On the road (scene from The Case of Kindall, K.)

After rescuing Kyle from an attempted kidnapping, and Yuuki from the helplessness of not being able to do anything to stop it.

While worrying about getting followed, they've got Yuuki's shattered and burnt arm to deal with. Given the injury, they're going to need to do field surgery to amputate it.

It's a fairly long drive before they can do anything, though.

Until then, the only reprieve Yuuki gets from the pain of the injury is passing in and out from it.

Joshua's POV

-----

The boot lid clicks, is opened. Light floods in.

Joshua stares blankly outside. A Peace Force Officer helps him out of the boot. He lets them. When his feet touch the ground, Joshua realises he’s shakier than he’d like to admit.

He looks around. They're pulled over on the shoulder of a highway. Joshua doesn't recognise it straight away.

But then he realises, if the nearby city buildings are anything to go by, that they're still in Ninao district. The sight of the road makes sense now.

They haven't travelled far. We weren't taken far.

A relief, but the two people who took them are nowhere to be seen.

Glancing at the front of the car, the engine still running but no one sitting in the drivers seat, it's not hard to tell that they fled.

...likely into the bush growing on this side of the road. From there, though...?

That's as far as Joshua's thoughts will go.

When his attention returns to in front of him, he sees his father being carefully helped out of the car. There’s rope around his wrists, tying them together behind his back. He looks dazed. His face is pale.

Timothy sees Joshua then, and the confusion and alarm on his face turns into something more like shock sinking in.

“What’s going on?” Timothy asks, uncertain.

They’re both walked over to the PF vehicles. The doors are wide open.

The PF officer who pulled Joshua out of the car keeps an eye on Timothy's expression. “Kidnapping, by the looks of it."

Timothy’s hands are cut free of the rope. Joshua’s given a blanket which he doesn’t know what to do with. The PFO grimaces then eases it from his grasp to wrap it around his shoulders.

"I’m presuming this is your son?”

Timothy looks at Joshua. “Yeah.”

“Well, your son here kicked out the taillight and flagged us. Highway patrol. We weren’t exactly expecting this sort of thing out on duty today, that’s for sure.”

Not that it should be something expected.

Timothy frowns at the red lines wrapped around his wrists. He pulls the cuffs of his sleeves up so that he can rub them a little.

“We’ve called an ambulance. They’re on their way. In the meantime, we’ll stay here with you. Can I have your names, please?”

“Timothy Harrison. And Joshua Harrison. But, uh...what about...”

Timothy trails off, casting a nervous glance out at the bush on this side of the road.

"My partner is calling for backup," the PFO says. "Once they arrive, we'll scour the area and see if we can find the people who took you."

Joshua’s starting to feel cold. He wraps the blanket around his shoulders a little more.

“Do you have any idea who took you, or where they might have been taking you to?”

Timothy shakes his head. He winces. “No idea.”

“They just – ” Joshua starts. He swallows. “We were just at the office. Dad’s office.”

“I’m a judge at Ninao District Court,” Timothy explains.

“There were four of them. I don’t know what they were doing. I went to the bathroom, then when I came back, I saw them being taken away.”

The PFO notes this. “When you say ‘them’…was there someone else in the office besides you?”

Timothy’s lips part. But instead he turns to Joshua, horror creeping into his eyes. He looks around. Runs a hand through his hair.

“They took him too,” Joshua says. “I don’t know where. They…”

The information really settles in then – and the scene replays in his mind with that additional knowledge. How had it not crossed his mind back at the carpark outside the office?

The car that left before them – that’s the one that had Yuuki in it.

"Yuuki," Joshua says. "Yuuki Takahashi. He was with us. But they took him."

And now we have no idea where he is.

Ninao incident WIP: the opening, pt. 2

How Timothy (and Joshua) escaped the attempted kidnapping. Continues on from this scene.

Content warnings: kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, claustrophobia (just in case), implied rescue.

