You busied yourself with the final preparations of the lavish dinner you were making, checking one more time on the roast broiling in the oven before pulling the cooled cake out of the fridge to frost it. After covering the cake in Sam’s favorite frosting, you took a breath, noticing your hands shaking. Tonight was a big night, and not just because it was Sam’s birthday. It was also your two-year anniversary. Two amazing, if not sometimes horror-filled, years of having the luck of being Sam Winchester’s girlfriend.

The two of you had been working on a hunt together, finishing off the vampire nest you were after just in time to still celebrate his thirty-fifth birthday. Dean and Cas had been off on a ‘wolf hunt on the other side of the country, so you convinced him to let you treat him to a few rounds at the hunter’s bar a couple miles from the motel you’d been staying at. The adrenaline rush of the hunt paired with copious amounts of alcohol had led to you deciding to give Sam what was meant to be a traditional birthday kiss. When you’d gone to pull away, Sam had pulled you back into his lap, kissing you deeper. The look in his eyes when he finally released you had you quickly paying the tab, Sam’s hand in yours the entire short drive back to the motel. He had admitted how long he had wanted to make the first move, how he was worried that your whole relationship would change if you hadn’t felt the same. That was the night you first made love to Sam Winchester, the first time you told him you loved him, at least, while he was awake, the first time he returned the sentiment.

You looked down at the cake in front of you, picked up the frosting bag and put the finishing touches on the decorating…yup, a big night.

Sam was sitting in the kitchen making himself a sandwich when Dean entered. “Hey,” the younger Winchester greeted his brother. “How was the werewolf?”

“Dead.” Dean seemed distracted. It took him a moment to notice his little brother’s raised eyebrows. “I mean, he wasn’t at first. Now he is, though.”

“Anything else on your mind?” Nothing ever went past Sam, did it? Dean figured he might as well ask him about what had been on his mind since he put his Baby back in her spot and noticed the familiar truck on the other side of the garage.

“Why’s Y/N’s car still here?” he asked while grabbing himself a beer from the fridge, pretending not to care too much about the answer to his own question. He tried to make the next one sound as nonchalant as possible. “I thought she had a date tonight with what’s his face?”

He can hear her before he feels it. Her rapid breathing, close by his ear, warm on his neck. It carries him out of his slumber and brings him back into the bed with her. She’s not there with him. She’s stuck somewhere far away and she’s scared.

His eyes open and he reaches for the light, flicking on the small bedside table lamp. A gloomy luminescence covers the room. Then the noises start. Short, fearful whimpers reach his ears. When he looks over, he sees her forehead is wrinkled with a deep frown.

As she stood in the reaching shadows of the towering spires and peaked eves of the mansion, a breeze too cold for August’s heat snatched the hem of her skirt and whipped it about her knees. Dark grain rested for centuries upon darker stone, both worn grey by nature’s unforgiving touch. And in the center of that ancient façade stood an entry consumed by foreboding shadows like the gaping maw of a slumbering beast.

Y/N tore the page from her notebook and tossed it aside, forgotten the instant it hit the floor. Slumped over the writing desk, she stared at a fresh page of lined paper, blank as her mind.

Well. Mostly blank. Blank but for that damned mansion. Get away, they had said. Take a vacation, go someplace quiet. You just need some inspiration.

The Winchester brothers and Y/N came back from a hunt barely alive and their souls in tatters. Too many innocents had been lost this time around; hell, they’d almost lost each other a time or two this hunt.

They trudged into the bunker, going for their respective rooms. Their bags were heavier, somehow, than when they left, making the walk down the concrete hallway slow and tiresome.

Dean was the last to leave the Impala, after checking that Sam and Y/N hadn’t left anything behind. He didn’t want to come back out to his beloved car smelling like old coffee and hamburger remains.

Y/N was sitting on the edge of her bed, staring blankly at the opposite wall. Dean didn’t usually ask questions, especially after a hint like that one, but something compelled him to ask this time.
