Samtember Day 04: Siblings | Uncle Sam

586 Words | Rated G | @samsseptember

((I chose siblings for this prompt!))

The boat rocked from side to side with the wind as Sam sat on it with his knees brought up to his chest, staring up at the dark sky. The clouds were rolling in quickly and soon it would rain. An apt metaphor for his grief right now.

“There you are.”

Sam heard Sarah’s voice and looked up to find her standing on the pier with a concerned look.

“Do you know how worried I’ve been?” She asked. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

“I just needed to be alone for a little while,” Sam shrugged.

“And you couldn’t ask me for some privacy? Instead, you came out here in a storm, and worried me half to death?”

“I’m sorry, Sarah,” Sam apologized but offered no other explanation.

Sarah sighed and got into the boat. She crouched next to Sam and took his hand in her own. “I know you’re hurting, Sam. You’ve lost the love of your life. But you can’t punish yourself by coming out here and hoping that the storm would take you away.”

Sam looked up at her and shook his head. “That’s not what I was-”

“I’m your sister, Sam. You don’t think I know what you’re doing?” Sarah asked, giving him a sympathetic look.

Sam hated that look. It made him feel like a wounded puppy. “He is supposed to be here, Sarah. I should have saved him!” His voice broke as he said and he could feel tears forming in his eyes again.

“Oh, Sam.” Sarah sat down on the boat and pulled him into a hug. “I’m so sorry, Sam. I’m so sorry. I know how much you loved him. I can’t even imagine what you’re going through right now, but you can’t let this grief consume you. Please talk to someone. Someone who can help you through this.”

“There you two are. I've been looking everywhere for you."

Sam looked up to find his brother-in-law, Kevin, standing on the pier.

“The storm’s rolling in. Come on, we gotta go,” Kevin urged them.

“Yeah, yeah, don’t lose your wits. We were just coming,” Sarah told her husband and let go of Sam to stand up.

Kevin gave her his hand, and she got onto the pier and fell right into his arms. The pair laughed and Sam’s heart ached. It made him miss Riley even more.

He got up and got onto the pier as well, and Kevin gave him a concerned look. “You okay?” He asked.

“Yeah, I’m good,” Sam replied, nodding.

Kevin wrapped an arm around Sam’s shoulders and pulled him close. “We got you, Sammy,” he said. “We got you.”

“Yeah, Sam, we’re always here for you,” Sarah assured him.

“Thanks, y’all, but I’m- I’m moving to D.C. in two weeks,” Sam told them.

Kevin looked over at Sarah and then the two of them looked at Sam. “You sure about that?” Kevin asked. “I mean, you need your family right now.”

“I need to be out there doing something,” Sam told them. “I can’t just stay here, hidden away. That’s not what Riley would want.”

“RILEY would want you to take care of yourself, Sam,” Sarah told him.

Sam sighed. “I will take care of myself.”

“Sam-”

Sam noticed when Kevin put a hand on Sarah’s wrist to stop her.

“You do what you think is best, bro-in-law,” Kevin told him and squeezed his shoulders. “Besides, I hear Captain America lives there. Maybe you can get me an autograph.”

“Yeah, like I’ll ever run into Captain America,” Sam scoffed.

Sam & Sarah Wilson, just being a realistic image of siblings.

These two are one of my favorite things from TFATWS. We knew so little about Sam during his time in the movies. To find out he has this entire family and life down south we know nothing about was such a special little gift. Him with the boys, him with Sarah -- it's all so adorable. But the relationship between him and Sarah is so great. You can tell they're very close, and their banter is fantastic. If she isn't in Captain America 4, I'll riot.

Sarah, pls!

Rated G • 500 words • @samsseptember Prompt 4 • Siblings

The only reason Sarah's involved is to keep her from talking. Because they're in Daddy Wilson's tools despite it being forbidden. On top of that, it's dangerous. Sam and Sarah are under Gideon's supervision, who's home from college for Sam's fourteenth birthday. He promised to help Sam build a hang glider.

The boy loves to fly but he’s too young for piloting and even if he weren't, who has money for flight lessons? Not the Wilsons. The kids saved their allowances, Sam mostly, to buy aluminum tubing, plastic drop cloth, Gorilla tape, wiring, bolts, T-connectors, rope, and a harness. At ten dollar per week, it's taken Sam two months to save. Gideon made up the difference when Sam fell short at the hardware store. Sarah's money paid for ice cream and a few bars of chocolate. She's otherwise unhelpful and mostly in the way. But the boys don't mind. Having an annoying little sister is better than having none at all.

Gideon outlined the wing using the aluminum tubes, which are already assembled and latched. The wingspan is twenty-five feet and once Sam’s done painting the tarp red and sketching fake feathers with black paint, he and Gideon will tape it to the tubing.

“I’ll look like the biggest red falcon in the world.”

