It would be such a shame if someone reblogged this. Whoops my fingers slipped
ok.
hey let's all do this on March 15th. on the website.
Hey don’t just like. Reblog.
I like this idea
ok!
I miss the old, good internet, but I don’t want to bring it back.
I want a new, good internet. One where users can’t be locked in because we make it legal to:
• reverse-engineer products and services, so you can leave a social media platform but still send and receive messages from the people you leave behind;
• jailbreak your devices so you can remove antifeatures like surveillance, ink-locking or repair-blocking; • move your media and files out of the silo whence they originated and into any player you want.
I want a new, good internet where we constrain the conduct of tech companies, banning unfair labor practices, deceptive marketing, corporate hostage-taking and other forms of rent-extraction.
I want a new, good internet where it’s both illegal to impose bossware on your employees, and where those employees can legally hack the bossware their bosses shove down their throats.
I want a new, good internet where creative workers and their audiences can reliably connect with one another, where news reporting isn’t held hostage to extractive processes.
I want a new, good internet where we seize the means of computation so that the digital infrastructure that connects our romantic, personal, political, civic, economic, educational and family and social lives is operated by and for the people who use it.
goodnight everyone (:

i'm burnt out in a way that i haven't felt in a long time. it's a bitch of a time
Hey all, you know how internet searches suck now? When the results are awful, full-of-AI, death-of-the-internet levels of bad?
Start appending date constraints to your searches - "before:2023".
My results have gone from 90% AI bullshit to ~60% usable - which frankly at this point is a huge improvement.
Sorry for being a bitch earlier, I needed to lay in the dark with my headphones for 3 hours to feel better
Advice from one trans woman to hopefully others:
keep an eye on your own blood test results, educate yourself on the ideal feminizing range, if your numbers are not reaching a feminizing range ask for a dosage increase or a change to another method such as injections. It took me WAY TOO LONG to hit the numbers I wanted to be in because I wasn’t advocating for myself. And I have a good trans friendly doctor! I just wasn’t saying, for myself, “I want to go on injections” until I hit the dosage limit of patches and started to get depressed that nothing was happening! It was only around then I started looking at my own blood tests and realizing how far out of the range for feminization I was! And then I bit the bullet and learned how to do my own injections. And now I’m seeing changes again and I feel good about my transition for the first time in like a year.
This isn’t even malice on my doctor’s part I’m just dealing with someone helpful but not a specialist, and that’s going to be the experience for a lot of y’all too just on accessibility. Please go over your own medical tests.
Some bullet points from my experience:
Discussions of transmisogyny today, including this very term, are indebted to Julia Serano. It's incredible how much (and how little) has changed since Whipping Girl was published in 2007. If you're looking to read or re-read this book, a third edition with an afterward on today's anti-trans moral panic is coming out next month.
as someone who has been involved in union organizing through my dad's union since i was literally in second grade, the way that people on tumblr think unions work drives me literally insane
unions do so much more than just strike. unions bargain. unions sit in at meetings with upper management. unions help people navigate benefits. unions coordinate aid drives for disabled members. my union ran a donations campaign for me for the interim between the end of my allotted paid leave and my disability claim
"unionize your workplace" means so much more than "talk to your coworkers about striking." you gotta actively know what a union is and what a union isn't before you can form one. calls to unionize should lead to more people learning their rights and learning how unions work, and coordinating with orgs like seiu and the teamsters and the aft (and if you don't know what those are, look them up).
My union found me a legal expert to help me check over my last redundancy settlement for free, provided private medical cover whilst I was unemployed, and negotiated a good deal on cheap insurance for their members. It is so much more than strikes.
I can't stress enough how much I miss StumbleUpon
StumbleUpon once sent me to a supercut of Lion King, Lion King 1 1/2, and Lion King II, the main edit being that the scenes of Lion King and Lion King 1 1/2 were interspersed so that they happened in the order they actually happened.
stumbleupon not existing anymore can be directly traced to a dramatic decline in my mental health, I could do a thesis on it.
bestie stumbleupon very much still exists its just called cloudhiker now. i use it all the time.
mini compilation of suggestions from the replies:
The Bored Button - "Press the Bored Button and be bored no more."
Cloudhiker - "Discover the most interesting, weird and awesome websites of the Internet" (not really a rebrand, it's a different person running it but they have the same intention in mind)
Astronaut.io - "These videos come from YouTube. They were uploaded in the last week and have titles like DSC 1234 and IMG 4321. They have almost zero previous views. They are unnamed, unedited, and unseen (by anyone but you)."
Marginalia - "This is an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed."
If you ever feel weird about posting or taking nudes and all just remember how integral people's personal pornography has been to the preservation of queer history
