You want to know why canon supercorp endgame is important and not just a flippant wishlist of entitled, overzealous fans some people try to claim it is?
Because sitting next to my mom while she groans at a show’s plotline of a woman realizing her attraction to the same sex because of her feelings for another woman fucking hurts.
Because listening to her complain this storyline is unrealistic or ridiculous fucking sucks when that is quite literally how I, her own daughter, explained my journey to bisexuality when I came out to her.
Because watching her roll her eyes and scoff at the mere existence of a character who shares my sexuality fucking stings.
Because watching her get visibly annoyed and irritated by the “audacity” of the writers to change this character’s previously established identity fucking kills me reminding me that even though she loves and “supports” me this is how she really views my identity, as unnecessary, as invalid, as inconvenient.
Because having a show we love to watch and talk about together be ruined and tainted by this shitty reminder fucking aches.
Because representation and GOOD representation is vital to not just normalize our existence for someone to tolerate but to promote real and genuine acceptance from strangers and those we love. Because the more you see other people’s experiences reflected in your media, the harder it becomes to ignore them, hate them, or just tolerate them. The more universal these stories become, the harder it is for people to avoid them and remain comfortable in their ignorant perceptions of others. Empathy comes from understanding and we can’t understand those we don’t even see or those we can easily avoid and choose not to see. Representation fucking matters.
