LMAO CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THESE MEMES
Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is on fire. I’m not posting a pic bc it depresses me too much to look at it but here’s a source if you need one. Some things:
- The fire started because of renovation work. It’s an accident, as far as anybody knows.
- Because of the renovation work, a lot of the art (statues and things like that) in the cathedral had already been removed. Firefighters are working to save as much as possible
- The stonework will probably survive
- This isn’t the first time the cathedral has been damaged. It’s 900 years old, and France has had a pretty bloody history in that time.
- At this point the roof and spire are completely destroyed and the stained glass is lost
- it’s awful. It’s awful to look at. It’s a horrible loss to all of us. Being sad is normal and you don’t have to feel stupid if you feel sad.
- It’s been rebuilt before and it’ll be rebuilt again.
The inside of the cathedral might be completely destroyed. Centuries of irreplaceable art. Graves. Articles of religious importance. This is a devastating loss for history, art, and architecture.

not to be dramatic but 850 years of human history is burning down and it feels more and more like the end of the world

One thing my art history course has taught me, historical buildings throughout history have burned, crumbled, and been rebuilt.