“You’ll look like an idiot if the wind doesn’t get to at least ten miles per hour.”

“He looks like an idiot anyway,” Sarah says, laughing.

One of the reasons they needed Sarah involved and not out yapping to their parents is because there are no steep hills in Delacroix. So, Sam’s on the roof, clad in black jeans, sneakers, and a t-shirt. He’s even wearing safety goggles. It feels official. But it isn’t and since Sarah’s with them, she can’t tell anyone that Sam’s just run across the roof and jumped off with this makeshift hang glider harnessed to his back. At least he’s in a harness. Unfortunately, they did a bang-up job on the wing so Sam’s being pulled from the water just before their parents get back. Instead of helping the boys disassemble the glider, Sarah’s in the house pretending she’s been there all along.

“I’m not even gon’ ask why you’re half naked in my living room and dripping water on my just-cleaned hardwood floors,” Darlene Wilson says to a soaking wet Sam. Gideon’s quietly giggling a few feet behind him where he’s also wet and carrying a pile of drenched clothes.

“What did yalll do?” Paul Wilson asks.

“We didn’t do anything,” Gideon lies.

“Just playing in the lake, dad,” Sam adds.

“Well—” Sarah starts but is cut off by Sam yelling, “Sarah, please!”

She snitches. Not a detail left out. While confined to his room for the next week, Sam draws various wing designs for a new and improved hang glider, as well as a pair of fantasy wings he wants to fly when he’s older and trained. Someday, he’ll show everybody he was always meant for the sky.

First Flight

First Flight

| Gen Fic/Family Fic | Rated: G | WC: 646 | Family Feels, Gideon POV, First Flight |

Summary: Gideon lets his little brother climb a tree. He doesn't expect his brother to jump out of the tree too.

The tree was a Flowering Dogwood.

Gideon knew this because his siblings had asked him last week after church while waiting for their parents to finish their goodbyes to friends and the gossiping old ladies. Gideon had winked and said it was a secret, but then spent the rest of the week investigating what kind of tree this particular one was.

Pale-green, almost white from a distance, four-petaled flowers with green clusters in the middle. Finally toothed leaves which change color in the fall weather. Deeply grooved, reddish-brown bark.

It was a Flowering Dogwood.

At least.

That was what Ms. Stacy of the Youth Group said when Gideon broke down and asked her.

But nonetheless, Gideon's siblings gazed upon him in awe as he told them about this secret tree a week later.

"I'm going to climb the secret tree," whispered Sam as he turned his eyes back to the now orange-red leaved Flowering Dogwood.

Sam had gotten into the habit of climbing things. Not that Gideon completely kept track of the different phases his younger siblings went through, but this phase had stood out in particular for how long it had gone on.

Sam would climb the stairs on the wrong side of the railing, only to be thwarted by one of their parents a few feet up. They would now find Sam on the top of a bookshelf, sprawled out like a cat with the latest comic whenever they went to the library. Apparently, Sam started to sit on top of his desk at school during lessons too.

Gideon probably should tell Sam to stop. But he saw Sarah excitedly nodding in agreement and Gideon really couldn't say no to his little brother.

"Go for it," said Gideon as he watched Sam run over to the tree without his permission.

Sam climbed much more proficiently than Gideon ever could up the sixteen-foot tree, skittering almost halfway up before taking a break.

Sarah, for her part, seemed in awe of what Sam had just done. She gazed, agape at Sam six feet off the ground before she blurted, "You're so good at that!"

"Do you want to be a rock climber or something?" asked Gideon, wondering if he should see if there's a gym nearby for Sam.

"No," said Sam, and in a horrifying twist, turned to face outward to his siblings, "I want to be a bird!"

Gideon wasn't sure what he expected a six-year-old boy to say. And while Gideon sprinted over to try to catch Sam, or possibly just buffer the kid's fall, he couldn't help but notice how happy Sam was in the air.

The look of pure joy on Sam's face as he soared.

And Sam had been happy before, but he never looked this happy. This was what all the climbing was about. And Gideon had just given Sam his first opportunity to actually jump.

Gideon felt a little less happy about the situation when all fifty pounds of Sam fell on top of him, toppling them both to the ground.

Though.

Gideon got over it quickly once Sam started laughing maniacally. A little boy filled with giggles and adrenaline.

"Again. I need to do that again," said the adrenaline junkie in the making before Gideon wrapped his arms around Sam and kept Sam in his clutches.

"Nope. Let's figure out a safer way for you to fly," said Gideon, wondering just how he was going to do that before settling on, "You can jump out of the tree again next week."

And yeah, there were people watching the three of them now. The old ladies were gossiping as they always did. Gideon could hear their parents walking over and asking what happened. But all Gideon could focus on was the look of joy Sam had as Sam gazed at that Flowering Dogwood, probably thinking about that first flight.
