a prime example of “once Frank is committed he’s committed” hahahaha. At this point, I’m of the opinion there’s not much they wouldn’t do for each other. I think all of the feelings and emotions are there, it’s just defining their connection that’s difficult. I actually really love that, I love that this bond that they have is so unique it transcends labels and definitions. And everything was left so open-ended after that last episode ahhhhhhh I’m hopeful for what that might mean for these two going forward. :)
