At the end of your story, everything may not be perfect or even the way the readers may want it to be, but everything will be okay. The ending is what your characters need, not necessarily what they want. You know how to write strong plots that are able to perfectly balance the right mixture of pain and lightheartedness. Writing tropes is one of your favorite things to do and yet somehow your take on it is always something so unique and original it’ll make your readers jaws drop.

FIRE WRITER

You burn. In the night, under the hot sun, you burn. You shine in the darkest nights, bringing to your readers an immortal fire. No one is able to portray feelings better than you. Emotions burn your characters, making them matches in dark rooms, lighting up everything, and burning from their own hands. Your best is shown in short stories, where the flames of your character’s souls can burn brighter than ever, and become ashes. Your stories hold the most passionate love, soft sighs whispered against a lover’s skin, and the neon lights of a night club. Pain is your second name, and you don’t mind it. Wars, betrayal, yearning, a/b/o and enemy to lovers are your favorite tropes. But when you decide to comfort, the fierce fire that burns in your soul becomes the warm hug of a blanket in a cold day. Established relationships, per-relationship fluff and medical fics are great at showing this softer side of you. “This is your daily, friendly reminder to use commas instead of periods during the dialogue of your story,” she said with a smile.

“Unless you are following the dialogue with an action and not a dialogue tag.” He took a deep breath and sat back down after making the clarifying statement. 

“However,” she added, shifting in her seat, “it’s appropriate to use a comma if there’s action in the middle of a sentence.”

“True.” She glanced at the others. “You can also end with a period if you include an action between two separate statements.”

Things I didn’t know

“And–” she waved a pen as though to underline her statement–“if you’re interrupting a sentence with an action, you need to type two hyphens to make an en-dash.”

You guys have no idea how many students in my advanced fiction workshop didn’t know any of this when writing their stories.

Okay, but someone please explain question marks when followed by a dialogue tag. How do?

“The speech tag is still part of the previous sentence,” she explained, ‘so it isn’t capitalised.“

“What do you mean?” he asked. “But there’s a full stop as part of the question mark!”

She nodded gravely. “I know!” she said. “A lot of people find this confusing. But the speech tag belongs to the line of dialogue, it’s still part of the sentence, so it’s wrong to capitalise it.”

She reblogged the post again, because she had recently read far too many potentially enjoyable stories marred by poor dialogue punctuation.

Last but not least, the most helpful tool for any writer out there is Google!

I think one reason writers struggle with writing is that many of us weren't taught how to write fiction. We learned how to write essays but few of us had teachers who sat us down and said "here is a step by step process for going from an idea to a plan to a draft to a final product. Here is a path and a structure you can follow, here are things to do when you get stuck."

Instead most of us just fell in love with finished stories, and were left to ourselves to discover what process might have created them.

it's so disheartening and i'm lucky because i feel like my work does get a fair amount of reblogs in terms of ratios and i am so so incredibly thankful, but it still hurts to know that my work isn't being passed around. and i'm not a fan of self-reblogging because i feel i'm cheating, so i usually just hope that someone else finds and reblogs it.

CONTINUE THAT SCENE!

I’ve always wanted to do this but never had the chance to, now how this works is that each of us add a couple sentences, a sort of what happens next and see what beautiful stories we create. Tag folks who might be interested to continue the chain so it doesn’t die out! 

Only rules are that if you’ve got smut or severe angst tag accordingly. Nothing that centers around certain kinks so that everyone can easily join in. I’m hoping this stays in third person because it’ll make sense once it’s all combined together but I can’t stop you (but please do try to keep in 3rd POV) Also no minors please! We’re keeping this Dean x Reader, no shipping! 

I’ll do different versions if this post blows up but we’re starting off with Dean Winchester !

He drops off Sam at the crime scene, giving a tight smile as the younger Winchester walks off to investigate. The neighbors didn’t really think FBI agents would be in plaid but with their suits dirty, it’s all they had. Would the plan go through, who knows. This particular case was strange, all starting off with a phone call at midnight to Dean, none other than Y/N speaking about needing an extra hand. Yet as they arrived on the scene, right at the spot she was supposed to meet them, Y/N didn’t show up. Coincidence? Who knows but what the woman described was dangerous and there’s a chance she tried to go after it, no Dean couldn’t think of the worst.

Her nerves got the best of her. Yes, she had called them asking for them to come help, but that was a last resort. And now that she knew they’d be showing up any minute now, she couldn’t face them again– not after what happened last time. She bailed out of town a couple of hours before she was supposed to meet them. They can handle it themselves, she told herself so as not to feel guilty.

Dean went over to the motel and booked a room for he and Sam until it was all finished. Before he walked out of the office, he had a thought. “Hey, by any chance was this girl here?” He pulled out his phone and showed the clerk a picture of her.

“Yeah, she checked out a few hours ago. Paid cash,” the clerk replied, shrugging before turning back to the comic book he was reading.

Dean nodded and stepped out the office to go bring their bags to the room before meeting Sam again. Why would she have called for help if she was just going to bail?

He called her, not expecting her to pick up. He was surprised when she did, the corners of his lips kinking up slightly as he heard her voice saying ‘Hello’. 

“Hey, kiddo! Wanna explain why you called in the cavalry and skipped town before they showed up?”

“Um…you guys got this. I didn’t want to…get in the way.”

“Get in the way?”

“Yeah. Like last time…”

He let out a deep sigh of frustration. “Y/N, you gotta let that go. It wasn’t your fault. No one blames you.”

“I do.” She said, quietly, and he felt her guilt over the line. Guilt he’d hoped she’d worked through. 

“Where are you, now?” He asked, hoping to convince her to return to the small town she’d raised the bat signal from.

“Well, it’s kind of a funny story…” She started.

He knew her well enough to be able to tell from her tone that it was going to be anything but.

Dean blanched, he’d never liked the guy and if her current whereabouts had anything to do with Dave, he certainly wasn’t looking forward to the rest of the story. “Yeah, ‘course I remember Dave.” Dean tried to sound indifferent but it wasn’t exactly working, “How could I forget Dave?”

He could hear her sighing on the other end. “Dean, if you’re gonna be like that, maybe I shouldn’t tell you.”

“What! No! Tell me what happened! Tell me where you are, Y/N/N!”

“Alright fine, but promise me you won’t freak out.”
