From the scene in KK3, caught in a cyclone storm, where Yuuki and Kyle wake up cold and shivering in the bush (after fleeing from Lee's house, and hiding in the park).
Kyle was supposed to be keeping watch, but fell asleep...and won't wake up very easily.
Left tied up in the stormwater drain
Left there long enough for the blood to dry and bruises to fade, and the wounds to reopen with abrasion and drying-out skin

Additional note re scene: The foster family went away for Christmas, and Kyle opted to stay behind (the better option). Also, this is the same year Kyle got the fireplace burn.
