OKAY, CAN WE TALK ABOUT THIS? 11x14 WAS JUST BRILLIANT.

“I was just a witness” Dean is sent back in time into a submarine that is fated to sink in order to retrieve the Hand of God, and prove himself useful to the fight against the Darkness. Dean’s purpose there was not to save the people in the submarine, or to help them defeat the Germans, it was to take the artifact and use its power against Amara. When he gets there, all he is able to do is warn the people about the German ship and their eventual demise, and sure, maybe he provides a sailor comfort in knowing that they do win eventually, but that’s about it. Everyone on the submarine dies, the Hand of God is kicked, and he finds out that Cas has said ‘Yes’ to Lucifer. Dean accomplishes nothing. Dean’s always wanted to be useful to the fight, and he feels like he’s failed himself, his brother, and his angel.

So then he asks Sam what happened to the German ship that sank the submarine, and Sam tells him that it went down. Of course, as history proves, the Allies win, and this submarine may just be a blip in history, but even small blips can make a difference in the grander scheme of things. Dean tries to process everything. His trip through time and into the submarine wasn’t a waste, it was to show him the light (coincidentally, with the help of the Hand of God)–he’s just a witness.

This is his fear. To witness his loved ones fight, and not be able to stand alongside them and help. To witness his loved ones die, and not be able to do a damn thing about it. He’s Dean Winchester, and he can’t allow the people he loves the most to just go out before he does. But ultimately, he knows that he has to allow these things to happen because it’s for the greater good. The submarine may have gone down, but the German ship gets destroyed, and eventually, they win the war.

Dean’s issue from the beginning was his inability to let go, and I think, his realization of being “just a witness”, may just be the kick he needs to start.
