Legendary Holy Blade, by nolan192
the most disorienting thing thats ever happened to me was when a linguistics major stopped in the middle of our conversation, looked me in the eye, and said, "you have a very interesting vernacular. were you on tumblr in 2014?" and i had to just stand there and process that one for a good ten seconds
Exciting news I think more people should see

Studyspo update!
Post-grad, it’s not really study so much as work. Still a grind, still learning.
I do need to revisit my thesis and other papers to revise them for publishing. Oh how things have changed!
Here’s a long over-due update: I got an amazing job a few months ago. Since February, I’ve been an associate producer in an indie game studio. It’s incredibly interesting and challenging work, and I love it. Anyway, here’s my half of an executive office. I’m starting to decorate, and I think it’s coming along very nicely. 😊
#AcademicHalloween
I’m just trying to publish my paper about the idiolect of Gollum and Sméagol, but it turns out the one journal I thought was a good fit has been discontinued. So now I don’t know where to submit. Boo.......
How am I supposed to publish and not perish if I can’t find anywhere to publish?
200-page paper on language and thought just pulled this thing out. shouldve ended the paper there

spoken … written …. readen …. ?
‘Speak’ and ‘write’ are Germanic, ‘read’ is derived from Latin. We could have bastardized it more and gone with ‘readen’ all the same, though; shame that we didn’t :c
Read is so ridiculous when you think about it … how did it end up with zero derivation across the board? And having a present participle but no past participle? … it makes me cackle.
I didn’t realize it was from Latin, neat!
Ah, I misremembered my source! I remembered an association with the Latin 'legere’, but after I first responded, I thought to myself, “it’s possible to get an /r/ word from an /l/ word, but…” So I looked it up on Etymonline and it turns out 'read’ actually comes from the West Saxon 'rædan’ – also Germanic, and already more or less equipped with the conjugation we want.
You were absolutely correct in your initial post; by all rights, even when taking English’s multiple root-families different rules, 'read’ really should conjugate like 'speak’ and 'write’!
I have just decided that I will now be disappearing under mysterious circumstances.
yes i am an academic & hate academia
yes we exist
no one likes academia, people just want to study moss or teach the youth about the history of illuminated manuscripts but the only way to get paid for it is to deal with a bunch of red tape and administrative paperwork bullshit. why do you think every professor is a lunatic