Joshua's POV

Note: in NZ English, we say ‘the boot of the car’ instead of ‘the trunk of the car’.

----

Joshua is coming back from the bathroom when, down the hallway, he sees his Dad and Yuuki being carried off. Four figures surround them, dressed in black and dark green and with their identities disguised.

Both Yuuki and Timothy are slumped in the hold of their captors. They’re flanked on both sides with their arms locked in a firm grip and their feet trailing on the ground behind them.

Before Joshua can mentally make the call, his feet come to a halt. Fear rushes over him, adrenaline. He stands stock still, in the hallway where he is.

They haven’t seen him. They haven’t seen me. I should stay out of sight, right? Call the police, let the Peace Forces handle it. I’m not the PF, I can’t –

But something tells him that if he doesn’t do something, he might never see his father and Yuuki again.

Joshua hears the word ‘stupid’ playing in his own voice over and over in his head. He screams it at himself, but runs in the direction of his father’s receding figure anyways.

I hope I'm not too late for this (^^') but, for the "not so nice" ask thing, how about.. 38 for Kyle? =) Sorry, just kidding! How about, 2 for Susan, 9 for Sam, 14 for Joshua, 28 for Timothy, 43 for Amelia, and 44 for Kyle, and Yuuki? If you would like, that is. Thanks! ^^

Hi! You're not late at all! Thanks for the questions - these are some really good ones o.o !! (*has to think a bit for these ones* xD)

XD -- 38. Have they ever been imprisoned? (Kyle). Honestly? I have no idea! :O xD

Minor spoilers for The Case of Kindall, K. (KK1)?

2. What is the thing they feel the most guilty about? (Susan)

Yuuki's arm, perhaps. But because the surgery/healing process went so well, the guilt there would be minimal. (Compared to what it could've amounted to.)

So...that aside, I'd say the thing she feels most guilty about is her own exhaustion. Or rather, the tired thoughts that fester when she's spent. Susan spends a lot of energy being the healer/medic of the group. Even when the Ninao incident happened, she was the main person keeping the family together.

There's bound to be times where she's so spent that she makes snappy remarks in her head. Some of them might be quite sadistic. Even if Susan doesn't genuinely feel that way, the thoughts are there. They come. And she hates it when they do.

9. What is their greatest physical weakness? (Sam)

...hmm 🤔. Her size/height, I'd say. She's pretty sturdy, but her average height means she'd find it difficult to carry injured/fallen comrades on her own.

While this isn't necessarily a weakness, per say, it's a limitation. It's one that can make it harder to respond to some situations.

14. Are they prone to outbursts (of violence, extreme emotion...etc...)? (Joshua)

Not really. If someone were to /really/ cross the line, though... different story.

(*Note to self: this could be a fun idea to explore >:] *)

28. Is there a certain type of person that disgusts them? (Timothy)

A Person Who Doesn't Understand What Ethics Are -- and basically any obnoxious so and so who speaks unjustified ill of his family (including Yuuki and Kyle).

43. Do they wish that they could change their pasts? (Amelia)

This is something Amelia's been rather conflicted about. Is this the future she wanted for herself?

How would things change if she could change what happened to her family? What kind of a person would she have become if she'd grown up in different circumstances?

Without knowing if she could change things for the better, I'd say that Amelia would prefer to keep her past the way if is. She'd be too afraid of "fixing" something only to make something else turn out horribly wrong.

44. What's one thing they wish they could do more often, but can't? (Kyle)

Read, or nap. In a quiet space, one he's comfortable enough to rest in.

(Napping with Yuuki is one of his favourite things)

44. What's one thing they wish they could do more often, but can't? (Yuuki)

Run. Yuuki used to love running - he'd go out a lot. But he doesn't have the energy to anymore, because of how much his PTSD takes out of him. Also because of sleep deprivation.

*Looks at the bad guys* No, running from you doesn't count! <.<
