Masterpost - Amanda Tapping, GABIT INSP 2022

I’m at the airport, waiting for my flight back home, and realize the high from the last three days hasn’t worn off yet.

I MET AMANDA TAPPING!!!

That alone is a dream coming true.

But most importantly, I met some wonderful people, some I already knew from here and new ones from all over the world. We had a fantastic weekend with amazing conversations and a hell of a lot of fun. And definitely not enough sleep.

During the Q&A sessions I took extensive notes, took some pictures and already received pictures from others. So, I will write down my experience and preserve it for all eternity. It will probably look like this:

  • part III - the auction here
  • part IV - Q&A sessions 3 & 4 from Sunday here and here
  • part V - closing ceremony and personal thoughts here

But I still need more time to reflect, and, unfortunately, I am too busy on the job the next few days.

I promise to start this project during the upcoming weekend.

And I hope the smile on my face will last for a few more days.

To the people in the OTW Tumblr Inbox asking about how the OTW is responding to the American Election.

This is a separate post (and not a response to a specific message) because we all need to see it.

First, we want to assure you that there are several factors that tend to protect AO3 and its users from legal risks and challenges. These include that we are a non-profit, do not host images, do not use algorithms to promote or advertise content to users, are not aimed at children, and collect very little user data. The results of the 2024 U.S. election are deeply concerning, but the OTW remains committed to providing an inclusive space for fannish expression and will continue to fight for fans' free expression, both in court and through legislative efforts, in the U.S. and worldwide. We have seen that fans are a powerful force for promoting free expression, and we will continue to inform people about opportunities for their voices to be heard. If a bill is likely to be passed in the future that could impact our ability to provide services, our legal team will be prepared to offer updates, guidance, and legal support to our users. Fans are not alone in this fight. Both the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) (https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/the-aclu-is-fighting-back-against-trump ) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/11/2024-us-election-over-eff-ready-whats-next ) made preparations for this outcome and have developed strategies to combat anticipated efforts to curtail online freedoms. We urge our users to support these organizations and others as they fight for your rights and ours.

Settings ➡️ Google ➡️ all services ➡️ Ads ➡️ Delete advertising ID

(may differ slightly depending on android version and manufacturer firmware. you can't just search settings for "advertising ID" of course 🔪)

iOS:

Settings ➡️ privacy ➡️ tracking ➡️ toggle "allow apps to request to track" to OFF

and ALSO settings ➡️ privacy ➡️ Apple advertising ➡️ toggle "personalized ads" to OFF

I've never been explicit about this because I'm a Fandom Old, and back in the day it was simply understood that anything on the Internet was fair game to do with what you wish, but: if you see a story of mine out there and you like it, download it. Fuck if I care. Keep it for yourself, distribute it to friends, print copies for yourself and your friends, mail it to people, I don't give a shit. As long as you're not exchanging money, I couldn't care less. And tbh you should be doing this with all fanfics you love - print them, save them, put them on a flash drive or a hard drive or share them with friends, whatever. Fanfic authors these days are really fucking precious about their fics, but honestly we're probably going to start seeing queer art being disappeared (especially in the US under the next president) so do whatever you can to archive the things you love to read. Even if that means just printing them out and sticking them in a binder for yourself to read as a bedtime story.

Rising from my migraine to add my name to the list. Please save my fanfics if you love them. Ask for any you can't find. And if you feel crafty, there are very easy and simple ways to bind them into books so they can sit on your shelf with the other books you read.
