“Your scarecrow outfit’s starting to smear off,” Cody says with a grin. “Least I dressed up.” Drawing a breath, Rex looks at the holopicture his brother holds up as evidence. The nose is a bit smudged, but nothing else is too out of place. Glancing at his scarecrow mini-me, he’s pleased to see her makeup’s stayed on rather well.

Why the foundling isn’t frightened of him, Echo will never understand. His replaced limbs are hard as iron, and his gears grind giving him a grotesque appearance. He’s barely half-man these days. Simply a mess of tangled wiring and failed experiments.

an individual (especially an Echo) composed of cells of two genetically different types.

The fall breeze slips through the open window, rustles the curtain, and nips at his cheeks and nose. It wouldn’t be difficult for Echo to reach over and shut it from where he lays shivering in the hammock, but his hands are tucked tightly into his armpits seeking the little warmth found there.

On one hand, the chill reminds him he’s alive and breathing. His light hasn’t quite burned out despite how the galaxy has desperately tried to extinguish it. On the mechanical other, he might as well be frozen in containment on Skako Minor again.

“Don’t get moody with me.” Rex pauses by a clothing booth and looks down at the wares. Grabbing a smaller little cap, red in color and lined with white fur, he turns to the little clanker and places it on his head. “Just teasing you. You’ve always done well managing household affairs, B.”

The explorer droid looks up at the cap before pattering his little feet and snuggling closer. ‘Thank you.’

“You’re welcome.”
